Chapter 1 - Mask Girl 1

7:10 AM

Grinn... Grinn...

The annoying sound of my Alarm rang out for the uptenth time, making me so frustrated in my sleep. I flung up feeling so annoyed the alarm had to interrupt my beauty sleep. Turning the alarm off, I yourned loudly when my eyes ran into the ticking hour hand and the minute hand.

"What! Is 7:10 already? Oh My Goodness, I'm so damn late!" I exclaimed as I sprang up and hurriedly arranged my bed before hurrying to the bathroom.

"Miss Annie is surely gonna get me fired! I'm supposed to resume work at her canteen by 7:00 and now, I'm damn late." I kept mumbling to myself as I rushed to the bathroom to have my bath.

Rounding up my bath, I walked to my mini wardrobe and ransacked it looking for an appropriate cloth to wear.

Settling for a plain black jean and a bulgy polo, I hurriedly wore it on, packed my hair into a ponytail. I picked up my bag and my phone which had several cracked lines on the screen before walking out of my room to our mini living room to find my elder brother Derrick sniffing cocaine while seated on our worn out couch and his nose on the wooden center table where the white substance was placed.

Already used to my brother's weird lifestyle, I tried ignoring him as I made for the exit door.

"Hey Sydney!" I heard Derrick called tipsily, making me halt on my movement.

"You haven't given me cash for my upkeep today. Are you tryna neglect me and leave me stranded?" Derrick asks as he knits his brows in thought.

I frowned at his annoying words. "Isn't it time for you to get something done for yourself, Derrick? How am I supposed to take care of your needs, give you money for your cocaine and still have to gather up for our mother's hospital bill? Can you be a little bit thoughtful, derrick?" I rasped out in one breath. I just couldn't hold it in any longer. How can a grown up Guy like him keep depending on his kid sister and also beat her up when she declines giving him money? Isn't it absorbed?

"Did you seriously just speak to me in such a manner!? Seems you've grown two heads. Give me some cash now and quite spilling out Rubbish!" Derrick yelled infuriated.

I know Derrick Is tipsy already and if I should decline one more, He's definitely gonna get up and give me a resounding slap which I don't need right now. I reluctantly pulled out some cash from my bag and threw it at him as I immediately stormed out of the house. Derrick is surely gonna rant. I gave him such a little amount of money and I'm not in for his rants.

I flung down a cab and headed straight to work.

After paying off the cab man, I took in a deep breath before heading to the canteen door.

Pulling the glassy door open, I walked in to meet Miss Annie's angry face glaring hard at me. I immediately knew this wasn't gonna be good. Mustering little courage, I muttered "Good morning, Mrs Annie." I said with a smile you could identify as (Fake).

" And what's so good about the morning, Sydney? Get out! You're Fired!" She yelled, making all the customers ' eyes turn towards my direction. I felt so embarrassed that I had to lower my gaze.

I'm seriously in need of 10 Million dollars for my mother's surgery and I've only managed to gather up just 50 dollars. It was supposed to be 100 dollars, i Didn't know how Derrick had managed to locate where I had hidden the money and stole 50 dollars.

Aren't I so unfortunate? This same kidney failure had taken the life of my beloved Father and now, my mother is suffering the same fate as my father. how am I gonna get the money for her surgery when I couldn't get a well paying job since I don't have a certificate?

Walking along the streets of L.A in deep thought, the ringing of my phone jolts me out of my thoughts. I retrieved the phone out of my bag and saw my best friend's name flashing on the screen. Pouching the answer button repeatedly due to the cracked screens, it finally responded.

"Hey, Rolly." I muttered with my voice so low that you would hardly hear me unless you're closer to me.

"What's up, bestie? I knew you were battling with your cracked screen that's why you didn't pick up on time.

I chuckled at that but didn't say a word as I'd only let out a sign.. Rolly definitely knows so much about it and likewise me.

"What's wrong, Sydney? You don't sound okay. Is something wrong?" Rolly added from the other end of the phone. Normally, She knows her friend Won't respond to that with just a sign or chuckle. They would normally laugh about it.

"I've been sacked again, Rolly. I'm so frustrated right now." I said .

Rolly felt so sad for her friend. Why is life so cruel to her? She had thought to herself before muttering. "It's alright besty, I'm sure there's a reason for everything and it's definitely gonna be okay soon. Why don't you come over to my apartment so I could at least cheer you up? " Rolly inquires.

I really do need someone to cheer me up right now before I lose my mind. I reluctantly accepted her invitation.

"I'll be there in a bit" I utter as Rolly dropped her call after giggling like a 1year old kid.

It's a good thing Rolly had to call when I needed someone to talk to.Rolly has been my backbone ever since I'm passing through these challenges.

Rolly just rounded up in college, has an extremely wealthy boyfriend who takes good care of her and even rented a well furnitured house for her. Rolly loves dressing crazy, loves partying and clubbing and that's where she had met her boyfriend Leonard Dickson.

If not for my Dad's sudden death, I would have graduated from college. We weren't that rich, but neither were we that poor. we could be classified as middle class.

Well, everyone isn't that fortunate and I guess I'm among the unfortunate ones.
