Chapter 45 - Shimada, a new student

Izumi realized that the parasite wasn't his friend Dekim, who had been unable to make it recently for undisclosed reasons. Confused, as he made his way to where the parasite was, numerous expectations and possibilities flooded Izumi's mind. To ease his nerves, he decided to start a conversation with Migi.

"Could it be that Tamiya Ryoko has returned? I don't think so; it's more likely that it's that monster who killed my mother. Has he recovered from that injury?" Izumi exclaimed.

"It seems this is another one," Migi responded.

"It's not Oda and his parasite, is it? Is he here to kill me?! No, what am I saying?" Izumi said, feeling anxious.

"He doesn't seem to carry any hostility," Migi remarked about the parasite in the building.

"What should I do?" Izumi paused, hesitating.

"Let's meet him; let's find out who he is," Migi suggested.

"Meet the enemy!" Izumi said, glancing at his right hand.

"And who said he's our enemy? He might not be," Migi seemed to convince Izumi. Not every parasite is an enemy; he could be like Dekim or Oda...

Izumi changed his plan. Instead of approaching the parasite directly, he chose to step away from the crowd and wait for him on the top floor of the building.

"He knows we're here. He's approaching us calmly. He's of the Tamiya type, not bloodthirsty, the kind you can reason with," Migi described the parasite's character.

"Reason with him? What do you mean by that?" Izumi asked, still waiting for the parasite's arrival, unable to grasp what Migi meant.

"He's here," Migi announced.

Confident, Izumi turned his back on the parasite, unconcerned about its strength.

"Izumi, right?" the parasite said.

It was the same parasite that Tamiya had sent on a mission to observe Izumi. Izumi's sharp gaze expressed his surprise at how it knew his name.

"Who are you?!" Izumi turned to face the parasite, seeing its appearance for the first time.

"I must admit, you're different from what I imagined. You look strong," the parasite complimented.

"What brings you here? What do you want?" Izumi demanded.

"Izumi, what are you two talking about?" a student randomly interrupted.

"I've never seen you before. Are you a transfer student?" the student asked the parasite.

In an unexpected reaction, the parasite punched the student in the nose, considering him an intruder in the conversation with Izumi.

"You've overstepped your boundaries. I'm Shimada; I've settled on that name. I thought at first about forming a friendship with you, or rather, both of you," Shimada said.

"What's with this guy?!" Izumi thought aloud, while Migi closely observed the situation.

"I need to go, Izumi. Can you take me to the third class?" Shimada said.

"The third class?! That's Murano's class!" Izumi thought, feeling annoyed.

"I'm looking forward to gym class; I think it's a combined session between our classes," Shimada said, his eyes gleaming and a sly smile finishing his statement.

Shimada didn't seem to possess Tamiya's intelligence, but he had her logic, as Migi had predicted. His words were measured, and he didn't disclose why he was at the university. He was somewhat arrogant and reckless, a trait evident when he punched the student who intruded on his conversation with Izumi.

Shimada was in the third class, the same class that Murano was in, which annoyed Izumi. Would Shimada pose a threat to Murano if he learned about her relationship with Izumi, or would his focus solely be on Izumi as Tamiya had instructed?

It seemed that the gym class Shimada had been waiting for didn't take long to start. All the students were on the field, and the instructor organized a short-distance race, where Izumi initially took the lead.

"If I take this seriously, I could set a new world record," Izumi thought to himself.

He slowed down to allow the other students to take the top spots.

"What! 10 seconds and 8 tenths?" said a student holding the timer, surprised by the time achieved by the newcomer, Shimada, who took first place.

Shimada became the talk of the school; many students approached him, impressed, eager to have a standout friend to boast about to their peers.

"It's strange for a student to transfer at this time of year. He's so handsome," Yuko said to her friends.

"Yes, he said he had to move because of his father's job," Murano replied.

"I'm jealous of you girls; I wish I were in Shimada's class," one of the students exclaimed.

"I thought you liked Izumi," Yuko teased, trying to provoke her classmate.

"You do too!" the girl shot back with a wide smile.

"What! Stop teasing me!" Yuko said, embarrassed.

"But Izumi seems to lean towards Murano, right?" the girl said, glancing at Murano.

Shimada kicked the ball skillfully, showing off his football skills in front of Izumi, who stood nearby with Migi visible on his right hand, watching Shimada's display.

"Sports are good; the more you practice, the better you become at using your body," Shimada said as he continued to juggle the ball.

"What do you mean by that?" Izumi asked, confident that Shimada was hinting at something.

"Are you planning to kill me the moment you get the chance?" Izumi added.

"You misunderstood me. Is that what your right hand thinks too?" Shimada replied, stopping his footwork.

"I know you're not the reckless type; the proof is that you didn't start a fight when you first saw me. What's the deal with Tamiya? Did she send you to kill me?" Izumi questioned.

"Tamiya? I see, she's going under another name now," Shimada thought aloud.

"Well, you're somewhat right, but that's not the point. I don't intend to harm you or anyone else at the university. In fact, I haven't harmed a human lately, as far as I remember. I live on a diet similar to what humans eat. If parasites learn to live without killing humans, there wouldn't be any problems, right?" Shimada explained.

"Do you expect me to believe what you're saying?" Izumi replied skeptically.

"We're looking for a way to coexist with humans on your planet. We want you to think about it, since you two seem to get along—a mix of human and parasite without issues," Shimada said.

"What you're saying is intriguing; you've succeeded in piquing my curiosity," Migi remarked.

"Really?" Shimada said softly.

"But I'm inclined to believe only part of what you say," Migi added.

"Alright, that's fair," Shimada answered.

"I don't want to engage in any conflict either, so let's wrap up this conversation for today," Migi suddenly decided to end the dialogue.

"Let's go, Izumi," he turned to his host, then said to Izumi.

"Why now?" Izumi asked, surprised and curious about the reason.

Migi poked Izumi to silence him and urged him to follow his suggestion—to walk away. Izumi didn't argue and excused himself, moving away from the parasite, but it felt as if he were walking on hot coals. He wanted to find a quiet place with Migi to understand why he wanted to leave.

"What's going on? We haven't finished talking yet," Izumi said, raising his right hand to eye level.

"Izumi, I need to sleep," Migi replied.

"Are you tired again?" Izumi complained.

"I'll sleep for about four hours," Migi said.
