Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: In the Shadow of the Past

Joe was determined to keep Gus's daughter safe. Every morning, he trained her, and every night, he took every precaution to ensure she fell asleep safely. Gus's final wish reminded him of the most important duty in his life: to protect his daughter.

Joe quickly left the boxing gym and headed for the streets. Gus's daughter had no idea where she was, but Joe was determined to follow her. Although Gus's loss was painful in his mind, he now felt like he was living for a purpose. Gus's daughter had made a promise to him, and that promise was more important than anything else.

As he walked through the streets, multiple scenarios played out in his mind. He would try anything, take any risk, to find Gus's daughter. But explaining that to him was not easy. "Sometimes things get so complicated that you have to risk everything to protect someone," Joe replied calmly.

Gus's daughter was silent for a moment, then, wanting to say something, she asked, "Joe, are you scared?" This brought a moment of surprise to Joe's eyes. Because he hadn't felt fear for himself in a long time. But something had changed. Her safety, Gus's daughter's safety, had become more important than anything else.

"I am scared," Joe said, looking into her eyes. "But fear can be a motivator for doing what is right."

"I know you would give anything to protect me," Gus's daughter said, shaking her head. "But remember, you have a life too."

Joe took a deep breath. This journey could take him somewhere very different, but he was starting to embrace it more and more each day, knowing how heavy that responsibility was. He imagined himself back in the boxing ring. Maybe he could go back to his old life, his old fighter. But right now, his only purpose was to protect a human being.

A week later, Joe was out with Gus's daughter as usual when he noticed some suspicious figures. It seemed like someone was watching them. Joe suddenly started to take action and decided to take the girl to a safer place. However, no matter how careful he was, Gus's enemies had somehow found him.

As Joe was looking around carefully, several dark figures appeared around a corner. Suddenly, these figures started to move quickly. Joe quickly pulled the girl to his side and ensured that they were on a safe street. However, it didn't take long for these figures to follow him.

"Who are you? Why are you after us?" Joe shouted at the dark figures. A man looked up and smiled. "You're... Gus's old friend, aren't you? What happened to that idiot?"

Joe didn't know these people, but the hostility and threat in their eyes was obvious. "Gus is dead," Joe said coldly. "But I would never give his daughter to you."

The men smiled, but there was no humor in their smiles. "You don't need to worry. But the girl, she's very valuable," they said, stepping forward.

Joe quickly took action. He jumped on one of the figures and neutralized him. However, the other man was much faster. Joe's momentary carelessness allowed them to catch him. The man put a knife to Joe's throat in an attempt to neutralize him. Joe managed to escape at the last moment, but the tip of the knife hit his skin, leaving a deep wound.

He retreated to a shelter, protecting Gus's daughter. "Joe!" the girl cried out in fear. "Don't be hurt!"

Joe said, slowly cleaning his blood, "It's just a small wound, don't be afraid," but he believed that this journey would become more dangerous with every moment he felt the pain inside him.
