Chapter 37 - XXXVI: New start.

At Eraser Head's question, Lady Nagant responded without hesitation. "We're putting them under the Okapi Protocol—along with the Hawk Protocol, they will be under Public hero safety commission care, so from now on, they will be under my direct protection."

Raiden, one of the key individuals involved, tilted his head in confusion. His expression made it clear he had no idea what she meant. "What are these protocols?"

Lady Nagant gave a nod before explaining. "The Hawk Protocol means that a high profile Pro Hero will be assigned to shadow you at all times, for as long as necessary. Given that we're dealing with a Type IV villain organization—potentially even Type V—we won't take any chances. You'll have two combat-focused heroes assigned to your protection. I'll be one of them, and Hawks, my protégé, will be the other." She shot a serious look at both Raiden and Tamaki, her tone leaving no room for argument.

"And the Okapi Protocol is simple," she continued. "No one will know your location—not your family, not U.A., not the government, not even hero agencies. Only you and your assigned hero will have that information. It's a protocol designed for high-profile figures and key witnesses, but given the circumstances, you two will be placed under it."

Raiden and Tamaki exchanged uneasy glances, silently sharing the same concern. Surprisingly, it was Tamaki who spoke first. "What about our hero training and classes?" From the looks on Eraser Head and Snipe's faces, they shared the same worry.

"You'll continue attending U.A.," Lady Nagant assured them. "However, it won't always be in person. Your schedule will be a mix of online and offline lessons, depending on the situation. If you miss any practical classes, you'll have make-up sessions. Your progress as heroes won't slow down—on the contrary, you'll be training directly under the supervision of your assigned guardians." Her voice was firm, cold, but oddly reassuring.

"What about their internships?" Yoroi Musha and Fat Gum chimed in.

At this, Snipe stepped forward. "Unfortunately, we'll have to terminate their internships here. We can't risk anyone knowing their whereabouts. We're dealing with an enemy that has no regard for limits, and this is the safest course of action." The two Pro Heroes nodded in agreement, accepting the decision without protest.

Detective Kawamura then spoke again. "Good. Now that their security is settled and we have a clear path for the investigation, we'll stay in close contact. Everyone here will play a crucial role in taking down this villain group. One way or another, we'll need your help."

With that, everyone exchanged farewells, until only Raiden, Tamaki, and Lady Nagant remained in the room. A heavy silence settled over them.

Ten minutes later, the door opened, and Hawks strolled in, his usual carefree demeanor intact. "Phew, Senpai, what's with the gloomy atmosphere?" he said, eyeing the two students. "So, these are the kids we're looking after, huh?"

"And training," Lady Nagant added, rising to her feet.

"Right, right," Hawks said with a smirk. He turned to Raiden. "Alright, cat kid, you're with me."

Lady Nagant had already started walking toward the exit. Raiden glanced at Tamaki, gave him a quick nod, and followed.

"Where are we going?" he asked.

"To one of my safe apartments," she replied without looking back.

After an hour of navigating the city, Raiden and Lady Nagant finally arrived at their destination. The apartment complex wasn't far, but they had taken multiple detours, weaving through various buildings, entering and exiting side streets, and ensuring they weren't being followed.

Even upon arrival, they didn't use the main entrance. Instead, they entered through the back, slipping into a tunnel system hidden beneath a small shop that connected directly to the apartment building.

As they stepped inside, Raiden couldn't help but voice his thoughts. "This looks like a hotel."

The interior was sleek and well-decorated. Wide hallways stretched ahead, adorned with paintings and small sculptures perched on elegant pedestals. The whole place had an air of quiet luxury.

"It used to be a hotel," Lady Nagant responded flatly. "It went bankrupt, then a real estate company bought it, converted the rooms into full apartments, and sold them off."

Raiden noticed the shift in her tone. Usually, she carried herself with a cool confidence—at least, that's how she always appeared in TV interviews. But here, in person, there was something different. A certain heaviness. He considered asking about it but decided against it. It wasn't his place.

After a few more turns down the hallway, they reached Lady Nagant's apartment. It was modern and spacious, but to Raiden, it felt oddly exposed.

The most striking feature was a massive window stretching across an entire wall, offering a breathtaking view of the city below. It was beautiful, but also—concerning.

"You don't think that's a bit… risky?" he asked, eyeing the window warily.

Lady Nagant waved a hand dismissively. "It's bulletproof. One-way vision. Even thermal imaging won't pick us up. I'm a sniper. I don't like being watched."

That made sense. But even with that reassurance, there was still an unmistakable gloom hanging over her. As Raiden looked around, he noticed the place was clean and orderly—for the most part. Near a chair by the window, a few empty wine bottles sat on a small table. He didn't say anything, but the sight only deepened the impression that something weighed on her.

"Did you eat today?" Lady Nagant asked, her voice indifferent as she walked toward the kitchen.

Raiden, still looking out at the city, shook his head. "No. I didn't really have time after everything that happened."

"Good. Come here."

She pulled a tray of pizza from the oven. The moment Raiden caught the scent, his stomach growled in response, betraying his hunger. Without hesitation, he walked over and took a seat.

They ate in silence for a while. It wasn't an uncomfortable silence, but it wasn't exactly pleasant either. Eventually, Raiden spoke—partly just to break the tension.

"Lady Nagant—"

"Kaina is fine," she interrupted.

He blinked. "Oh. Uh, okay. Kaina, what's the plan for tomorrow?"

"Since you're technically in your internship, we'll continue with that. We start at 6 A.M. sharp." She shot him a glance. "To be clear, that means by 6, we're already training. Breakfast, shower—anything you need to do, get it done before then."

Raiden nearly groaned out loud. 'No wonder she seems so miserable—nobody can be happy waking up that early. I thought leaving home and moving to U.A. meant I wouldn't have to wake up at ungodly hours anymore…'

A single fake tear rolled down his cheek as he nodded in reluctant acceptance.

After they finished eating, Kaina showed him to his room. As he stepped inside, something important dawned on him—his clothes were still back at U.A. and Yoroi Musha's agency.

"…I don't have any clothes."

Without missing a beat, Kaina, already walking away, simply said, "We'll pick them up tomorrow."

And that was that. The rest of the evening passed uneventfully. Knowing he had to wake up early, Raiden went to bed at 8 P.M.—like a child with a strict bedtime.

Across the city, Tamaki sat on the couch, eating pizza and sushi alongside Hawks as a movie played in the background. He wasn't sure what to think.

"Are we really just watching a movie?" he wondered.

After a healing session courtesy of Raiden and Recovery Girl, he felt as good as new. But he had expected—wanted—to jump straight into training. After all, the same man who had beaten him so badly had done the same to Raiden years ago, back when his friend barely knew how to use his powers. That thought alone made his frustration simmer.

As if sensing his thoughts, Hawks spoke up.

"You're tense. You should relax—at least for today. Rest is just as important," he said, casually taking a bite of pizza. "Starting tomorrow, you'll be skipping all the pointless U.A. classes. We'll cut straight to the stuff that actually matters."

Tamaki hesitated before asking, "W-what kind of training?" His voice was barely above a mumble as he pulled his hoodie slightly over his face.

Hawks smirked. "The kind they don't teach in hero schools—stealth, infiltration, intel gathering. You know, real-world skills. Of course, we'll cover some of the standard stuff too, but only the useful parts."

Tamaki blinked. "The useful parts?"

"Yeah. Schools love throwing endless protocols at you—rules for every little situation." Hawks waved a hand dismissively. "But in the field? Those plans never survive reality. Something always goes wrong. You gotta know how to adapt."

Tamaki mulled over that for a moment before gathering the courage to ask, "So… we start tomorrow?" He cautiously reached for another piece of sushi.

"Mmm, yeah," Hawks said, stretching. "Around 10 A.M. I like my sleep."

At 5 a.m. sharp, Raiden woke up.

"Same time as always," he muttered as he looked at the clock, stretching before heading to the bathroom. The private shower still felt strange to him. "I've never had one inside my room before., that a level up I guess?"

Once he was ready, he put on a black tracksuit that had been left for him—courtesy of Kaina. As he stepped outside, he found her finishing up breakfast. The clock read 5:15 a.m.

"Morning. Sit," Kaina said, setting down a plate. "After we eat, we'll go pick up your things. Then your new training begins."

Raiden sat down and hesitated for a moment before asking, "What kind of training will I be doing?"

Kaina glanced at him. "Do you know what kind of hero I am?"

Raiden tilted his head. He knew she was combat-oriented, but beyond that, he wasn't sure. He shook his head. "No, not really."

"I specialize in dismantling criminal networks—stealth, infiltration, intelligence gathering." She leaned back slightly. "That's what I'll be teaching you, today will be a practical exercise, but won't be useless, with luck, we will catch a clue of what happened two days ago"

Raiden's curiosity sparked. "That sounds… interesting."

Kaina smirked. "Oh, you have no idea how 'interesting' it can get." Her tone carried a hint of sarcasm, and after that, the conversation fell into silence.

After breakfast, they went out to gather Raiden's belongings. Along the way, they realized his wardrobe wasn't enough—he would be moving between different safe houses for an indefinite period, so more clothes were necessary.

Once they returned home to drop off the extra luggage, Kaina explained how their movements would work. They would relocate every few days, but the timing would always be unpredictable—six days in one place, then maybe five in another, then eight, seven, four, nine. The numbers would be randomized by rolling a die.

The same method applied to the locations. Kaina had assigned numbers to seven different safe houses, and another die roll would determine where they moved next.

"Simple but effective," she remarked. "This way, nobody can predict our pattern."

Once everything was settled, Kaina took Raiden on a mission. She didn't explain the details until they were crouched on a rooftop overlooking a busy commercial district.

"This is a test," she said, watching the crowd below. "I need to assess how you apply your abilities in the field. Today, you're authorized to use your Quirk fully. Just don't break anything."

Raiden nodded. "What's the mission?"

Kaina gestured toward the area. "A drug dealer operates around here. He—or they—have been avoiding the police for weeks. That's where we come in. Your job is to identify them, track them to their distributors, and—if possible—find their supplier."

Raiden scanned the bustling streets. Most people were focused on their daily routines, oblivious to their surroundings. No one seemed suspicious at first.

He narrowed his focus, looking for patterns—movements that didn't quite fit. Then, he saw it. A man weaving in and out of the crowd, stopping to talk to different people in quick succession.

Raiden smirked. "Got you."

His eyes followed the man, watching as he repeated the same behavior over and over. There was no doubt—this was their guy.
