Chapter 46 - Chapter 46: Beneath the Surface

Elena's POV

The path leading into the woods seemed to stretch endlessly, the trees towering above like ancient guardians. The moon was a pale sliver in the sky, casting faint light through the dense canopy. It was eerily quiet, the only sound the crunch of dead leaves beneath their feet and the occasional rustle of branches in the wind.

Elena walked ahead, her eyes scanning the darkness around her, acutely aware of the danger lurking in every shadow. She could feel the weight of the secrets she was about to uncover pressing down on her chest, threatening to suffocate her with their intensity.

Caleb and James flanked her, both vigilant, both knowing that this was no ordinary journey. This wasn't just about uncovering the truth anymore; it was about surviving it.

The obelisk wasn't far now. Elena had memorized the map, and her instincts told her that they were close. Her heart thudded in her chest, faster now, as if it knew what awaited them.

"We're getting close," James murmured, his voice low and tense.

Elena nodded but didn't reply. Her thoughts were consumed with the map, the book, the cryptic symbols that had seemed so unimportant at first but now felt like the key to everything.

Suddenly, Caleb stopped, his hand on her arm. "Wait."

She turned to him, startled. "What is it?"

His golden eyes were scanning the trees, every muscle in his body taut. "I smell something," he said, his voice low.

Elena froze, her senses heightening. There was a scent on the air, sharp and metallic, like blood. But it wasn't the scent of fresh blood—it was old, faded.

"Rogues," Caleb muttered.

"Where?" Elena asked, her breath quickening.

He shook his head. "I don't know. But they're close."

James cursed under his breath. "This can't be a coincidence."

"We can't turn back now," Elena said firmly, her voice steady despite the fear gnawing at her insides. "We need to get to the obelisk."

Caleb's eyes flicked to her, a mixture of concern and admiration in his gaze. "I don't like this, Elena. It's too dangerous."

She held his gaze. "We're doing this. For everyone."

James nodded in agreement, but the tension in his posture was palpable. "We'll stick together. If they show up, we fight."

They continued forward, the path growing steeper as they neared the clearing. The air was thick with anticipation, every step heavy with the knowledge that something was waiting for them at the end of this journey.

Finally, they reached the clearing. The obelisk stood in the center, its towering stone form illuminated by the dim moonlight. It was even more imposing in person, its surface covered in strange, ancient symbols that seemed to glow faintly.

"This is it," Elena whispered, her voice barely audible.

But before they could take another step, a voice broke the silence.

"Not so fast."

Caleb's POV

Caleb's instincts screamed at him to protect Elena. His eyes flicked to the trees around them, every muscle in his body ready to shift. He could feel the presence of the rogues—he didn't need to see them to know they were there. They were circling, waiting for the right moment to strike.

"Who's there?" he called, his voice sharp.

A figure emerged from the shadows, tall and imposing. The man was cloaked in dark leather, his face partially obscured by a hood, but Caleb could see the glint of sharp eyes staring at them.

"We've been expecting you," the man said, his voice cold and calculating.

"Victor sent you?" Elena demanded, stepping forward, her eyes narrowing.

The rogue laughed, a cruel sound that sent a chill down Caleb's spine. "Victor? No. I'm not here on his orders. I have my own reasons for being here."

Caleb's teeth clenched. "Who are you?"

The rogue tilted his head, a wicked smile curving his lips. "Name's Darian. I'm here to make sure you don't get any closer to that obelisk."

Elena took another step forward, her eyes blazing with determination. "You're not stopping us."

"Actually, I think I will," Darian said, his hands moving toward his belt.

Caleb was ready to shift, but before he could, the rogue threw something toward them—an object that hit the ground with a heavy thud. The ground beneath their feet suddenly trembled, and the air grew thick with an unnatural pressure.

Elena gasped, her body jerking back instinctively. "What did you do?"

Darian's smile grew wider. "Just a little precaution. You see, I can't let you interfere with what's about to happen. Not when it's already in motion."

Elena's POV

The world around Elena seemed to warp as the pressure in the air thickened, and the ground beneath her feet began to shake. Panic gripped her chest, but she refused to let it show. She had come too far to back down now.

"What's going on?" she asked, her voice steady despite the chaos surrounding her.

Darian's eyes gleamed with malicious intent. "What's about to happen is bigger than you can imagine. It's a new era, one where the power of Blackwood Hollow will finally be unleashed. And you, Elena, are the key."

Her heart raced. The obelisk. The book. The symbols. They were all tied to her. She had suspected it, but now the truth was crashing down on her like a wave.

"Darian, you don't have to do this," she said, her voice softer but full of conviction. "We can stop this. Together."

He laughed bitterly, shaking his head. "It's too late for that. You should have stayed out of this, Elena. Now, there's no turning back."

Suddenly, the ground beneath their feet cracked open, a deep rumbling sound echoing through the forest. Elena stumbled, but Caleb was quick to grab her arm, steadying her.

"We're getting out of here," Caleb said, his voice low but filled with urgency.

But before they could move, Darian stepped forward, his eyes glowing with dark energy. "You won't get away that easily."

With a swift motion, he raised his hand, and the earth responded to his command. The trees around them began to groan, their roots rising from the ground, twisting and reaching toward the sky like monstrous hands.

"Elena, now!" Caleb shouted, pulling her away from the chaos.

They ran, their feet pounding the ground, the sound of the trees crashing behind them. The clearing was rapidly becoming a battleground, and Elena knew they were running out of time.

As they neared the forest's edge, she turned back for one last glance at the obelisk. The symbols on its surface were glowing brighter now, as if calling to her, urging her to come back.

But she didn't. Not yet.
