The storm that night matched the turbulence inside Daniel's mind. Rain lashed against the windows, and the wind howled like a chorus of unseen voices. Elena was asleep upstairs, but Daniel remained in the living room, the photograph of Elias clutched in his hand. Who was this man, really? Why was he tied to Elena's past—and now to his own future?
The next morning, Daniel decided to confront the mystery head-on. If Elias was watching him, then Daniel would find a way to watch back.
Step One: Retracing the Past
Daniel began by calling a close friend, Carter, who worked in private investigations.
"Elias," Carter repeated when Daniel described the man and shared the photo. "Not much to go on, but I can dig around. Might take a few days."
"I'll take anything you can find," Daniel said. "I need to know who this guy is and why he's fixated on Elena."
Carter chuckled darkly. "Fixated doesn't sound good. You sure you want to know?"
"No," Daniel admitted, "but I don't have a choice."
That afternoon, Daniel found Elena in the study, sorting through her journal and old notes. The tension in her shoulders told him she was far from at peace.
"Elena," he began gently, "I need you to tell me more about Elias. You said he oversees the deals, but what does that actually mean?"
She sighed, her fingers gripping the edge of the desk. "Elias is... a liaison. He's not one of the watchers, but he works for them. He helps enforce their contracts, makes sure no one tries to break the rules."
"How did you meet him?"
Elena hesitated, her gaze distant. "It was after I first met Gabriel. I'd gone to Gabriel looking for help—my life was falling apart. Gabriel introduced me to Elias, and... he explained the terms of the deal."
"What kind of terms?"
"He promised to erase my debts, give me success in my career, and... protect me from the darkness I felt closing in. But there was a cost—a future payment. I was desperate, Daniel. I didn't ask enough questions."
"Did Elias ever hint at what that payment might be?"
Elena shook her head. "He was always vague. But he made one thing clear: the watchers always collect."
Step Two: A Meeting
Carter called the next day with an update.
"I've got something," he said. "Your guy, Elias, doesn't exist in any official capacity, but there are whispers. He's been linked to strange occurrences—a few missing persons cases, rumors about underground dealings. But get this—his name popped up in a private estate sale. Big place, off the grid."
Daniel felt his pulse quicken. "Where?"
Carter gave him the address. "Be careful, man. Whoever this guy is, he's not playing by normal rules."
That evening, Daniel told Elena about the address.
"I want to confront him," Daniel said.
Elena's eyes widened in alarm. "Are you insane? You can't just walk into his world. That's exactly what he wants."
"And what's the alternative? Sit here and wait for him to come for us?"
Elena gritted her teeth, clearly torn. Finally, she said, "If you're going, I'm coming with you."
"No," Daniel said firmly. "It's too dangerous. I'll do this alone."
"Daniel—"
"I'm not losing you, Elena," he interrupted. "Not to him."
The Confrontation
The estate was an imposing structure hidden deep in the woods. Daniel approached cautiously, his flashlight cutting through the darkness. The air was heavy, as though the land itself resisted his presence.
Inside, the house was eerily silent. The grand hall was lined with faded portraits, each subject's eyes seeming to follow him. At the end of the hall, a single door stood ajar, faint candlelight flickering within.
He pushed the door open and found Elias seated at a table, a decanter of dark liquid and two glasses before him.
"Ah, Daniel," Elias said smoothly, gesturing to the empty chair. "I've been expecting you."
Daniel's hands clenched into fists. "Who the hell are you, and what do you want with my wife?"
Elias chuckled, pouring a glass of the liquid and sliding it toward Daniel. "Such a dramatic entrance. Sit, and we'll talk."
Daniel remained standing. "Answer me."
Elias sighed, leaning back in his chair. "Your wife made a deal, Daniel. A rather ambitious one. I simply ensure that deals are honored."
"What does that have to do with me?"
"Everything," Elias said, his sharp eyes glinting. "You see, Elena's payment wasn't just her soul—it was her love. The watchers thrive on connections, on what binds humans together. They find it... delicious."
Daniel's stomach turned. "You're saying I'm part of her payment?"
"Not just part. You are the payment," Elias said, standing now, his presence towering. "Her happiness, her success—all of it was bought with the promise of losing you."
Daniel felt rage bubbling inside him. "She didn't know that when she agreed."
"Intentions matter little," Elias said, his voice cold. "A deal is a deal."
The Warning
As Elias turned to leave, Daniel blocked his path. "I won't let you take me—or her."
Elias smirked. "Brave words, but bravery won't save you. The watchers always collect."
"Then tell them to come for me," Daniel said, his voice steady. "Leave her out of it."
Elias paused, his expression unreadable. "Interesting. A self-sacrificing fool. Perhaps there's more to you than I thought."
Before Daniel could respond, Elias vanished, the room plunging into darkness.
Daniel left the estate, his mind racing. He'd learned more about Elias and his connection to Elena's past, but the danger had only grown. The watchers weren't just looming threats—they were active predators.
When he returned home, Elena was waiting for him, her face pale with worry.
"What happened?" she asked.
Daniel pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly. "We're in deeper than I thought," he said. "But I'm not giving up."
Elena's voice trembled as she whispered, "Neither am I."
