Chapter 1 - First sight

The school gate stood tall, its iron bars slightly ajar as students poured in. Finn stopped just outside, adjusting the straps of his backpack while scanning the unfamiliar surroundings. It was his first day at a new school, and the bustling crowd made him feel like a lone leaf caught in the current of a stream.

"Hey, you lost or something?" a voice called out behind him.

Finn turned, startled, to see a tall boy with messy hair and an easy grin approaching him.

"Uh, yeah," Finn admitted, his voice barely audible. "I'm new here."

"No kidding," the boy said, offering a hand. "I'm Adrian. You must be Finn, right? I heard about you in the staffroom."

"You did?" Finn asked, surprised as he shook Adrian's hand.

"Yeah, small school. News spreads fast," Adrian said with a chuckle. "Come on, I'll show you to Class B. That's where all the action is."

Finn hesitated for a moment, unsure if he was ready to dive into whatever "action" Adrian was referring to, but he nodded and followed. As they walked through the crowded halls, Adrian kept talking.

"So, you've heard about the Class A versus Class B rivalry, right?"

"Kind of," Finn replied, his curiosity piqued. "It's about grades?"

"Exactly," Adrian said, sidestepping a group of students chatting loudly by their lockers. "Class A thinks they're the elite, but Class B... well, we're just here to have fun. Don't get me wrong—we're not slackers. We just don't buy into the whole superiority complex."

"Sounds... interesting," Finn said, unsure how else to respond.

"You'll fit right in," Adrian said confidently. "Here we are."

They stopped outside a classroom, and Finn could hear the commotion inside. Laughter, shouting, and the occasional thud of something hitting a desk filled the air. Adrian pushed the door open, revealing a scene that could only be described as organized chaos.

"Yo, Class B!" Adrian announced loudly. "New guy alert!"

The room fell silent for a brief moment as all eyes turned to Finn. He felt his face grow hot under their scrutiny. Then, as if on cue, the chaos resumed.

"Adrian, stop scaring people!" a girl's voice called out from the back.

Finn turned toward the voice and froze. She was sitting by the window, her face illuminated by the soft glow of sunlight streaming through the glass. Her long hair cascaded over her shoulders, and her pen moved effortlessly across the pages of her notebook. She glanced up briefly, her eyes meeting his, and Finn felt his heart skip a beat.

"Monica," Adrian whispered, nudging Finn with a knowing grin. "Good luck, buddy."

Finn blinked, pulling himself out of his trance. "What?"

"Nothing," Adrian said, smirking. "Come on, grab a seat before Mrs. Carter shows up and flips out."

Finn followed Adrian to an empty desk near the middle of the room. As he sat down, he couldn't help but steal another glance at Monica. She was back to writing in her notebook, seemingly oblivious to the noise around her.

"Don't mind Adrian," a boy next to Finn said, leaning over to introduce himself. "I'm Jake. Welcome to the madhouse."

"Thanks," Finn said, managing a small smile.

"So, what's your story?" Jake asked, propping his chin on his hand. "Why'd you transfer here?"

Finn hesitated. "Family stuff. We moved, so I had to switch schools."

"Bummer," Jake said sympathetically. "Well, at least you landed in the fun class. Class A's a nightmare."

Before Finn could respond, the door slammed open, and a stern-looking woman walked in. The room fell silent as she placed her bag on the desk and scanned the class.

"Good morning, Class B," she said in a clipped tone.

"Good morning, Mrs. Carter," the class replied in unison, though a few voices were laced with sarcasm.

As the lesson began, Finn tried to focus, but his attention kept drifting to Monica. She seemed so absorbed in her own world, her pen never pausing as she wrote. What could she be writing? he wondered.

At lunch, Finn found himself sitting with Adrian and Jake in the courtyard. The sun was warm, and the chatter of students filled the air.

"So, what do you think of the place so far?" Adrian asked, biting into a sandwich.

"It's... lively," Finn said, earning a laugh from both Adrian and Jake.

"That's one way to put it," Jake said. "Wait till you meet the principal. He's got it out for us."

"Why?" Finn asked, genuinely curious.

"Because we don't play by his rules," Adrian said, leaning back on his hands. "Class A lives to impress him. We couldn't care less."

Finn nodded, though he wasn't entirely sure where he fit into this dynamic yet. As the conversation shifted to other topics, his mind wandered back to Monica.

"Hey," he said suddenly, interrupting Adrian's story about a prank they had pulled last semester. "Who's the girl by the window?"

Adrian and Jake exchanged a look, grinning.

"Monica," Jake said. "She's... complicated."

"How so?" Finn asked, his curiosity deepening.

"She's not like the rest of us," Adrian said. "Quiet, keeps to herself. Rumor has it she's got her eyes set on college already. Probably why she doesn't waste time on us troublemakers."

Finn frowned. "She seems... nice."

"Good luck getting her to notice you," Jake said with a laugh. "She's a tough nut to crack."

Finn didn't respond, but a quiet determination settled in his chest.

The rest of the day passed in a blur. When the final bell rang, Finn lingered in the classroom, pretending to organize his notes. He watched as Monica packed her things and left, her movements graceful and deliberate.

"You coming?" Adrian called from the door.

"Yeah," Finn said, quickly grabbing his bag.

As they walked out of the school, Finn couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation. He didn't know what the future held, but he knew one thing for sure—Monica had already changed everything.
