Hello, I'm Kat Smith.
It's been 3 weeks since I kil-
I mean, it's been 3 weeks since my aunt died.
At first, it felt like the world was crumbling because of the despicable act I did, but after (partially) putting aside that memory, the weight stopped being unbearable. After all, Jacob was right when he gave me that advice.
Oh right! I guess I should talk a bit about Jacob.
I met him the day I decided to escape from my house and look for help to kill my aunt (I think it's better if we don't talk about that). The day we met, he told me the story about how he lost his dad and how he got to the place where we first saw each other, and after a little conversation, he decided to help me kill my aunt (I think we all know the outcome, so let's skip this part).
After she died, I thought I would have to live alone in that house, but Jacob ended up taking me with him. I've been traveling with him since then.
In only 3 weeks, we've been through a lot together: He taught me how to hunt my prey, how to use a knife properly, we escaped from a wild bear (we do not talk about this either), and I even got to meet his godparents! Jacob looked so cute compared to them. He's taller than me, but they were much taller than him, so he looked like a little gremlin to their side.
Anyways, I think I'm not talking about Jacob that much, so I think I should talk a bit about him.
Like I said before, he's taller than me but he's not that tall. He has a brown, messy hair that pairs with his brown eyes (I almost forgot to mention that when the sun hits them, they shine just like his weapons).
Damn it! I almost forgot to talk about his cool weapons!
Oh, I also forgot to mention that I swear now. I used to avoid doing it, but Jacob convinced me to do it since it doesn't hurt anyone.
Come on Kat! Stop getting distracted and finish what you were talking about!
(Please imagine that I'm coughing right now and just pay attention, 'cause I'll only explain this once).
So…! Jacob is really agile and strong despite his skinny appearance. Last week I saw him taking down two guys with just 2 of his knives, so you can imagine how strong he must be.
He did say that those 2 were just weaklings that didn't pose any kind of threat, so I guess that he's even stronger than I think…
Ok, just like I was saying, he's really strong, and his weapons complement his fighting style. Under his cape there are many knives hidden, but I've only seen him take out his combat knives, his hunting knives and 2 of the 4 throwable ones. He told me that both his cape and "the set of knives" (apparently that's the name that his dad gave them) belonged to his now deceased father.
Hmmm… what else can I talk about him? Oh, yeah! He goes everywhere with his cape on. Due to this, I've only seen his normal outfit a couple of times.
And, uuuhhhh… I think that's pretty much all that I can say about Jacob.
Aside from him, I don't think I have much to talk about.
I mean, I did befriend a lizard and I'm kinda keeping it a secret from my traveling partner. Her name is Lancelot! Yes, just what I said, Lancelot. At first I thought that it was a male lizard, but after making a subtle question to my companion, I found out that she was a female. (just to clarify, nothing about that question was subtle).
I've been wanting to introduce her to him, hoping that he'd give her a new and better name, but ever since he told me that he once ate crocodile meat, I fear for the life of Lancelot.
Hmmmm… I just related him with something else. Maybe I should stop talking about things that have something to do with him.
Like, for example, I just got a new backpack and new clothes. Jacob said that my clothes didn't look good enough to be with me, so he gave me an ultimatum saying that if I didn't get a new outfit, I wouldn't be allowed to travel with him.
I couldn't get any sleep when he told me that, so while he was asleep I kinda ran off on my own to do my first solo mission. The objective? Getting new clothes in a store that we passed by earlier that day.
I only had a kitchen knife on me, so my mission was a bit dangerous. I only broke inside the store (which thank god had a few spare clothes and a backpack that I could take with me).
That night, after I loaded everything into my new backpack, I got ambushed by a weird and big man. I tried to hide, but with his big hands, he almost caught me.
Just when he was a few centimeters away, mumbling about many gross things that he'd do to me, a shine appeared above his head and in the blink of an eye, his head got split in half.
The creepy man fell dead on the floor and behind him appeared a really handsome guy. I was frozen because of the fear I had for being caught, so I couldn't react to him when he talked to me.
He was tall, good looking and for some reason, seeing him covered in blood made me more attracted to him. The only problem that he had is that he seemed really old (He seemed even older than Jacob).
The only thing that this "hero in shining armor" did after killing the creep that was going after me was complain about how because of me, his pre-sleep smoke got ruined.
My body was still trembling because of the fear that I felt before, so all I did was nod and look down in embarrassment as he scolded me.
Still, even if my limbs were unable to move properly, my head allowed me to see something that caught my attention from the first moment: His axes.
For some reason, they shone the same way that Jacob's knives did, so I got all my attention on them. After a few minutes looking at them, my mind remembered something that I was told by my friend: "Everything that my dad made has a special and unique way of shining. You can't get it wrong. If it shines as my knife does, then it was definitely made by my dad."
My mouth trembled at that moment. Were those axes part of what Jacob has been searching for the past 3 months?
I looked helplessly as the man in front of me flipped me off, insulting me and walking out of the store. My body tried to get up, but I was still shivering because of what happened earlier.
As I saw him getting away further and further with each passing second, I tried to get up and go after him, but every time I attempted to move my legs, they just gave up and made me fall down.
I groaned in frustration knowing that the leads I could've gotten for Jacob just walked away in front of me…
Half an hour passed and I felt my limbs being able to move again, so while using a shelf as support, I got up and after taking the backpack with my new stuff, I started to go back where Jacob was sleeping.
Before getting back to where we set camp, I hid myself in a secluded spot and changed my clothes, tossing away the ones that I used since the day I escaped from my old house.
Once the new clothes were on my body, I took a deep breath and went back to my sleeping bag. I tried to fall asleep for many minutes, but every time I tried, the memory of that creepy man chasing me came back to my mind.
Without him knowing, I got up from my sleeping bag and hopped inside of the shopping cart where Jacob was sleeping. I hugged him tightly, hoping that he would not wake up, but once he felt my body weight on him, he talked to me.
I was expecting him to flick my forehead and kick me out of his "bed" like he always did, but this time, instead of saying something hurtful, he just hugged me while saying that I smelled nice and that I reminded him of Armando, his old shark plushie.
At first, I was confused because of his reaction, but after remembering the long night I had, I just curled up on top of him and fell asleep under his arms.
For anyone who didn't catch that last part, I'll say it again: Me, Kat Smith, was hugged by Jacob while sleeping. Yes, the same Jacob that flicked my forehead and made fun of me everyday.
Anyways, I think that's pretty much it. I have the feeling that with Jacob by my side, I will be able to survive each day. And yes, I do know that there's a timer on our time together, but instead of thinking about it, I'd rather live in the moment and enjoy my new life with my friend…
