Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: A Heavy Burden

The days passed quietly, but Clara felt anything but calm. The strange power inside her seemed to grow stronger, and with it came a fear she couldn't shake. She couldn't talk to anyone about it—not even Emily. Every time she thought of sharing her secret, the warning echoed in her mind: "You must not tell anyone."

At home, Evelyn's coldness had only gotten worse. Clara tried her best to help around the house, hoping to ease some of the tension, but it didn't matter. Evelyn always found something to criticize.

"You forgot to sweep the porch," Evelyn said one evening, her voice sharp.

"I'll do it now," Clara replied quickly, reaching for the broom.

"You should've done it earlier," Evelyn snapped. "Why do you always wait until I have to remind you?"

Alan stepped in, his tone firm. "Evelyn, give her a break. She's trying."

"She's always trying," Evelyn muttered under her breath, walking away.

Clara's chest tightened. She looked at Alan, who gave her a reassuring smile.

"It's okay, Clara," he said softly. "Don't let her get to you."

Clara nodded, but the sting of Evelyn's words lingered.

At school, things weren't much better. Her classmates still avoided her, and the strange incident in science class had only made things worse. People whispered about her, their voices carrying just enough for her to hear.

"Did you see what happened in science last week?"

"Yeah, it was so weird. The flame just exploded."

"I think it was her. She's so strange."

Clara kept her head down, pretending not to hear. She was used to being the odd one out, but it still hurt.

During lunch, she sat alone at the far end of the cafeteria. She poked at her food, her appetite gone.

"Hey."

Clara looked up to see Emily standing in front of her, holding a tray.

"Mind if I sit?" Emily asked, smiling.

Clara shook her head. "Of course not."

Emily sat down and started eating. For a moment, neither of them spoke.

"You've been quiet," Emily said finally, her eyes searching Clara's face. "Is something bothering you?"

Clara hesitated, her heart racing. She wanted to tell Emily everything, but she couldn't. "I'm fine," she said, forcing a smile.

Emily frowned but didn't push. "You know you can talk to me, right? About anything."

"I know," Clara said softly.

They sat in silence for the rest of lunch, the unspoken words hanging heavy in the air.

---

That night, Clara lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. Sleep didn't come easily anymore. Her thoughts were a whirlwind of questions and fears.

As she closed her eyes, the air in the room seemed to shift. A faint whisper brushed past her ears, soft but unmistakable.

"Clara..."

Her eyes snapped open. She sat up, her heart pounding.

"Who's there?" she whispered, her voice trembling.

The room was silent. She scanned the shadows, her breath catching in her throat. Then she saw it—a faint glow near her window.

Clara froze. The glow grew brighter, and a figure began to take shape. It was the same shadowy creature she had seen in the forest.

"You again," Clara whispered, her voice a mix of fear and anger.

The creature's glowing eyes locked onto hers. "The power inside you grows, child," it said, its voice deep and echoing. "But you do not yet understand it."

"I don't want it," Clara said, her voice shaking. "Take it back."

The creature laughed, a low, rumbling sound. "It is not something that can be given or taken. It is part of you now."

"Why me?" Clara asked, her voice breaking. "Why is this happening to me?"

The creature tilted its head. "You will learn the truth in time. But beware, child. The power you hold will bring both light and shadow to your life. Use it wisely."

Before Clara could respond, the creature vanished, leaving her alone in the darkness.

---

Clara sat on her bed, her mind racing. She didn't understand what was happening to her, but one thing was clear: she couldn't let this power control her.

"I'll figure this out," she whispered to herself. "I have to."

She didn't know how, but she was determined to learn more about her strange abilities. And for the first time in days, she felt a spark of hope.

But deep down, she couldn't shake the creature's words. "Light and shadow." What did it mean? And what would it cost her to find out?
