Chapter 7 - Golden Bird Cage

The message from Charlotte's father lingered on her phone screen, its contents so simple and yet so foreboding: "We need to talk. Now."

Her fingers hovered over the device, hesitation gripping her. She had tried to escape him. To distance herself from the man who had spent years manipulating her life, controlling her every move. But now, it seemed that her past had finally caught up with her—just as Adrian had said it would.

Adrian noticed the tension in her body as she stared at the message. His brow furrowed, concern etching into his usually composed features. "Is everything alright?" he asked, his voice low but filled with a quiet urgency.

Charlotte didn't respond immediately. Her heart raced as she felt the weight of her father's presence even through the phone screen. She knew what this meant. She knew that when her father demanded a meeting, it wasn't for a casual conversation. It was for control, for manipulation. It was his way of pulling her back into his world.

"I need to go," she said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. She stood up, her hands trembling slightly as she gripped her phone tightly, as though it might slip from her grasp.

Adrian's eyes never left her. "Where?" he asked, his tone sharp but careful. "I'll come with you."

Charlotte shook her head quickly. "No. You don't understand. This isn't something you can help with."

"Then explain it to me," Adrian said, standing up as well. "I don't want to let you go into this alone."

"I…" Charlotte hesitated, looking into his eyes. There was a depth of sincerity in his gaze that she couldn't ignore, but at the same time, she knew that if Adrian got involved, it would only escalate things. Her father didn't play by normal rules. He played dirty.

"I can't explain it now," she said, her voice almost breaking. "But trust me, Adrian. I have to do this on my own."

For a moment, the air between them was thick with unsaid words, the tension palpable. Adrian stared at her, his jaw clenched. He didn't want to let her go—especially not into whatever world she was so desperately trying to escape. But he could see the determination in her eyes, the weight of her decision.

"Alright," Adrian finally said, his voice softer now. "But promise me you'll be careful. Promise me you'll come to me if anything happens."

Charlotte's heart softened at his words. She nodded, forcing a smile. "I will. I promise."

The drive to her father's estate was a silent one. Charlotte's thoughts were a whirlwind, each one darker than the last. Her father, Richard Meyers, was a man who thrived on control. He had built an empire through ruthless business deals, using people as pawns in his game of power. Charlotte had been one of those pawns. As much as she hated to admit it, she had played her part in his schemes, convinced that one day, she could break free. But the reality was never as simple as it seemed.

When the car pulled up to the large, gated mansion, Charlotte's pulse quickened. The imposing structure loomed in front of her, a constant reminder of the life she had tried to escape. She could almost hear her father's voice in her head, commanding her to obey, to fall in line with his plans. She had run before, but each time she came back, it was because of the ties he held over her.

She took a deep breath and stepped out of the car, her heels clicking sharply against the stone path. As she approached the front door, it swung open, revealing a man in a suit who looked at her with cold, calculating eyes.

"Miss Meyers," he said with a slight nod, stepping aside to let her in. "Your father is expecting you."

Charlotte didn't respond. She simply walked past him, her eyes scanning the grand hallway as she moved forward. The walls were lined with expensive paintings, family portraits, and symbols of wealth and power. Everything in this house screamed dominance.

She reached her father's office at the end of the hall, and the door swung open before she could knock. Inside, Richard Meyers sat behind his massive mahogany desk, his expression as hard as the wood of his chair. He looked up when she entered, his eyes sharp and calculating.

"Charlotte," he said coolly, not bothering to stand. "You're late."

"I wasn't aware I had an appointment," Charlotte replied, her voice steady despite the knot tightening in her stomach.

Richard's lips curled into a thin smile, though it didn't reach his eyes. "You should have known that I'd call you when it was time for you to return home. You've been running from your responsibilities long enough."

Charlotte stood still, trying to remain calm. "I'm not running from anything. I've been building my life on my own terms. I don't owe you anything."

Her father's eyes narrowed. "You owe me everything, Charlotte. Don't forget that. Everything you are, everything you have, came from me."

"That's where you're wrong," Charlotte said, her voice firming with resolve. "I'm not a part of your world anymore. I'm done being your puppet."

Richard stood up slowly, his tall frame towering over her. "You're never going to be free of me, Charlotte. I control everything you've worked for. Don't think for a second that you can escape that."

Charlotte's breath caught in her throat. She had known it would come to this. She had always known that her father wouldn't let her go easily. But hearing him say it so bluntly made it all the more real. Her freedom, her independence—it was all an illusion.

"I don't need you anymore," Charlotte said, her voice low but filled with defiance. "I can make my own way, without your help."

Her father's face twisted in anger. "You think you're in control, but you're not. I've had eyes on you, Charlotte. I know everything. And I know exactly how to ruin everything you've worked for."

Charlotte's heart dropped. "What are you talking about?"

Richard smirked. "You think you can be with Adrian Kingsley without consequences? You think you can hide behind his wealth and power? You're nothing more than a pawn in a game you don't understand."

Charlotte's stomach churned. "You're lying. You're trying to manipulate me again."

"I don't lie," Richard said, his voice cold. "And I've already set the wheels in motion. The question is—what will you do when everything you care about comes crashing down?"

Charlotte's mind raced. Adrian. Her job. Her future. All of it was in jeopardy.

"Is that what this is about?" Charlotte asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "You want control of me, just like you always have."

Richard smiled again, his eyes gleaming with cold satisfaction. "Of course. But it's not just about control, Charlotte. It's about power. And you're going to learn that you'll never be free of me. No matter how hard you try."

Charlotte's hands balled into fists, her anger and frustration bubbling to the surface. She had spent so long trying to break free from his grip, but it seemed that no matter what she did, her father's hold on her life was unbreakable.

"I won't let you win," she said, her voice fierce with determination. "I'll fight you every step of the way."

Her father chuckled, the sound dark and menacing. "You're already too deep, Charlotte. There's no way out."
