Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: Xiong Yufang's Disguise

After Xiong Yufang fled the hospital, she ran wildly through the city streets like a frightened hare. Her heartbeat is like thunder, every beat is like ringing the death knell, breathing rapidly as if pulling a bellows general, emitting a heavy sound. She didn't dare to turn around for fear that Xiao Xue's hate-filled gaze would follow her, and she was also afraid that the people in the hospital would catch up and grab her. Her mind was in chaos, like a pot of boiling porridge, all kinds of thoughts came and went, but could not make a clear head. She knew that she had committed an unforgivable crime, and her only thought was to escape from this place as soon as possible and find a safe place to hide.

She panicked and rushed into a remote alley. The alley was narrow and deep, and the walls on both sides towered over her as if they were going to swallow her up. The walls were covered in moss and mottled stains and reeked of decay, the smell burrowing into her nostrils and sending a wave of nausea through her. The floor was strewn with garbage and rocks, and she tripped and fell from time to time as she ran, flailing her hands wildly in an attempt to keep her balance, but still falling to the ground again and again. Her palms were scraped and bruised, her knees knocked and bruised, and sharp pain coursed through her body like an electric current, but she couldn't care less, gritting her teeth as she got up and continued to run forward.

Finally, she found an abandoned hut on the edge of the city. The hut was dilapidated, the roof tiles broken, the walls crumbling as if a gust of wind could blow them down. The window glass was shattered, leaving only a blackened hole, like the eyes of a demon, peering into the house. The surrounding weeds were overgrown, higher than her knees, swaying in the wind and making a rustling sound, as if hiding countless pairs of eyes watching her in the dark. Xiong Yufang couldn't care less, like a frightened mouse, she hastily drilled into the hut.

Once inside, a pungent smell of mold came, she could not help but cover her nose. Inside the house was dark and damp, filled with thick darkness, only a few wisps of weak light squeezed in through the cracks in the broken windows, forming a hazy beam in the dust. A thick layer of dust accumulated on the floor, and there was some debris mixed in with the dust; her footsteps stepped on it, raising a cloud of dust that fluttered in that faint light. Her body slid slowly against the wall and she sat down on the floor, panting heavily, her eyes filled with fear and despair.

However, it didn't take long for greed and fluke to work its way into her mind once again. She thought that perhaps Xiao Xue hadn't fully realized her plot, perhaps she still had a chance to continue to muddle through. If she gave up now, all her previous efforts would go down the drain, and she was not willing to lose everything that was about to come into her hands just like that. So she steeled herself and straightened her messy clothes and hair, trying to make herself look slightly more composed.

She looked around the shack and found a broken faucet with water dripping intermittently from the hose. She cupped a handful of water in her hand and washed her face, trying to clear her head. The cold water irritated her skin and made her shiver, but it also calmed her confused thoughts a little. She looked at her wretched reflection in the water, a hint of determination flashed in her eyes, and she secretly vowed in her heart that she would try to find a way to get out of the situation.

Xiong Yufang began to plan her next move, racking her brain on how to deal with Xiao Xue and the possible investigation. She decided to return to the hospital first and continue her disguise in front of Xiao Xue, after all, Xiao Xue is now in extreme grief, and may still be more easily confused by her appearance. She thought that as long as she acted sincerely enough, Xiao Xue might believe that the child's death had nothing to do with her.

She carefully stepped out of the hut, vigilantly observing the movements around her. After making sure that no one was around, she catted her back and quietly left this temporary hiding place like a thief. She walked along the path in the direction of the hospital, her footsteps light and cautious, observing her surroundings first with every step.

When she returned to the hospital, she saw that Xiao Xue was sitting paralyzed on the floor in front of the emergency room, her eyes were empty, her tears had long dried up, leaving a trail of tears on her face, her hair was disheveled and draped over her shoulders, her whole person was like a puppet that had lost its soul. Xiong Yufang took a deep breath and tried to make her expression look sad and concerned. She slowly walked to Xiao Xue's side, squatted down, gently held Xiao Xue's hand, and said with a trembling voice, ''My dear, I know you're in pain right now, but you have to believe that none of this is what we want to see. The children are so adorable, God will definitely bless them to rest in peace in heaven." She squeezed a few tears out of her eyes and slid them down her cheeks, trying to create an atmosphere of grief.

Xiao Xue slowly raised her head, her eyes looking at Xiong Yufang listlessly, as if she was looking at a stranger. Her lips trembled slightly, wanting to say something, but she didn't have the strength to speak. Seeing this, Xiong Yufang was secretly happy in her heart, she thought that Xiao Xue hadn't suspected her yet. She continued, ''I just went to ask the doctor, and the doctor said that the children went peacefully and didn't suffer too much pain. We have to be strong and pray for the children." As she spoke, she gently stroked Xiao Xue's back with her hand, making a comforting gesture.

At this time, Xiao Xue's husband hurriedly arrived at the hospital. His eyes were filled with anger and sadness, his face was blue, and his steps were hurried and heavy. He saw Xiong Yufang at Xiao Xue's side, the anger in his heart "miso" rose up. He rushed forward, pushed Xiong Yufang away and yelled: "You woman, stay away from my wife! It's all you, it's all you who harmed my child!" His voice echoed in the hospital's corridors, drawing sidelong glances from the people around him.

Xiong Yufang was pushed so hard that she fell to the ground, she looked at Xiao Xue's husband in horror and hurriedly explained, "Big brother, you've misunderstood, I love these two children too, how could I harm them? It was all an accident!" Her voice carried a sobbing tone as she tried to make Xiao Xue's husband believe her words.

Xiao Xue's husband didn't listen to her explanation at all, he stared angrily at Xiong Yufang with hatred in his eyes. He said, "You still dare to be sophomoric? I know all those things between you and my wife, you've been cheating her out of her money, and now you've even killed my child, you wicked woman, you'll get your retribution!" His hands were clenched into fists, his body trembling slightly from anger, as if he was going to rush up and punch Xiong Yufang in the next second.

Xiong Yufang was terrified in her heart when she saw Xiao Xue's husband so angry. She knew that the current situation was very unfavorable to her, but she still refused to give up struggling. She climbed up from the ground and continued, "Big brother, I know you're very angry right now, but you can't wrong a good person. Xiao Xue and I are genuinely good friends, and I never wanted to hurt her or the children." As she said that, she wiped the tears on her face with her hand, trying to make herself look more pitiful.

Xiao Xue sat on the sidelines, listening to her husband and Xiong Yufang's argument, and her eyes gradually gained a hint of focus. She began to recall the little moments she had spent with Xiong Yufang, and those suspicious things that she had once overlooked now came to her mind like a tidal wave. She recalled that Xiong Yufang always cried about her difficulties in front of her, and then borrowed money from her, but never saw her return the money; she recalled Xiong Yufang's unusual behavior before her child's accident; she recalled her intentionally interacting intimately with other women in the bar to stimulate herself. A strong anger and remorse welled up in her heart, and she realized that she might have been deceived by Xiong Yufang, and that the children's deaths were probably related to her.

Xiao Xue slowly stood up, her body shook a little as if a gust of wind could blow her over. Her eyes were filled with anger and determination as she walked over to her husband and held his hand, saying in a weak but powerful voice, "Husband, I think I know what's going on. She's been lying to us all along, and she must be behind the deaths of the children. We can't let her off the hook."

Xiong Yufang's face turned as white as paper when she heard Xiao Xue's words. She knew that her disguise had finally been recognized. Her heart was filled with fear and she turned around to try to escape. But Xiao Xue's husband had been prepared for this, and he grabbed Xiong Yufang's arm and held it tightly, not letting her move. He said, "You wicked woman, you don't want to run away today! We'll call the police now and let them deal with you."

Xiong Yufang struggled desperately as she tried to break free from Xiao Xue's husband, but she was nowhere near as strong as him. Her eyes were filled with despair, and she knew that once she was caught by the police, she would face severe punishment. She cried out, "Please, please let me go. I know I'm wrong, and I'll make it up to you." Her voice was full of pleading, but Xiao Xue and her husband were unmoved.

Just then, the hospital's security personnel heard the commotion and rushed over. Xiao Xue's husband briefly explained the situation to the security guards, who immediately assisted him in controlling Xiong Yufang. Afterwards, Xiao Xue's husband called the police, who soon arrived at the scene and took Xiong Yufang away.

When Xiong Yufang was taken away, her eyes were full of fear and remorse. She knew that everything was over for her. She had gone out of her way to hurt others in order to satisfy her own greed and desires, only to end up in such a situation. She kept blaming herself in her mind, if she hadn't been so greedy and hadn't embarked on this criminal path, perhaps nothing would have happened now.

Xiao Xue watched Xiong Yufang being taken away, her heart did not have a trace of pleasure. Her heart was filled with pain and remorse, she regretted that she did not see Xiong Yufang's true colors and was confused by her flowery words, which led to this tragedy. She knew that even if Xiong Yufang was duly punished, the children could never come back. Her world has since lost its color, leaving only endless darkness and pain.

In the following days, Xiao Xue fell into deep self-reproach and pain. She would come to the children's graves every day and sit quietly, remembering the little moments she had spent with them. Her eyes were hollow, and tears often flowed uncontrollably. She felt that she was a sinner, that it was her gullibility and stupidity that had killed the children. She could not forgive herself, nor could she face her husband and family. Her body gradually lost weight and her mental state became worse and worse, as if she had lost the courage to live.

And after Xiong Yufang was taken away by the police, her fate was completely changed. She will face the severe punishment of the law, and her greed and evil deeds will be duly judged. She reflected on what she had done in prison and her heart was filled with remorse. But it was too late, and her life was plunged into the abyss of doom because of her wrong choices.
