Chereads / Threats of Fate / Chapter 18 - The Decision Draws Near, Part 3

Chapter 18 - The Decision Draws Near, Part 3

Just a few minutes later, the school play began.

Seika was the first to appear on stage, wearing a two-piece suit and sneakers.

Seika: "Ah, how boring this is. Always walking around my castle in the same clothes. I want to leave the castle and see the world."

She wandered around, looking to her right and walking a few steps in that direction, then looking to her left and moving again.

Seika: "No matter where I go, everything looks the same. The walls, the people, everything."

A fairy in fresh streetwear appeared suddenly.

Nikki: "Hey, what do you wanna see?"

Seika: "Who are you, and how did you get in here?"

Nikki: "Me? I'm just a fairy, duh."

Seika: "Why are you speaking to me like that?"

Nikki: "What? Got a problem with me?"

Seika: "I thought fairies were always nice and friendly."

Nikki: "Something wrong with me?"

The fairy examined herself, checking her outfit.

Seika: "That's not important. You said you wanted to show me something?"

Nikki: "Oh, yeah, right... what was it again?"

Seika: "I want to see the world and meet other people."

Nikki: "Hmmm... that's tricky. Real tricky."

Seika: "What can you show me, then?"

Nikki: "I can open a door for ya."

Seika: "I could open a door myself."

Nikki: "Then you don't need my help, huh?"

Seika: "No, please! Help me open this door."

Nikki: "I meant a magical door."

Seika: "What's behind this magical door?"

Nikki: "No clue. Could be another world, could just be another room. Who knows?"

Seika: "Oh, please, dear fairy, tell me!"

Nikki: "Nah, just go through it, and you'll see."

Seika: "Thank you, kind fairy. This way, I won't just see my world but another one as well!"

Nikki: "I said maybe."

Seika: "No matter how small the chance, I'll take it. I want to see more than just these walls and this castle."

Nikki: "Wow, you're really fired up."

Seika: "What do you mean?"

Nikki: "Eh, whatever. Just go through and have fun."

Seika: "Ah, dear fairy, how can I ever repay you?"

Nikki: "Don't sweat it. It's my job."

Seika looked at the door, which had appeared in the middle of the room. She grabbed the handle, opened it, and stepped through. The scenery changed, and she was no longer in her castle.

Seika: "Oh, what a beautiful world this is. The green grass, the animals, the nature – it's all so indescribably lovely."

Suddenly, something flew toward her.

Seika: "Ah, what is that coming at me?"

Nikki: "Hey, how's it going?"

It was the same friendly fairy from before.

Seika: "What are you doing in this strange world, dear fairy?"

Nikki: "I live here. Turns out that door just led outside."

Seika: "But, dear fairy, I thought this was a new world."

Nikki: "It is a new world – for you, at least."

Seika: "I don't understand what you mean, dear fairy."

Nikki: "Look... you were stuck with the same old white walls. Now you're outside and thankful for it."

Seika: "So, you're saying all I needed was a change of perspective to feel happy again?"

Nikki: "That's not... uh... yeah, exactly what I meant."

Seika: "You don't sound very confident."

Nikki: "Eh, doesn't matter. Wanna go again?"

Seika: "Go where?"

Nikki: "Through another door."

Seika: "Yes! This world was only my own. I want to see the worlds of others, too."

Nikki: "Ugh, princesses always want more. Fine. Door, come here!"

---

Another door appeared, but this time it was white. Seika walked up to it and grabbed the handle, which felt icy cold. She opened the door and entered a world entirely made of snow and ice.

Seika: "It's so bitterly cold, and I only have my suit!"

But she didn't have to endure the cold for long, as a girl dressed in white with silver hair approached her.

Luna: "Tell me, oh beautiful princess, where do you come from?"

Seika: "I'm traveling through worlds, seeking to see more than just my own."

Luna: "A whole world that belongs only to you? You must truly be a princess."

Seika: "And who are you, if I may ask?"

Luna: "I am the princess of this realm, trapped in snow and ice."

Seika: "Oh, you poor princess. Living in this cold must be so difficult."

Luna: "Yes, if not for my fur coat, I would freeze as well. Come with me, and I'll show you my world."

Seika followed Luna through her frozen realm until they reached a massive tree. Embedded within the tree was a large door, similar to the ones Seika had seen before. Seika approached to open it, but Luna tried to stop her.

Luna: "What are you doing with that door?"

Seika: "I must continue my journey. This world is too cold for me."

Luna: "Then don't leave me here alone. Take me with you on your travels!"

The two princesses grasped the door's handle together, pulling it open. But the moment they did, a strong wind swept through, pulling them both into the next world.

---

Seika: "That wind was so strong, it nearly knocked me over!"

Luna: "Yes, but it wasn't cold. It was a fresh, warm wind."

Seika: "I didn't like how it pulled us in, but the breeze itself wasn't unpleasant."

Luna: "I'm grateful for the freshness it brought."

Seika: "I've had enough of this world. I must move on."

Luna: "How can you reject the beauty I've learned to love?"

Seika: "This isn't the world I'm searching for. My journey must continue."

Luna: "Then I'll stay here. I've come to love this place."

Seika and Luna said their goodbyes, and Seika moved toward the next door. This one was red and dark, and the handle burned to the touch. But Seika, driven by determination, pulled it open with all her might. She stepped through into the next world.

---

Seika: "It's unbearably hot here. This heat is overwhelming..."

Seika began to stumble, nearly collapsing, but a boy in red clothing with two horns ran to catch her.

Jonathan: "Another lost princess. I'll take her to my castle."

Jonathan carried Seika to his castle, placing her gently on a bed. She awoke shortly after.

Seika: "Where am I? It's not as hot anymore. I thought I collapsed from the heat."

She looked at the boy, whose horns glinted as he gazed at her.

Seika: "Ah! And who are you? Where am I?"

Jonathan: "I'm a death angel, and you're in my kingdom."

Seika: "A death angel? Then I've truly fallen and died?"

Jonathan: "What? No! You passed through a magical door and ended up here, with me."

Seika: "Oh, what a relief. I thought it was the end for me."

Jonathan: "If it were, we'd still have met."

Seika: "Your kingdom is too hot for me. I must move on and journey to another world."

Jonathan: "Another world? You won't leave here. You'll stay in my castle."

Jonathan locked Seika in a room, but she wasn't alone.

---

Seika: "Ah, and who are you?"

Sophie: "I am the prince of the Wind Kingdom, captured on my own travels."

Seika: "I am a princess from an ordinary kingdom, also captured on my travels."

Sophie: "An ordinary kingdom? What's that like?"

Seika: "A kingdom where the grass is green, the mountains are high, life flourishes, and animals are happy."

Sophie: "It sounds like a beautiful place. Why did you leave?"

Seika: "I wasn't happy and felt trapped. But now I understand what it means to truly be imprisoned."

Sophie: "Wise words, princess. I, too, left my kingdom because I felt trapped. But I've realized I was only trapping myself."

Seika: "Let's escape this place together."

Sophie: "How do we escape, princess?"

Seika: "There's only one way I can think of: Dear fairy, please help us escape!"

Sophie: "What fairy could possibly help us?"

Once again, Nikki appeared, yawning as she arrived.

Nikki: "What now? I was sleeping. yawn"

Sophie's eyes widened in disbelief at the fairy's sudden appearance.

Sophie: "Oh no... not this fairy!"

Seika: "Dear fairy, please help us escape. We wish to return to our worlds."

Nikki: "I can help, but I can't send you home."

Seika: "Why not, dear fairy?"

Nikki: "Well… the doors only work one way. It's like a security system against intruders."

Seika: "A security system?"

Sophie: "How typical of this fairy."

Nikki looked at Sophie and burst out laughing.

Sophie: "Hey, what's so funny?"

Nikki: "Haha, the prince I helped before is now trapped here!"

Sophie: "What's funny about that?"

Nikki: "You're supposed to be so strong and smart, oh great prince... haha!"

Sophie blushed deeply, turning away in embarrassment.

Seika: "So will you help us escape, dear fairy?"

Nikki: "sigh Alright, but as I said, I can only send you one way. You'll need to pass through five more doors to get back home."

Seika: "If it helps us return, we'll do it."

Nikki: "Fine. Is your princeling coming too?"

Sophie: "Yes, I want to leave this place as well."

Nikki: "Don't get captured again, oh mighty prince."

Sophie: "Yeah, yeah… I'll be careful."

The kind fairy Nikki conjured a new door, this time blue with a bright blue handle.

---

A new door appeared, but this time it wasn't green—it was white. Seika approached the door and grasped the handle, feeling its icy chill. She opened it and stepped into a world made entirely of snow and ice.

Seika: "It's so bitterly cold, and I'm only wearing my suit."

But she didn't have to endure the cold for long, as a girl in white clothing with silver hair approached her.

Seika followed Luna through her icy world until they reached a massive tree. Embedded in the tree was a large door, similar to the others Seika had seen. She approached it to open it, but Luna tried to stop her.

Luna: "What are you doing with that door?"

Seika: "I'm traveling to another world—this one is too cold for me."

Luna: "Then don't leave me here alone. Take me with you on your journey!"

They stood before a yellow door. Together, they grasped the handle and pulled it open. The moment the door opened, a strong wind swept through and pulled them both into the next world.

---

Seika: "That wind was so strong, it nearly knocked me over!"

Luna: "Yes, but it wasn't cold. It was fresh and warm."

Seika: "I didn't like how it pulled us in, but the breeze itself wasn't unpleasant."

Seika and Luna said their goodbyes, and Seika moved on to the next door. It was a red, dark door, and the handle burned to the touch. But with sheer determination, Seika pulled it open and entered the next world.

Seika: "It's unbearably hot. This heat makes me dizzy..."

Seika began to stumble, nearly collapsing, but a boy in red clothing with two horns ran to catch her.

Jonathan: "Another lost princess. I'll take her to my castle."

Jonathan carried Seika into his castle, placing her gently on a bed. She awoke moments later.

Seika: "Where am I? It's not as hot anymore. I thought I collapsed from the heat."

She looked at the boy, his horns gleaming in the dim light.

Seika: "Ah! And who are you? Where am I?"

Jonathan locked Seika in a room, but to her surprise, she wasn't alone.

Seika: "Ah, and who are you?"

Sophie: "I am the prince of the Wind Kingdom, captured during my travels."

Seika: "I am a princess from an ordinary kingdom, also captured during my journey."

Sophie: "An ordinary kingdom? What's that like?"

Seika: "A kingdom where the grass is green, the mountains are tall, life flourishes, and animals are happy."

Sophie: "That sounds beautiful. Why did you leave?"

Sophie: "Hey, what's so funny?"

Nikki: "Haha, the prince I helped earlier is now trapped here!"

Sophie: "What's funny about that?"

Nikki: "You're supposed to be so strong and smart, oh mighty prince... haha!"

Sophie blushed deeply, turning away in embarrassment.

---

Seika: "So, will you help us escape, dear fairy?"

Nikki: "Haha, wait… I… can't… stop… bwahaha!"

Sophie: "Yes, I admit it, I was overconfident."

Nikki: "Oh, it's not even funny anymore."

Nikki abruptly stopped laughing and turned back to Seika.

Nikki: "Alright, but like I said, I can only send you forward, not back. You'll have to go through five more doors to return home."

Seika: "If it means we can return home, then we'll go through all the doors."

Nikki: "If you say so. Is your princeling coming along too?"

Sophie: "Yes, I want to leave this place as well."

Nikki: "Alright, but don't get captured again, oh mighty prince."

Sophie: "Yes, yes… I'll be careful."

The kind fairy Nikki created a new door. This one was blue and had a matching handle.

Nikki: "Careful now, this door leads to the Water Kingdom. You'd better hold hands."

Sophie: "Why would we—Ahhh!"

Before Sophie could finish speaking, a massive wave of water swept them into the kingdom. They clung to each other's hands and swam together until they found themselves on a deserted island.

Seika: "How are we supposed to get out of here?"

Sophie: "Do you think we're trapped here forever?"

Seika: "We must call for her again."

Sophie: "Please, no."

Seika: "Good fairy, please help us once more!"

But the fairy did not respond, much to Sophie's relief. However, Seika was persistent.

Seika: "Good fairy, we need your help!"

Once again, there was no response.

Sophie: "Phew… I thought she might show up again."

Despite Seika's repeated calls, the fairy didn't appear.

Seika: "How will we ever leave this place?"

Sophie looked up at the sky and noticed something unusual.

Sophie: "Look up there, there's a door!"

Seika: "You're right, but why is there a door up there?"

Sophie: "It doesn't matter why. What matters is getting to it."

Seika: "But how can we reach it?"

Sophie: "I have an idea. I'll lift you onto my shoulders so you can open it and continue your journey."

Seika: "But what about you?"

Sophie: "I'll stay here and find another way to escape."

Seika climbed onto Sophie's shoulders and reached the door. She opened it and began pulling herself through. As she turned to offer Sophie a hand, she was suddenly pulled into the next world by an unseen force. The door slammed shut behind her.

Seika tried to reopen it, but the door remained firmly closed.

Seika: "No, open! I need to get him out of there!"

She turned around to see Leonardo standing behind her.

Leonardo: "I saved you. You were about to fall through the door into the ground."

Seika: "No! What have you done? Where am I?"

Leonardo: "I saved you, so now you must love me and dance with me. You're in the Green Kingdom."

Seika: "I don't want to dance. I need to rescue my prince."

Leonardo: "If I help you rescue your prince, will you dance with me?"

Seika: "Yes, I'll dance with you if you help me save him."

And so, Leonardo and Seika set off together, determined to travel through all the worlds to save the prince. They found the first door and entered the Ice Kingdom. However, Luna was no longer there, and they couldn't find anyone to help them. They pressed on and eventually reached the Wind Kingdom, where they reunited with Luna.

---

Luna: "Oh, princess, what are you doing here? And who is your companion?"

Seika: "It's not important. We must hurry and rescue the prince of this kingdom!"

Leonardo: "Not important? I am Leonardo, prince of all worlds!"

Seika: "You are not! You're just my annoying savior."

Leonardo: "How dare you—"

Luna interrupted him.

Luna: "Fine, I'll come with you to rescue my brother."

Seika: "The prince of the Wind Kingdom is your brother?"

Luna: "Yes, it's a long story. I left this kingdom and went to the Ice Kingdom."

Seika: "Then we must hurry. Your brother is alone on a deserted island in the Water Kingdom!"

The three of them quickly made their way to the Water Kingdom. As they approached the red door, Seika couldn't help but think about Sophie.

Seika: "I can't get him out of my mind, the prince who fled this place with me."

Leonardo: "You have me! Why do you keep thinking about the prince?"

Luna: "Because he's much nicer than you!"

Leonardo: "What?"

Seika: "Focus on our goal, my comrades."

Luna: "Oh, right…"

---

They successfully snuck past Jonathan and reached the blue door. However, Luna knew what awaited them in the watery realm beyond and offered a suggestion.

Luna: "I'll open this door and freeze the water, so we can reach my brother quickly and save him."

Seika: "You can use magic?"

Luna: "Yes, during my time in the Ice Kingdom, I learned to control both ice and water."

Seika: "That's incredible. Please, let's do that."

Luna stepped forward, opened the door, and shouted, "WATER, FREEZE INTO ICE!"

Seika and Leonardo were amazed by Luna's magic as she froze the water into a solid path. They carefully crossed the ice to reach Sophie, who could see them coming from afar.

---

Sophie: "My brother, and the princess, you've come to save me!"

Leonardo: "And don't forget Leonardo, the hero of the world!"

Sophie: "And… Leonardo…"

Seika: "We're here to rescue you, prince."

Sophie: "I can't thank you enough, but how are we going to leave this place? Someone must stay behind so the others can pass through the door above."

Luna: "No, my brother. I've learned to control water and ice. We can create another path and find a door to another world."

Seika: "It's amazing. The door I passed through led to my homeland."

Sophie: "And yet, here you are, with me."

Seika: "I don't know what brought me here, but I knew I wanted to see you again!"

Sophie: "I, too, felt our connection."

Leonardo: "Why is no one talking about Leonardo?"

Luna: "Because this is about the bond between two kingdoms, not Leonardo."

Leonardo: "Unbelievable!"

Luna: "Shall we leave Leonardo here in the Water Kingdom?"

Seika and Sophie (together): "Yes, that's a good idea."

Leonardo: "Hey! Don't leave me here with just fish and water!"

Luna: "Then stop meddling and come along."

---

Luna moved ahead and froze more water to create a path. They pressed on and eventually found a violet door. As they opened it, they stepped into an eerie, shadowy land. A ghostly figure appeared before them.

Lirien: "You do not belong here."

Leonardo: "That's correct. We want to go home."

Lirien: "What do you seek in the realm of spirits?"

Leonardo: "I just said—we want to go home."

Lirien: "I wasn't asking you."

Seika: "We are not here to disturb your peace. We only wish to return to my homeland."

Lirien: "To do that, you must tell me the reason for your journey."

Luna: "It was my idea. I wanted to show her the other worlds."

Lirien: "That is not the true reason. I can see through you."

Leonardo: "We wanted to dance together in all the worlds!"

Lirien: "That is also not the true reason."

Seika: "Very well, spirit. I left my homeland because I was unhappy. I wanted to find my happiness and have been traveling through the worlds in search of it."

Lirien: "That is the true reason. You have passed the test."

---

Lirien removed her ghostly costume and began speaking normally.

Lirien: "We often have intruders here. I just wanted to ensure you weren't dangerous."

Seika: "You have intruders? What do they want here?"

Luna: "Yes, there's nothing here but spirits."

Lirien: "This is where spirits from other worlds come when they have not found peace. The intruders try to return them to their old worlds."

Luna: "But isn't that a good thing?"

Lirien: "It disrupts the balance of the worlds and only brings chaos."

Seika: "We are not here to take anyone back. We just want to return to the Green Kingdom."

Lirien: "Then I see the truth in your words, noble princess. Follow me, and I will show you the door to the Metal Kingdom."

---

Lirien led them to a door embedded in the ground. It looked much like the door Leonardo had first pulled Seika through.

Leonardo: "I recognize this door. It leads home!"

Lirien: "Not quite, Leonardo. This door leads to your final challenge: the Trial of Metal."

Seika: "What is the Trial of Metal? Please, tell me, wise spirit."

Lirien: "It is not my task to administer the trial. Only he knows what the trial is and why it exists."

Seika: "Who is he? Can I speak with him? Where can I find him?"

Lirien: "He will answer all your questions. But I have lingered here too long. I must go."

---

Despite Seika's protests, Lirien vanished before she could explain further. The group stood before the metallic, cold, and unyielding door.

Seika: "Ouch, this door is so hard and cold."

Luna: "Yes, but not as cold as the door to the Ice Kingdom."

Sophie: "Enough stalling. It's time to enter and face the final trial."

Leonardo: "I can handle any trial! I am Leonardo!"

The three others shot him icy glares colder than any door they had encountered. Reluctantly, Leonardo fell silent as they opened the door and entered the Metal Kingdom.

---

Seika: "So this is the Metal Kingdom. It's neither hot nor cold, but everything is made of metal."

Luna: "And everything feels so sturdy and unbreakable."

Leonardo: "Just like my muscles!"

Sophie: "Knock it off!"

They looked around, taking in the metallic landscape, when a voice echoed from the distance.

Lucas: "What are you doing in my kingdom?"

Seika: "We are here to complete your trial."

Luna: "We seek to return to our kingdoms."

Sophie: "We are merely travelers passing through."

Lucas: "A trial? Kingdoms? Traveling?"

Seika: "Why is he so confused?"

Lucas: "Well, no one told me about a trial. Is it scheduled for tomorrow?"

Seika: "No, we're here to complete YOUR trial."

Lucas: "But I'm not a teacher."

Luna: "No, the Trial of Metal."

Lucas: "Oh, that trial. I forgot about it."

Seika: "So we can just pass through?"

Lucas: "No, you have to take a test first!"

Sophie: "Isn't that the trial?"

Lucas: "Oh man, I mixed them up. Trial, test—they sound the same, right? Anyway, here's your trial."

Luna: "Please, no math problems!"

Sophie: "Not you too!"

Lucas: "Your challenge is to prove how strong your friendship is. Can your bond withstand the hardness of metal?"

Seika: "Our friendship can endure anything!"

Lucas: "Can it? Well, I guess I'll believe you."

Sophie: "No, you still have to test us!"

Lucas: "Ah, do we really have to do this now?"

Seika: "I understand your thoughts, oh great Master of Metal, but I want to experience for myself just how strong our friendship truly is."

Lucas: "If that's what you want, then I'll give you the test. You must hold hands and combine all your energy to unlock the Great Metal Ring, where the door to the next world lies."

Sophie: "That makes no sense!"

Luna: "Wasn't this something else before?"

Seika: "We will show you the strength of our friendship by opening this ring and advancing to the next world."

---

The group linked hands and formed a circle around the ring on the ground. Slowly, the ring began to rise, revealing a door in its center. The door was made of heavy wood, with a carved symbol in the middle. It radiated weight and strength. The group approached the door together, placing their hands on it. With their combined effort, they pushed it open and stepped through, arriving in a new space.

As they entered, a familiar figure appeared before them.

Nikki: "Hmm… still eating… one sec…"

Seika: "See! It's her—the kind and helpful fairy!"

Sophie: "Ugh, not again! This fairy is the reason we got stuck in the Fire Kingdom."

Luna: "Wait, she rescued you?"

Leonardo: "I could have done the same. You just have to call my name!"

---

Nikki finished eating and turned to address the group.

Nikki: "You did it! You traveled through all the worlds and learned the meaning of friendship. You supported one another, stayed united, and now you've made it here."

Seika: "Oh, dear fairy, was this all your plan to teach us about friendship?"

Luna: "I've learned to appreciate what I have and to find contentment in it."

Sophie: "I've learned that no one ever has to be alone."

Leonardo: "I've learned there are beautiful girls in every world."

Seika: "I've learned that happiness lies within me—and that friends are the most precious treasure of all."

Nikki: "And I've learned… that this sandwich is absolutely delicious!"

---

The group stared at Nikki as she licked her fingers, seemingly oblivious to the importance of the moment.

Seika: "Wait, is that all?"

Nikki: "What more do you want? You're all here, stronger, wiser, and a little less annoying than before. My work is done!"

Sophie: "You barely did anything!"

Nikki: "Hey, don't forget who got you through those doors!"

Luna: "She's right, I suppose. Without her, we wouldn't be here."

Seika: "Thank you, dear fairy. Your guidance, as strange as it was, has helped us all."

Nikki: "Yeah, yeah. Now get out of here before I find more ways to mess with you."

With Nikki's final mischievous grin, the group found themselves standing before a golden door. As they stepped through it, they were greeted by the familiar sights of the Green Kingdom, their home.

Seika: "We're back… We're finally home!"

Luna: "It feels so strange to be here again, after everything we've seen."

Sophie: "Maybe it's time we started appreciating what we have."

Leonardo: "And maybe it's time we start throwing parades for heroes like me!"

Sophie, Luna, and Seika (together): "Leonardo!"

Leonardo: "What? Just a thought."

The group laughed together, their bonds stronger than ever. Though their journey had been challenging, it had taught them lessons they would carry for a lifetime.

Seika (to herself): "I left this world searching for happiness, but maybe happiness was here all along—waiting for me to see it."

With those thoughts, she smiled at her friends and walked forward, ready to embrace her new understanding of the world—and herself.

The audience erupted into applause, cheering for the young actors as they took their bows. Seika, Luna, Sophie, and Leonardo stood hand in hand, their smiles wide as they basked in the joy of their performance. Somewhere backstage, Nikki (in her fairy costume) was munching on a second sandwich, grinning slyly as she whispered:

Nikki: "Best sandwich ever… and maybe, the best play too."
