Chapter 17 - An Ambush

The next day, Emmy was woken up by his brother. Now that he had decided not to do his daily quest early in the morning anymore, he could wake up anytime he liked. By the time he woke up today, Sunny had already prepared food and gotten ready for school. He was just waiting for Emmy to get ready, eat, and leave for school.

After a joyous breakfast as usual, both of them grabbed their things and left for school. They didn't really have anything to carry, though. All their books and materials were kept in a storage device connected to their ability wristwatch. However, the same wasn't true for Emmy, who was using a fake wristwatch, so he had to carry his storage device separately.

"Do you think I can awaken an ability?"

Emmy asked, thinking about the awakened ability the system had mentioned.

"Absolutely not."

Sunny replied straight away.

"Tsk, useless."

Emmy clicked his tongue, walking away.

"Hey, brat, don't be silly. You already have a system, and you know what? The system will make you OP, even stronger than Grandfather and the big families. So, what do you still need an ability for?"

Sunny said, walking behind him.

Emmy thought about it for a while, then nodded.

"Hmm, well said."

Then he suddenly turned around.

"Wait, is Grandfather really that powerful? You always say he's on the same level as the leaders of the big families."

Sunny looked away and answered nonchalantly.

"You wouldn't want to know. That old man is a demigod."

Sunny said.

A few minutes later, they walked into the school building, and after getting to the Year Two building, they parted ways.

"Play well and don't let anyone bully you. I won't forgive them."

Sunny said, already walking away as he waved his hand.

Emmy smiled, nodded, and walked into the Year Two building.

Walking into the building with measured steps, Emmy prayed he wouldn't bump into Alice again. Well, that was a prayer he made every day—to not bump into her in the hallway.

He took the mechanical elevator on the ground floor and found himself in the hallway of the fifth floor in an instant. The elevator was no ordinary one; it was a mechanical elevator fixed with a mechanical teleporter, offering instant travel.

Emmy wasted no time walking forward. His class was at the last row of the fifth floor, so he still needed to walk quite a bit. But just as he took a couple dozen steps, several people emerged from the corner of the hallway. A few of them came out of the empty classrooms, forcing Emmy to stop in his tracks as they blocked his way with no friendly demeanor.

"Hey, bastard, do you know how long we've been waiting for you?"

One of the boys said, cracking his knuckles loudly.

Emmy looked at the group of boys carefully. There were 11 of them in total. Six of them were the group of newbies who had joined the school team with Eric yesterday. Fred was also among them, hiding behind everyone else with his rough hair.

The only person missing was Blake.

"I guess you're looking for me."

A voice came from behind him. Turning around, he saw Blake slowly stepping out of the elevator with sparks of blue radiance crackling around him.

'Damn, these bastards. I never thought something like this would happen.'

Emmy thought, biting his nails with a deep frown on his face.

"Do you have any idea how long we waited for you yesterday? Don't tell me you slept at school."

One of the boys said.

Emmy looked at Blake, then back at the group of eleven boys. He stood no chance against them. He couldn't even defeat one of them, let alone eleven—it was a death sentence. Not knowing what to do, he spoke.

"I'm sure you guys are here because of what happened yesterday. I'm really sorry, I apologize for my rudeness. I didn't know what had gotten into me yesterday. I'm not usually that rude. Please, Uncle Blake, can you let it slide just this once? I promise it won't happen again. Thank you."

Emmy said, sounding more polite than ever, his head slightly bowed. Then he started walking forward, but the boys immediately moved to block his way.

"Oh, sorry, it's this way."

He said, turning around and starting to walk towards Blake.

"Do you think I'm here to joke with you? Get him!"

Blake shouted, and the boys started walking towards Emmy.

Quickly turning around again, Emmy raised his hand and said,

"Wait, wait, guys! Let's talk this out. You don't need to be aggressive; we can really talk it out. I'll give you 500 dollars if you let me go this once."

Emmy said, taking a step back as the boys moved forward. Creating distance between himself and the boys, he was unknowingly closing the gap between himself and Blake.

Fred, behind the boys, couldn't help but shake his head in pity.

'This boy… he was confident yesterday, but now he's gotten himself into trouble. I'm sorry I can't do anything to help.'

"You want to give us money?"

Blake said, staring at Emmy, who instantly nodded.

"Well, I'll take everything you have with you when I'm done with you."

Blake said with a smile.

'There's no way out of this. Damn!'

"Do you guys even know who my brother is?"

Emmy said, trying to think of a way out, but the boys didn't stop.

"He won't let you off if you touch me. I'm telling you now!"

The boys continued walking towards him with measured steps, all staring at him like predators ready to tear apart helpless prey.

But before any of them could reach him, Blake suddenly shouted, making everyone turn around in an instant.

"Watch out!"

A large ice pillar shot toward them from behind. As they turned, they quickly made way for the pillar. It flew past Emmy, who fell to the ground, and headed straight for Blake. Blake dodged it with a simple step to the side, letting the pillar crash into the wall.

Everyone turned to see who had launched the ice attack, but the hallway was empty. Blake, however, could now see someone standing between them—right in front of Emmy.

It was a young lady with blue flowing hair and a delicate figure. Blake couldn't see her clearly as she wasn't facing him or the boys. She stood between them, a sword made of pure ice shards in her right hand, already drawn, with her back to Emmy.

"Ah, thank God you came."

Emmy said with a smile, already getting up.

"Idiot, shut up. Why would you mess with them?"

Alice said, not sparing him a glance.

"And who are you?"

Blake asked.

Alice turned to look at the boys with her shining blue eyes, then back at Blake, who seemed taken aback by her otherworldly beauty—as were the boys.

"Are you his girlfriend?"

Blake couldn't help but ask.

Alice spared Emmy a glance, then turned back to Blake and smiled.

"This idiot isn't worthy of being my boyfriend. But if you want to get to him, you'll have to go through me first."

Alice said with a charming smile.

"Ouch, that hurts. But these people are strong, you can't take them on. Try to create a chance for escape."

Emmy whispered into her ear.

Although Alice was a Level 5 ability user while Blake was Level 4, Emmy knew she could easily defeat him one-on-one. But with 11 other boys possessing Level 3 abilities and below—and Fred too—Emmy feared the worst.

After all, Alice wasn't as strong as Eric, who had defeated them all.

Blake glanced at Alice's wristwatch. Seeing she was a Level 5 user, he thought,

She can't be on the same level as Eric. If she is, I'll just run.

"Are you sure you can take on all of us?"

Blake asked.

Alice looked at them one by one, probably measuring their strength. Then she smiled and said,

"I'm not dumb enough to think that. But like I said, you'll have to get through me first to get to him."

"Well, it's a pity you're willing to die for him. I would have offered you protection. Get them!"

Blake shouted.

"But what if I join them?"

A voice suddenly came from within the group of boys.
