Chapter 98 - Chapter 78: Labyrinth of Deceit

The air inside the cavern reeked of damp stone and an underlying metallic tang that sent shivers down Isabella's spine. The group's torches barely pierced the darkness, their flames flickering as if even light feared this place. Each step echoed eerily, amplifying the tension that crackled between them.

Malrik moved ahead, his shadowy blade drawn, its faint crimson aura casting a ghostly glow on the walls. "Stay close," he said, his voice low and sharp. "The labyrinth shifts—losing each other here isn't an option."

Isabella kept her hand on the Heartstone, feeling its rhythmic pulse steady her nerves. Caelum brought up the rear, his bow nocked and ready, his sharp eyes scanning every shadow.

They reached a fork in the path. The left passage exuded a chill that turned their breath into mist, while the right seemed to hum faintly with an almost magnetic pull.

"Which way?" Isabella asked, glancing at Malrik.

He hesitated, his eyes narrowing as he studied the paths. "The right feels... wrong," he muttered. "It's too inviting. We go left."

The group turned down the left passage, the temperature dropping with every step. The walls seemed to close in, jagged edges glistening with frost. Then came the whispers—soft at first, like wind through trees, but soon they grew insistent, forming half-heard words.

"Do you hear that?" Isabella whispered.

"Yes," Caelum replied, his voice tight. "It's trying to distract us."

The whispers shifted, now sounding eerily like familiar voices. Isabella froze as she heard her mother's voice, calling her name, pleading. Her heart clenched, and for a moment, she took a step toward the sound.

"Don't!" Malrik barked, spinning around. His eyes blazed as he grabbed her arm. "It's a trap. Focus on what's real!"

Isabella shook her head, the spell broken. She tightened her grip on the Heartstone, its warmth a reminder of her anchor. They pressed on, the whispers fading into sinister silence.

The passage opened into a vast chamber, its ceiling lost in darkness. A massive, intricate mosaic sprawled across the floor, depicting a battle between shadowy beasts and radiant warriors. At the center stood a pedestal, atop which rested an ancient artifact—a black orb that seemed to drink in the light.

"That must be it," Caelum said, his voice hushed. "The Nexus Stone."

Malrik stepped forward cautiously. "Stay back. These things are never unguarded."

As if on cue, the mosaic began to shift. The beasts depicted on the floor started to rise, their forms coalescing into towering creatures of shadow and flame. Their eyes burned with malevolent intent as they surrounded the group.

"Defensive formation!" Malrik ordered, his blade glowing brighter.

Caelum loosed an arrow, the projectile imbued with radiant energy. It struck one of the creatures, making it shriek and stagger, but it didn't fall. Isabella drew her dagger, the Heartstone glowing fiercely now.

The creatures attacked, their movements fast and chaotic. Malrik moved like a shadow himself, his blade cutting through their forms with precision. Caelum's arrows found their marks, but the beasts were relentless.

One lunged at Isabella, its claws swiping dangerously close. She ducked and countered with a slash of her dagger, the Heartstone's energy tearing through its shadowy form. The creature dissolved with an ear-piercing wail.

"We can't keep this up forever!" Caelum shouted, nocking another arrow.

Malrik glanced at the pedestal, his jaw tightening. "We don't have to."

He broke formation, sprinting toward the Nexus Stone. The creatures immediately turned their attention to him, converging with terrifying speed.

"Malrik, no!" Isabella cried.

He reached the pedestal and grasped the orb. The chamber shook violently as the artifact's energy surged, illuminating the space with blinding light. The creatures shrieked, their forms unraveling, but the power of the orb seemed to consume Malrik as well. He let out a guttural roar, his body engulfed in dark energy.

"Malrik!" Isabella and Caelum shouted in unison.

The light faded, and Malrik collapsed to his knees, the Nexus Stone still clutched in his hand. The chamber fell silent, the beasts gone—but the air was thick with an ominous charge.

Malrik looked up, his crimson eyes now glowing brighter, almost otherworldly. "We have the stone," he said, his voice strained. "But... something's changed."

Before anyone could respond, the ground beneath them cracked, and the chamber began to collapse. A fissure opened between Isabella and the others, separating them.

"Run!" Malrik shouted, his voice echoing as the floor gave way. Isabella's heart pounded as she turned and sprinted toward the narrowing exit, the sound of crumbling stone and Malrik's ominous final words chasing her:

"We've awakened something we can't control!"
