Chapter 7 - The Choice

The days following their meeting at the café had been strangely calm, as if the storm that had been brewing inside both of them had passed, leaving behind a quiet sense of understanding. Evan and Isabelle had, for the first time, let down their guards. The truth about their pasts was out in the open, and though it hadn't fixed everything, it had brought them closer.

But Evan knew that what they had shared wasn't a cure. It was the beginning of something deeper. And with that came the challenge of navigating what came next.

He found himself looking for her in every room he walked into. The steady rhythm of his life—the board meetings, the conference calls, the endless dealings—felt less important. Isabelle was on his mind more often than he'd like to admit, and it wasn't just because of the business merger. It was something else. Something that hadn't been there before.

But Isabelle was still playing her cards close to her chest. She was kind, yes, but distant in a way that left him wondering if he was just another person in her life that she was protecting herself from. He didn't blame her. She had every right to be cautious. After all, they both had scars that ran deep.

It was an unusually warm evening when Evan decided to take a different approach. He had made up his mind—he needed to be honest with her, just as she had been with him. No more games, no more half-truths. If they were to move forward, it would be on the same page.

He texted her, his fingers hovering over the phone for a moment before he hit send.

Can we meet tonight? I have something I want to say.

She replied almost immediately.

Of course. Where?

The usual place?

She didn't respond right away, but within minutes, a new message appeared.

I'll be there at 8.

By the time Evan arrived at the café, the sun had set, and the city lights were just beginning to twinkle in the distance. He was early, as usual, but this time, his nerves were on edge. He hadn't felt this uncertain in a long time.

When Isabelle arrived, she was wearing a dark jacket, the collar turned up against the night air. She looked beautiful, as always, but there was something different in her demeanor tonight. She seemed more... distant. Maybe it was just his nerves playing tricks on him, but Evan couldn't shake the feeling that she was holding something back.

"Evening," she greeted him, sliding into the chair opposite him with a small smile.

"Hey," Evan said, his voice a little rougher than usual. "Thanks for coming."

Isabelle nodded, her eyes steady on him. "Of course. What's going on, Evan?"

He took a deep breath, then looked her straight in the eye. "I've been thinking a lot about what you said. About moving on from the past. And I realized... I'm not sure where to go from here. With us, I mean."

Isabelle's brow furrowed slightly, her lips parting as if to speak but stopping herself. She leaned back in her chair, folding her arms across her chest, and Evan could tell she was bracing herself for something.

"I don't want to make this complicated," he continued, his gaze unwavering. "But I can't ignore what's been happening between us. It's more than just business. It's more than just... the merger. I want more from this. From you. I don't know if that's something you want too, but I can't keep pretending it's just professional."

The words hung in the air between them, heavy with meaning. Evan's heart raced as he waited for her response. He had laid everything out there, vulnerable and open, hoping for something that felt real.

Isabelle's eyes softened, but she remained silent for a long time. Evan could see her mind working, her thoughts spinning, weighing the options. And then, finally, she spoke.

"I... I don't know if I'm ready for this," she said quietly. "I don't know if I can trust that it won't end up like the rest of my life. I've built so many walls, Evan. I've spent so long running from everything that's happened. I can't just tear them down without knowing what's on the other side."

Evan's heart clenched at the words. She was scared. He understood that. But it didn't make the truth of it any easier to bear.

"I'm not asking you to tear them down all at once," he said softly. "I'm asking you to take a step. To trust that I won't hurt you. I can't promise everything will be perfect, but I can promise that I'll be here. I'll be here, whether it's for the business or... something more."

Isabelle looked down, her fingers nervously tapping the edge of her coffee cup. There was a deep silence between them as she wrestled with her thoughts. Evan waited, his breath held, not wanting to push her but also not wanting to lose the chance to explore what was building between them.

"I've been hurt before," Isabelle said, her voice barely above a whisper. "And I'm scared, Evan. I'm scared that if I let someone in again, it will just end in disappointment."

Evan leaned forward slightly, his voice firm but gentle. "I get it. I do. But if we don't take the chance, we'll never know. And I don't want to keep wondering what might have been."

The words seemed to hang in the air, suspended between them. For a moment, Isabelle was silent, her eyes locked on his. And then, with a quiet sigh, she finally spoke.

"Alright," she said, her voice barely audible. "I'll take the chance. But no promises. Not yet."

Evan's chest tightened with relief. He had no idea what the future held for them, but for the first time, he felt like they were both willing to take a step forward together.

"That's all I'm asking for," he replied, his voice steady.

As they sat together, the world outside seemed to fade away, and for the first time in a long time, Evan wasn't thinking about his empire, his wealth, or his power. He was thinking about Isabelle—and for the first time, that was enough.
