Chapter 144 - Chapter 144: Resilience Amidst Chaos

The city was shrouded in darkness as if dipped in ink. The sound of battle echoed from every corner, shaking the heavens and the earth. In the eye of the storm stood Shingin's city, where every street had become a battleground of chaos and carnage. Above, the Watchers loomed like oppressive thunderclouds, exuding an aura of relentless menace.

Watcher 24, the sinister Spider Queen, stood atop an abandoned building. Her slender fingers danced gracefully, commanding countless shadowy spiders that darted through the night. Silken webs cascaded like silver waterfalls, enveloping the surroundings in a massive trap. Under the pale moonlight, the web glimmered coldly, an icy snare brimming with suffocating peril. The Spider Queen's sardonic laughter cut through the tension like a blade. "Run, struggle! It's all futile!"

The web expanded rapidly, covering entire streets. Yame swung her sword, its gleam piercing the darkness and slicing through strands of webbing. Yet the threads seemed alive, coiling back with renewed tenacity, entangling her with relentless persistence.

"Damn, these things are annoying," Yame muttered with a grim expression. She realized that brute force alone wouldn't be enough to break free from the web's grasp.

Watcher 22 stood at the edge of the web, wreathed in a shroud of black mist. Surrounding him were a horde of imps and monsters. His gaunt face twisted into a ghastly grin as the imps, armed with six-barreled guns, unleashed a storm of bullets. The monsters, grotesque in shape, charged at Yame and Syoruha—some were beast-like with shaggy fur, others had claws as sharp as blades, each attack carrying deadly intent.

Syoruha's twin blades flashed, cutting down the charging beasts one after another. But the tide of creatures was unending, their carcasses piling up as more emerged from the shadows.

"The imps' firepower is overwhelming! Yame, we need a plan!" Syoruha shouted, his voice tinged with urgency. Despite their best efforts, the sheer number of enemies was too much.

Watcher 27 remained hidden above, orchestrating swarms of bats. The creatures screamed as they dove like black arrows, aiming for Yame and Syoruha's vital points. Their speed was blinding, forcing Yame into constant defensive maneuvers. A few bats breached her guard, leaving shallow cuts on her arms and face.

"I know!" Yame replied, her voice low and resolute, though the strain was evident.

Behind them, Watchers 28, 29, and 30 lurked, poised for the kill. Watcher 28, a sniper, fired bullets with chilling precision, each shot a direct threat to Yame's life. Watcher 29, a melee specialist, closed in swiftly, launching brutal strikes at every opportunity. Watcher 30 was the most insidious, his attacks laced with toxins that gradually slowed Yame and Syoruha's movements.

Syoruha crossed his blades, deflecting a shot from 28, only to be struck by a powerful punch from 29. He staggered back, coughing blood, and growled, "These guys aren't just numerous; they're elite!"

Farther back, Riyugi and Myouka stood side by side, their hands tightly clasped, their eyes filled with conflict and frustration. They yearned to contribute to the fight but knew their abilities were insufficient against such formidable foes.

Riyugi bit her lip, her voice trembling with guilt and pain. "We can't just stand here. Yame and Syoruha need help…"

Myouka tightened her grip on Riyugi's hand and shook her head firmly. "If we join them, we'll only be a burden!"

Riyugi's gaze drifted toward the ruins in the distance, her voice soft with worry. "What about Mom and Dad…? What if they got caught up in this? I—"

Before she could finish, Yame's voice rang out. "I know you're worried about your family. But as long as the Watchers are broadcasting this, they won't harm civilians. Once we deal with these Watchers, I'll personally help you find them. Trust me!"

Riyugi and Myouka exchanged a glance before nodding hesitantly. They couldn't shake their fears but chose to place their faith in Yame for now.

Yame exhaled deeply, her eyes scanning the battlefield swarming with enemies. Her dagger hung low, its cold gleam piercing the darkness. Beside her, Syoruha tightened his grip on his twin blades, his determined gaze ignited with defiance.

"Syoruha, are you ready?" Yame asked quietly.

Syoruha grinned despite the blood streaking his face. His voice was fearless and unyielding. "Life or death doesn't matter. But I'll make sure to take a few of them down with me."

Yame nodded and launched herself forward, her figure streaking like a shooting star toward the Spider Queen. Syoruha followed closely, charging into the swarm of howling beasts and relentless imps.

The battle raged on, the night sky darkening further. Amid the chaos, the struggle for survival and victory pushed ever closer to its climax.
