Chapter 2 - new skills

.

---

Kenzai stood in the aftermath of his battle, his breath still ragged from the encounter with the forest wolf. His heart thudded loudly in his chest as he wiped his hands on his pants, trying to shake off the feeling of dread that clung to him. The wolf's body lay lifeless at his feet, its once-shiny fur matted with blood. It was hard to believe that he had done that—had actually killed something with his own hands.

The system's messages still flashed in his mind, the words of his victory echoing as if trying to remind him of what he had just accomplished. But it didn't feel like victory. It just felt like an overwhelming sense of survival.

He stumbled backward, his body still unfamiliar with the new strength flowing through him. The blue sky above seemed to stretch endlessly, and the forest around him was so quiet, so still. It felt like everything had gone silent after the roar of battle.

System Notification: You have unlocked the skill: 'Survival Instincts'.

Survival Instincts (Lv. 1): Heightens awareness in dangerous situations, improving reaction times and evasion.

Kenzai paused, taking in the new information. The word "Instincts" caught his attention. As if by reflex, his body tensed, a sudden shift in his awareness sharpening his senses. He could feel the breeze brushing past his skin, the rustling of leaves high up in the trees, and the faintest sounds of movement in the underbrush.

His pulse quickened, and for the first time since his reincarnation, he felt a spark of hope—perhaps this world wasn't going to consume him after all. If he could keep learning, keep growing, he might be able to survive and even thrive in this strange place.

Taking a deep breath, Kenzai turned away from the fallen wolf and looked around, trying to get his bearings. The forest was dense, the trees thick and tall, casting long shadows on the forest floor. There was no sign of any other creatures nearby, but he didn't trust his surroundings just yet. Not after the surprise attack.

The system flickered again, as if anticipating his next move.

System Notification: Quest Available:

'Survive the Wilderness'

Objective: Find a safe place to rest for the night.

Reward: 100 EXP, 10 Gold.

Kenzai frowned at the quest prompt. The thought of finding a safe place sounded easier than it probably was, but the reward was tempting. With the newfound strength coursing through his veins, he figured it wouldn't hurt to explore a little.

With a glance at the horizon, Kenzai set off deeper into the forest. The towering trees blocked most of the sunlight, creating a gloomy, almost suffocating atmosphere. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves. He felt a little nauseous but pushed on, hoping to find some kind of shelter before nightfall.

The further he ventured into the woods, the more unfamiliar things became. Strange plants with bright, unnatural colors dotted the ground, and the occasional chirping of insects echoed from the distance. Kenzai couldn't help but notice that the creatures here seemed... different. Their sounds were more primal, almost otherworldly. He felt like he was in a world that didn't play by the same rules as his old one.

After what felt like hours of walking, Kenzai stumbled upon a clearing. The trees parted just enough to reveal a large rock outcrop, its surface covered in moss and vines. It was a small ledge overlooking a tranquil, blue river that cut through the forest. For a brief moment, the sight of the river's glistening surface soothed his nerves.

But it didn't last. From the bushes, Kenzai heard a rustling noise. Instinctively, he crouched low to the ground, feeling his muscles tense as his survival instincts flared to life. His heart raced, and his eyes darted around the clearing, trying to find the source of the sound.

Then, out from the shadows, emerged another creature. This one was larger than the forest wolf, its eyes glowing with an eerie yellow light. Its body was covered in scales that shimmered like armor, and it had the body of a large lizard, with sharp claws and a long, whip-like tail that lashed the air.

System Alert: Battle Initiated.

Target: Lurking Serpent (Level 5)

Kenzai's body froze. This was bad. The last fight had been against a wolf, but this creature was much larger and much more dangerous. The level difference alone made his stomach churn. But he couldn't run. Not now.

The serpent's yellow eyes locked onto him, and in an instant, it lunged forward with terrifying speed. Kenzai barely had time to react. He tried to jump out of the way, but his legs were too slow.

System Notification: Skill Activated: Survival Instincts.

With a surge of adrenaline, Kenzai's body moved before his mind could fully process what was happening. He dodged to the side, narrowly avoiding the serpent's strike, but it was too close for comfort. The serpent's claws scraped across his side, tearing through his clothes and leaving a trail of burning pain. His HP bar dropped.

HP: 85/100

"Shit!" Kenzai gritted his teeth, stumbling back as the serpent prepared for another strike. This was it. His first real fight since reincarnating, and he was already struggling.

But then, a thought crossed his mind—he had just survived against a forest wolf, and now this creature was attacking him. He had to survive this. He had to fight back.

He wasn't just going to die here.

Kenzai's body surged with energy. His hands clenched into fists, and a new sense of focus washed over him. He wasn't going to let fear control him.

System Notification: New Skill Unlocked: 'Adrenaline Rush'.

Adrenaline Rush: Temporarily boosts agility and strength in critical situations.

His legs felt lighter, his senses sharper. The pain in his side faded slightly, replaced by an overwhelming urge to push forward. As the serpent lunged again, Kenzai rolled out of the way and then charged at the creature with everything he had.

He ducked under the serpent's massive tail and landed a punch directly into its midsection. The creature hissed, but Kenzai didn't stop. His fists collided with its scales again and again, each blow more powerful than the last. The serpent struggled, but it couldn't seem to land a hit.

Finally, with one final surge of energy, Kenzai delivered a devastating blow, hitting the serpent right in its weak spot. It let out a shriek of pain before collapsing to the ground, defeated.

System Notification: You have defeated the Lurking Serpent!

You have gained 150 EXP.

Your level has increased to Level 3.

Quest Complete: 'Survive the Wilderness'

Reward: 100 EXP, 10 Gold.

Kenzai stood there, panting, covered in sweat and dirt. His heart was still racing, but he couldn't help but grin. He had done it. He had actually done it. His first real battle, and he had won.

But as the adrenaline faded, a sense of exhaustion began to set in. Kenzai collapsed onto the ground, the weight of the battle sinking in. His body ached, his head spun, and his mind was overwhelmed with everything that had just happened.

He had survived. He had fought. But now, he needed rest. He could feel the exhaustion creeping into his bones.

For the first time since his reincarnation, Kenzai allowed himself to close his eyes and drift off into sleep.
