In the Pine district of Oak city in the Kingdom of Faeris, there lies a small house amidst the bustling city. Most of the city is made metal and tree. But not this house.
Next to and underneath the towering skyscrapers, this once-mansion, and former abode of mighty men has become the small home to two siblings.
Their parents dead for several years, all they had left was their ancestral home, their family legacy, and a small pet shop a block away.
As Veil Mortis awoke from his bed, he smashed his fist on the red button next to his dresser. The morning alarm softly faded into oblivion.
Stretching, he yawned. He then began to dress in his usual stretchy jeans and black hoodie. He went to the bathroom. After brushing his teeth, he checked himself.
The effect of his straight-falling, silver hair was clear aginst his indigo eyes. Smiling wryely, he went to wake his sister.
"Wake up, sweet one." He quietly spoke, gently nudging her shoulder.
"Nnnngh."
"Come on." He continued gently. "It's time to get out of bed."
His 7 year-old sister, Amelia, slowly got up. Her flower-laden pajamas gently touched the floor.
"I've got clothes for you on top of your dresser. Quickly change and meet me downstairs."
"Mm-kay."
Veil shut the door behind him and went downstairs. He had already showered the night before, and his sister was still relatively clean.
He started making her a batch of eggs. Slowly she came down fhe stairs and rubbed her eyes before sitting down at the table.
Calmly, he passed her an Omelette. "Eat up!" He said, smiling.
As she began to eat, he began to prepare the remaining two portions. Instead of making omelettes, he scrambled them and seasoned them differently. He added a few raw, thinly sliced mushrooms and left out the tomatoes.
He split it in half and put the portions in two separate, rewashable containers.
Putting one in a brown baggie alongside a small bag of ramen, he handed it to his sister while he kept the other to himself.
He waited for the bus to come take her away and waved as she left.
Stepping onto the pavement, he took his first step towards a new life.
Once his parents left, they were in considerable debt. He sold most of their stock, and became more of a feed specialist store. Focusing on nutrition and plant-type beasts, he managed to make some of it back.
Of course, to do so he had to stop going to school. After talking with his teachers, he managed to find an online solution.
He had finished his course. Today was the last day of school. For his sister, it was just a fun day. For him, it was his awakening ceremony.
In the Tree Kingdom of Faeris, throughout the nation on graduation day, each young man and woman would go through a 'test' of sorts. They would touch the Hrmm Stone.
As Veil walked up to his old school, he hoodied up. He was always a bit of a loner here. To run his shop, he had gotten to know people. That being said, he had no need here.
Placing his hand on the door, he smiled to himself and walked through. He signed in at the office, and continued towards the school stage. He asked for his assigned seating and sat down.
While he was waiting, he tapped his Augmented Reality glasses. He checked on his sister. She was at school, so no worries. Store looked normal. Door was locked. Inventory check was all good.
Veil sighed. He didn't enjoy wasting time like this. With nothing else to do, he watched the stage.
"Eldry Benjamin!" The Principal yelled. The young man put his hands on the clear orb.
It glowed orange. A symbol appeared above his head. "Defense Aura!" The principal announced.
"Dirks Benjamin!" After a short pause, the showboating principal continued. "Attack Aura! Twins, huh?"
Another orange light. Veil sighed. They were only in the B's, but they'd been through about a hundred students thus far.
Most students had gray lights, but that was in the main flow of things. Gray was common, Yellow was uncommon, Orange was rare, Red was epic, Purple was Legendary, and Mythical was white with rainbows .
So far, the twins were the only ones with rare talents, and only four students had received an uncommon talent.
Life was unfair for most.
