The next day, Sara found herself standing under the grand glass structure of Knight Enterprises, her nerves frayed moment after moment. She had wavered over coming, but in the end, bewitchment or fear-gripped curiosity won all arguments. She needed to know what Ethan wanted. The moment she stepped into this ultra-modern lobby, she was overwhelmed by a feeling of being much too small. The marbled flooring gleamed under chandeliers' light, and the buzz of activity ringing around her reminded her how far isolated she was from this world. The receptionist sent her to the highest floor, so it seemed that the elevator had been taking long before it opened up, revealing an entire massive office space. Beyond the floor-to-ceiling glass windows lay a breathtaking view of the city, but her sight was on the man standing near the desk with his back toward her."Mr. Knight, your guest has arrived," said Ethan's assistant and stepped out, leaving the two alone.Ethan turned slowly, and she was caught up in his piercing blue eyes. He was dressed smartly in a suit, looking the whole powerful CEO in form. But there was something besides that in his eyes: a flicker of emotion she could not entirely read."Sara," he raised his voice to make it a call but seemed to use restraints. "It's been a long time."Sara swallowed hard, steadying her voice as she said, "What do you want, Ethan?"He gestures at the free chair facing him. "Sit."Reluctantly, she sat down with her heart pounding as she found herself sitting opposite he."Let's be straight," Ethan then said as he leaned slightly forward. "About that night at the gala ... I had this feeling like I knew you. So I had my team look into you."Sara froze, twisting at her stomach."And then," said Ethan, his voice lower but more deliberate than he silenced, "I saw a picture of your son."Sara's breath caught in her throat."His name is Noah, isn't it?" Ethan asked as his eyes narrowed. "And he's … what? Three years old?"Her silence was silent enough confirmation. The muscles in Ethan's jaw tightened, and the tone in his voice sharpened. "Is he mine?"Sara's lips trembled as she forced the words out. "Yes. Noah is your son."The room turned silence as her confession hanged heavy between them. Ethan stood abruptly and strode to the window, fists clenched."You knew," he said, voice low but subdued with anger. "You knew and you didn't tell me.""I tried!" Sara shot back, her voice shaking. "I tried to reach you, but it was impossible. I didn't have your number, your address-nothing! What was I supposed to do?""You should've tried harder," Ethan muttered, and his tone was very cold.Sara stood and flared her anger. "Don't even dare blame me! You left with no word, Ethan. You made it clear that I'm not in your life anymore. I'd do what I have to do-for my son.""Our son," Ethan quietly corrected her.But Ethan's phone interrupted their conversation and buzzed angrily upon the table. He first ignored it, but when the sound persisted, he frowned and finally picked up the phone. He looked at the messages, and his face darkened."What?" Sara asked, feeling a sudden rush of anxiety.Ethan slowly put the phone down, jaw tight. "There's something you need to know."Her stomach turned. "What do you mean?"Ethan's eyes caught hers, his voice now very grave: "Somebody else knows about Noah. And whoever that is...they're watching you."Sara felt all her blood turn cold.To Be Continued....
