Chapter 12 - The Giraffe Who Had a Tall Ego

Jasper's reputation as the Kingdom's "beast tamer extraordinaire" was beginning to precede him. It wasn't just about taming dangerous beasts anymore. No, now he was a professional problem-solver. And by problem-solver, he meant dealing with creatures that had bigger egos than their actual size.

The next creature? A giraffe. But not just any giraffe. This giraffe had the audacity of thinking it was the king of the jungle. It strutted around like it was the most regal, majestic creature to ever exist—despite the fact that giraffes weren't exactly known for ruling anything, especially not the jungle.

Jasper rolled his eyes as he trudged through the sun-dappled forest to the giraffe's kingdom, which, as it turned out, was on top of a massive hill. The giraffe had a serious superiority complex and insisted on claiming the highest point in the region as its personal throne.

Of course, it wasn't just the height thing. Oh no. The giraffe was also incredibly picky about its diet. It refused to eat the normal leaves like the other giraffes. This particular diva of the savannah only ate leaves from one specific tree—known to be a pain to find, located on the farthest edge of the forest.

"Great," Jasper muttered to himself. "First, I deal with a lazy sloth, then a fire-breathing behemoth, and now I've got to deal with a giraffe who thinks it's the next big thing in royalty."

He finally reached the base of the hill. From here, he could see the giraffe's ridiculous, oversized head poking out above the treetops, swaying gracefully as if it was posing for a painting.

"Okay, let's get this over with," Jasper sighed.

He made his way up the steep hill, trying not to slip on the loose rocks. As he reached the top, he found himself face to face with the giraffe, who was casually munching on some leaves like it had all the time in the world.

"Ah, a human," the giraffe said, glancing down at Jasper. "What do you want, peasant? Can't you see I'm trying to enjoy my lunch in peace?"

Jasper stared up at the giraffe, blinking in disbelief. "Wait, hold on a second. Did you just... call me a peasant? Are you seriously calling me that? You're a giraffe, not a king!"

The giraffe flicked its tail in annoyance. "I am above you, human. Look at my height. Look at my elegance. I am the royalty of this forest, and I shall be treated as such."

Jasper sighed. This was going to be a long day.

"Okay, Mr. King of the Jungle," he said, sarcasm dripping from his voice. "You want to be treated like royalty? Fine. But first, you've got a little problem. You're eating the wrong leaves."

The giraffe blinked, clearly taken aback. "Excuse me? My leaves are perfect. I don't eat the common stuff that other, lesser giraffes eat. I have standards."

"Yeah, well, your standards are making you a pain in the neck," Jasper said. "You've got a whole forest of leaves, and you're turning up your nose at them for no reason. You're also causing a headache for the people in the town below, who can't even walk through the forest without you looking down on them from your 'throne.'"

The giraffe's eyes narrowed. "You dare insult me? Do you not know who I am? I am the perfect specimen of giraffedom! I am majestic, I am tall, and I—"

"Okay, okay," Jasper interrupted, rubbing his temples. "I get it. You're the tallest thing around. But guess what? It doesn't make you right about everything. I'm not here to worship you. I'm here to get you to stop being a drama queen about leaves and, you know, maybe come down from your self-made pedestal."

The giraffe snorted, clearly offended. "I am the highest being in this forest! No one is worthy of being above me!"

Jasper raised an eyebrow. "You do realize that being on top of a hill just makes you the tallest dweeb in the forest, right?"

The giraffe blinked, taken aback by the insult. It opened its mouth to retort, but Jasper cut it off before it could launch into another monologue about how amazing it was.

"You're going to eat these leaves," he said firmly, holding up a bunch of perfectly ordinary leaves he had gathered from the trees below. "And you're going to stop acting like the queen of the world. Because if I have to come back up here again and listen to you complain, I'll personally find a tree that's even higher than this one. And I'll make you climb it yourself."

The giraffe stared down at the leaves, then back at Jasper. There was a long pause, and for a second, Jasper thought it might actually listen.

Then, with an indignant huff, the giraffe bent its neck down to examine the leaves with its big, judgmental eyes.

"These are common leaves," the giraffe said, wrinkling its nose. "I can already tell they're beneath me."

Jasper threw his hands in the air. "Oh for the love of—are you seriously doing this right now? Just eat them!"

The giraffe hesitated for a moment, then, with a dramatic sigh, it took one of the leaves in its mouth. It chewed it slowly, clearly savoring the flavor.

"Well?" Jasper asked impatiently. "How is it?"

The giraffe's eyes widened. It chewed a few more times, then blinked rapidly as though something had just clicked.

"I... I have been wrong. These leaves," the giraffe said, its voice shaking with newfound realization, "are absolutely delicious. What have I been doing all this time?"

Jasper smirked. "Yeah, I told you. They're just leaves. No need to get all picky about it."

The giraffe nodded, looking sheepish for the first time. "I... I have been a fool. But no longer. From this day forward, I shall accept all leaves as they come, and I will come down from my throne. I shall lead the forest in peace and harmony."

Jasper couldn't help but chuckle. "Well, that's a start. Now, if you really want to make an impact, try not talking about how amazing you are every five seconds. People don't like that."

The giraffe blinked again. "I... I will consider that advice, human. Perhaps I shall just enjoy the view for once and let the rest of the forest admire me from afar."

"Good plan," Jasper said, turning to leave. "Just don't go climbing back up on top of every tree you see. It gets real old, real fast."

The giraffe nodded solemnly. "I will do my best, human. Thank you for your wisdom. You have taught me much today."

Jasper gave a nonchalant wave. "Yeah, whatever. I've got more beasts to deal with."

As he walked back down the hill, Jasper couldn't help but feel a little bit accomplished. Another diva tamed, one slightly-embarrassed giraffe at a time.
