The air in the chasm was suffocating, heavy with the stench of decay and something darker, older. Isabella and Caelum stood at the edge, their eyes fixed on the glowing red orbs that emerged from the void. A low rumble reverberated through the ground, shaking loose rocks and filling the air with a faint, mournful howl.
"That's not just the Hollow," Caelum muttered, his voice barely audible over the growing din. "That's something else."
Isabella clenched the Heartstone tighter, its warmth barely enough to stave off the cold seeping from the abyss. "Whatever it is, it's waking up. We need to move."
"Move where?" Caelum snapped, gesturing to the jagged terrain around them. "We're trapped on all sides."
The voice from the chasm rose again, cold and mocking. "You've come so far, little one. But even now, you fail to see the truth. This fight is futile."
"Show yourself!" Isabella shouted, her voice trembling with defiance. "If you're so powerful, face us!"
The shadows twisted, coalescing into a form that towered over them. The figure was humanoid but monstrous, its limbs elongated and its face obscured by a writhing mass of darkness. The voice was no longer distant but right in their ears when it spoke.
"I am the Hollow," it said. "And I will break you."
The ground beneath them cracked, forcing Isabella and Caelum to leap to safety. Isabella barely avoided falling into the widening chasm, her fingers scraping against the rocky edge as she pulled herself up. The Heartstone flared weakly in her hand, its light flickering like a dying ember.
"We can't fight this!" Caelum shouted his bow at the ready. "Not like this!"
"We don't have a choice!" Isabella retorted, scrambling to her feet. She turned to the towering figure, her voice steady despite the fear courting her. "You don't scare me. Whatever you are, I'll find a way to stop you."
The creature laughed, a sound that sent chills down her spine. "Brave words. But bravery will not save you."
Before Isabella could respond, the creature raised an arm, and the shadows surged forward like a tidal wave. She braced herself, the Heartstone blazing brighter in her hand. The light met the darkness with a resounding crash, the impact throwing her and Caelum backward.
When the dust settled, Isabella found herself alone. The clearing was gone, replaced by a desolate wasteland shrouded in mist. She called out, her voice echoing into the void.
"Caelum! Where are you?"
No response. Her heart pounded as she scanned the area, her grip on the Heartstone tightening. The silence was oppressive, broken only by the faint whispers that seemed to come from everywhere at once.
Isabella…
She spun around dagger at the ready. The whispers grew louder, forming words that sent a chill through her veins.
You cannot trust him.
"Who's there?" she demanded, her voice trembling. "Show yourself!"
The mist parted, revealing a figure cloaked in shadow. It was smaller than the Hollow, almost human in shape. But its eyes burned with the same crimson light, and its voice was filled with malice.
"He will betray you," it said, stepping closer. "Just like the others. Just like they all do."
"You're lying," Isabella said, though doubt crept into her voice. "Caelum would never—"
"Wouldn't he?" the figure interrupted, its tone mocking. "Think of the secrets he's kept, the lies he's told. Do you know him?"
The Heartstone pulsed weakly, its light dimming as the figure's words took hold. Isabella shook her head, trying to dispel the growing doubt.
"You're trying to manipulate me," she said. "But it won't work."
The figure laughed, a sound that echoed in her mind. "Believe what you will. But when the time comes, you will see the truth. And it will destroy you."
The mist thickened, obscuring the figure as it vanished into the shadows. Isabella stood alone, her breath coming in ragged gasps. The Heartstone flickered in her hand, its light barely piercing the darkness.
"Caelum…" she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Where are you?"
A sound behind her made her spin around, dagger raised. But it wasn't the Hollow or the shadowy figure. It was Caelum, his bow in hand and his face pale.
"Isabella," he said, his voice strained. "We need to move. Now."
She hesitated, the figure's words echoing in her mind. You cannot trust him.
"Isabella?" Caelum stepped closer, concern etched across his face. "What's wrong?"
She forced herself to nod, pushing the doubt aside. "Nothing. Let's go."
As they turned to leave, the ground beneath them trembled once more. The mist parted, revealing a massive, ancient door embedded in the earth. Its surface was covered in runes that glowed faintly, pulsing in time with the Heartstone.
"What is that?" Caelum asked, his voice filled with awe and dread.
"The way forward," Isabella said, though her voice lacked conviction.
The door creaked open, revealing a darkness deeper than any they had seen before. From within came a sound—a low, guttural growl that sent shivers down their spines.
And then, a voice: "Enter, if you dare."
