Chapter 7 - Echoes of the Forgotten

The moon hung low over the darkened horizon as Kaida and Ryven made their way through the dense forest, the remnants of the spire's destruction still lingering in the air like a heavy fog. The world felt different now—darker, as if the very fabric of reality had been torn and reshaped by the events that had just unfolded.

Kaida could still hear the faint echo of Kenji's final words in her mind, a whisper that had etched itself into her soul. *"Keep going. Find out the truth."*

Those words were a constant reminder of the promise she had made. The weight of her brother's sacrifice pushed her forward, but the uncertainty of the path ahead made every step feel like a journey through a void.

Ryven walked beside her, his silence a contrast to the storm of emotions swirling within her. His presence was steady, a rock in the midst of the chaos, but Kaida could sense a distance growing between them—a wall built by unspoken words and hidden intentions.

They arrived at the edge of a cliff, the wind howling through the trees as the ground beneath their feet seemed to tremble ever so slightly. Kaida felt it, the lingering power of the spire's collapse still reverberating in the earth.

"Where are we?" Kaida asked, her voice trembling from the cold and the weight of everything that had happened.

Ryven stood at the precipice, staring out into the distance. "The Vale of Echoes," he replied, his tone distant. "It's a place where lost things… and people… are forgotten. But it's also where you'll find the next step in your journey."

Kaida frowned, unsure of what he meant. "The next step? What are you talking about?"

Before Ryven could answer, the ground beneath them rumbled, and from the depths of the valley, a low, mournful howl echoed through the night. It was followed by the sound of something moving—something massive—approaching them.

"What is that?" Kaida asked, her heart racing.

Ryven's eyes darkened as he unsheathed his sword. "An ancient creature. One that guards the next gate."

### The Guardian of the Vale

From the shadows of the trees, a massive figure emerged, its form cloaked in darkness. The creature was a silhouette, its body a twisted amalgamation of shadows and shifting shapes. Its eyes glowed like burning coals, and as it drew closer, the air seemed to grow colder, its presence suffocating.

"This isn't good," Kaida muttered, her hand instinctively going to the hilt of her dagger.

Ryven stepped forward, his sword gleaming in the moonlight. "Stay back, Kaida. This is my fight."

But Kaida shook her head. "No. I'm not standing by while you face this alone."

The creature's eyes locked onto them, its voice a deep, guttural growl. "You have come far, Kaida of the silver hair. But this path is not one you are meant to walk."

Kaida's heart skipped a beat. "How do you know my name?" she demanded, her voice steady despite the fear rising in her chest.

The creature's lips twisted into a cruel smile. "I know many things. And I know what you seek. But it will cost you more than you are willing to pay."

With a roar, the creature lunged forward, its massive form moving with terrifying speed. Ryven swung his sword, striking the creature's side, but it seemed to do little more than make it flinch. The creature's body was like smoke, constantly shifting, avoiding direct strikes.

Kaida's mind raced. *What could defeat something like this?*

In that moment, the book she had been holding—the one that had once been empty—pulsed faintly, its pages glowing with a soft, ethereal light. She pulled it from her bag, opening it instinctively. The symbols had returned, the ancient script now legible. But there was one word that stood out to her, glowing brighter than the rest: *Ignis.*

"Ignis…" Kaida whispered, feeling the weight of the word. It felt familiar, as if it had always been a part of her.

The creature paused, its fiery eyes narrowing. "You cannot command the flames, Kaida. They are beyond you."

Kaida's grip tightened around the book. *Maybe it was time to find out.*

She muttered the word again, louder this time, and to her shock, flames began to surge from the book, wrapping around her hands like serpents of fire. The heat was intense, but it didn't burn her—it was as if the flames recognized her. With a determined look in her eyes, she thrust her hand forward, releasing the fire toward the creature.

The flames shot out with blinding speed, engulfing the creature in an explosion of heat and light. It shrieked, its form disintegrating into nothingness as the fire consumed it.

When the light faded, all that was left was a pile of ashes at their feet.

Kaida stood, her body trembling with the exertion of the power she had just unleashed. Ryven stared at her, his face unreadable.

"You… you've never used that power before," he said quietly, as if testing the reality of what had just happened.

Kaida nodded, still clutching the book. "No. But it's part of the truth I need to uncover. The spire, my brother, all of it… It's connected."

Ryven's eyes softened, a flicker of something unreadable passing through them. "Then we have no time to waste. Let's go."

But as they turned to leave, the ground beneath their feet trembled again, and a voice echoed through the air—this time, not from the creature, but from somewhere deeper within the Vale.

"Kaida… your trials have only just begun."
