Chereads / The Shardborn / Chapter 8 - Chapter 8

Chapter 8 - Chapter 8

The winds of the Shattered Isles were unpredictable, a force of nature as volatile as the sea itself. As Kael, Tess, and their new allies made their way through the narrow passageways of the floating city, the air crackled with tension. The weight of the Watchers' warnings hung over Kael like a storm cloud. He had never felt so torn between purpose and fear. The path he had chosen would change everything, and yet, there was no turning back now. He had to find Lyra. He had to learn the truth behind the True Shards.

The group's departure from the Watcher's hidden sanctuary had been swift, with no time to waste. The Watchers had granted them no further answers, only cryptic warnings that seemed to echo through Kael's mind as they made their way to the nearest port. The capital was still weeks away, but the first step of the journey was clear: they needed to leave the Shattered Isles and head inland, toward the verdant forests of the Verdant Reach, and beyond to the heart of the continent, where the Shard Council's headquarters stood.

Their destination was a city called Telmaris, a place where merchants, scholars, and powerful guilds all converged. It was the first stop on the road to the capital and a place where Kael believed they could find answers, resources, and perhaps a way to infiltrate the heart of the Shard Council. The journey would be perilous, though, and every step forward was fraught with danger.

As they neared the docks, Aro, the druid from the Verdant Reach, approached Kael. His presence had been a quiet comfort since they'd formed their uneasy alliance. Aro's connection to the earth and nature was undeniable, and his calm demeanor often provided a counterbalance to Kael's impulsiveness.

"You've been quiet, Kael," Aro said, his voice low but steady. "I can feel the weight of your thoughts. You're carrying more than just your own burdens now."

Kael glanced at him, meeting the druid's steady gaze. "I'm carrying all of them," he muttered. "My sister. The shards. The Watchers. The Council. I don't know what to believe anymore."

Aro nodded, his eyes narrowing in thought. "The path of the Shardborn is never easy. You are torn between worlds—between the light of knowledge and the darkness of power. But remember, Kael, power without understanding is a curse, not a gift. And I fear that what you seek may come at a cost that none of us are ready to pay."

Kael's mind flashed back to the pulsing shard in his hand, its power tempting him like a forbidden fruit. He didn't want to admit it, but Aro was right. There were moments when he felt the call of the shard—the promise of power that could change everything. It was as if the shard could sense his desires and whispered to him in his dreams. But there was no denying that every choice he made was taking him deeper into dangerous territory.

"I don't have a choice," Kael said, his voice raw. "If the True Shards hold the key to saving Lyra, then I'll face whatever it takes. I have to. I don't care what it costs."

Aro didn't answer immediately, but his gaze lingered on Kael, full of unspoken concern. "Just remember, Kael, the world is not a game. It is not about winning or losing. It is about balance. And right now, there is an imbalance in your heart. Don't let your quest blind you to the bigger picture. The shards are not simply tools—they are the forces that govern all life. They can't be controlled without consequence."

Before Kael could respond, Tess appeared at his side, her sharp eyes scanning the horizon. "We're almost there," she said.

"Get your head in the game, Kael. We don't know who's watching us, and we can't afford to make any mistakes. If we're going to get to Telmaris and from there to the capital, we need to move fast."

Kael nodded, though his thoughts were still heavy. "You're right," he muttered, tucking the shard into his pack. "Let's keep moving."

As the group boarded the ship that would carry them to Telmaris, the feeling of urgency gnawed at Kael's gut. It wasn't just the Shard Council that worried him anymore; it was the shadow of the True Shards. What if they were wrong about the Watchers? What if the power of the shards could be used to bring about the change the world needed? The more Kael learned, the more questions piled up—each more difficult than the last.

The boat set sail as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of gold and orange. Kael stood at the bow of the ship, his gaze fixed on the horizon, trying to focus on the journey ahead instead of the chaos of his thoughts. He had always been driven by a sense of duty—to protect those he loved, to uncover the truth about the shards. But now, that duty felt heavier than ever before. He could feel the weight of the world pressing down on him, the burden of knowledge and power growing more oppressive with each passing hour.

Tess joined him at the bow, her usual smirk replaced with a rare, contemplative expression. "You're thinking too much, Kael," she said, her voice unusually soft. "Sometimes, you just have to take things one step at a time."

Kael turned to her, seeing something unfamiliar in her eyes. For all her bravado and sharp edges, Tess was more than just a rogue with a dagger—she was someone who had lived through the worst the world could throw at her. And despite all of it, she kept going.

"You're right," he said with a sigh. "But sometimes it feels like every step I take leads me deeper into the unknown."

Tess gave him a small, knowing smile. "That's the nature of the world, isn't it? All we can do is keep moving forward."

Kael looked out over the water again, the dark expanse stretching endlessly in front of him. The night was closing in, and with it came a heavy sense of inevitability. No matter what lay ahead, he knew that his journey would only become more complicated—and more dangerous—from here on out.

The capital was still a long way off, but the road to Telmaris was the first true step toward uncovering the truth about the True Shards. But Kael couldn't shake the feeling that something else was waiting for him—something much bigger than the Council, the Watchers, or even the shards themselves.

Whatever lay ahead, Kael knew one thing for certain: the world as he knew it was about to change forever.
