Joe was 17 years old, but life had matured him much earlier than his peers. For a boy growing up in the narrow, dark backstreets of Boston, survival took precedence over dreaming. His mother had died of an illness three years earlier, and his father worked hard construction jobs, struggling day and night to support Joe and his younger sister Emily.
