Chapter 2: The First Step
The morning sun spilled across Adam's domain, illuminating the vibrant grassland with a golden hue. The air was fresh, carrying the scent of dew-soaked earth and wildflowers. Brutus, his newly tamed Infernal Boar, lay sprawled in front of the cabin, its massive body rising and falling with deep, steady breaths.
Adam stepped outside, stretching his arms and taking a deep breath. It still felt surreal—this new world, his domain, and the system panel that had changed everything.
He swiped his hand, and the familiar blue interface appeared.
Domain Status:
Territory Name: Unnamed
Land Tier: 1 (Grassland)
Structures: Wooden Cabin (Basic)
Resources: None
Population: 1 (Adam Miller)
Tamed Creatures: 1 (Infernal Boar - Brutus)
Abilities Available:
A massive list scrolled before him, but Adam focused on the low-ranked abilities that seemed most useful for the immediate future.
Territory Aura (C) was already active, passively attracting individuals with potential. He couldn't control when or who would arrive, but the system promised results soon.
Soil Enrichment (D) and Seed Germination (C) had already proven their worth. They'd be crucial for sustaining himself until he expanded further.
Then there was Adaptation Boost (SS), his most intriguing unlocked ability. According to its description, it had the power to upgrade his existing abilities when specific conditions were met.
"First things first," Adam muttered, surveying his small plot of land. "Food and defense."
---
The area around the cabin was rich with potential. The soil was dark and fertile, the grass lush and vibrant. Adam marked out a small plot for farming, using the tools he'd found inside the cabin. He began tilling the soil, his hands blistering from the effort.
The work was grueling, but with Manual Dexterity (F) aiding his precision and Enhanced Stamina Recovery (F) allowing him to push through fatigue, he made steady progress.
After scattering seeds into the freshly tilled rows, Adam activated Seed Germination. A soft green glow emanated from his hands, sinking into the soil. Within moments, sprouts began to emerge, their leaves unfurling toward the sunlight.
He smiled, wiping sweat from his brow. "Not bad for day one."
---
As the day wore on, Adam decided to explore the edges of his territory. Brutus followed closely, its massive frame providing an imposing presence.
The boundary of his domain was marked by a faint shimmering barrier, separating his safe zone from the wild, unclaimed lands beyond. The forest loomed ahead, its trees ancient and colossal, their bark glowing faintly in the shadows.
A rustling sound caught his attention. Adam froze, his hand resting on Brutus's back.
From the underbrush emerged a creature unlike anything he'd seen before. It resembled a fox, but its fur shimmered like molten silver, and its eyes glowed a piercing blue. The creature was small, barely reaching Adam's knees, but it radiated an aura of intelligence and power.
System Alert:
Species Identified: Lumina Fox (Rare).
Status: Hostile.
"Great," Adam muttered. "Another fight."
The Lumina Fox darted forward, moving faster than Adam could react. Brutus roared, stepping between Adam and the creature, but the fox leapt gracefully to the side, avoiding the boar's charge.
Adam's system activated automatically.
Beast Taming Activated.
Target: Lumina Fox. Success Rate: 50%.
"Let's try this again," Adam said, focusing his mind.
The fox was more challenging to connect with than Brutus had been. Its thoughts were sharp and calculating, its mistrust palpable. But Adam pressed on, projecting calm and control.
Finally, the connection solidified. The fox stopped its attack, tilting its head as it regarded Adam with curious eyes.
Taming Successful. Companion Acquired: Lumina Fox.
Adam let out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding. "You're a feisty one," he said, crouching down. The fox padded closer, sniffing his outstretched hand before nuzzling it briefly.
"I'll call you Luna," Adam said, smiling.
---
By the time Adam returned to the cabin, the sun was beginning to set. The sky blazed with shades of orange and pink, casting long shadows across the grassland.
Brutus and Luna settled near the cabin, their contrasting forms oddly harmonious. Adam sat by the fire, his thoughts racing.
The system had given him tools, but it was up to him to use them wisely. His abilities were a mix of humble and extraordinary, and he couldn't afford to underestimate either.
As he stared into the flames, a new notification appeared.
System Update:
Territory Aura Activated. First Visitor Arriving.
Adam's heart skipped a beat. A visitor? He glanced toward the edge of his domain, where a figure was approaching through the tall grass.
The person was humanoid but carried an otherworldly air. As they stepped closer, Adam realized it was a young woman with pointed ears and a slender frame. Her silver hair glimmered in the fading light, and her emerald eyes were sharp with determination.
System Alert:
Species Identified: Elf.
Role: Herbalist (Intermediate).
The elf stopped a few feet away, her gaze wary but curious. "Are you the one responsible for this domain?" she asked, her voice melodic yet firm.
Adam stood, trying not to let his surprise show. "I am. Who are you?"
She hesitated before replying. "My name is Elyra. I was drawn here by… something. A feeling. Your territory has potential, but it's woefully underdeveloped."
Adam chuckled. "Yeah, well, I just got here."
Elyra studied him for a moment before nodding. "If you'll have me, I can help you grow this place. But only if you prove yourself worthy."
"Prove myself?" Adam raised an eyebrow.
Elyra gestured toward the forest. "There's a grove not far from here with rare herbs. I need them for my work, but it's guarded by beasts. Bring them to me, and I'll stay."
Adam glanced at the darkening forest, then at his companions. Brutus snorted, and Luna flicked her tail, both ready for the challenge.
"Deal," Adam said, his determination growing.
This was just the beginning. If he could attract someone like Elyra, there was no telling what his domain could become.
