Chapter 21 - Chapter 21

Shadows in the Bungalow

The group gathered in the bungalow's living room, the tension so thick it was hard to breathe. Lara lay motionless on the couch, her face pale and her breathing faint. Elias sat beside her, his hand resting protectively over hers, his sharp gray eyes darting to the journal that pulsed faintly on the table.

"We need to focus on her recovery," Elias said, his voice firm but strained. "She hit her head hard. If she doesn't wake up soon—"

"She will," Margot interrupted, pacing by the window. "But if the City knows we're onto the architect, it won't stop coming."

Becca sat cross-legged on the floor, her sketchpad trembling in her hands. "We should have never gone out there," she whispered. "We brought this on ourselves."

Jack slammed his crowbar onto the table, making everyone flinch. "Blaming ourselves won't help. We need to figure out what to do next."

Before anyone could respond, a low hum filled the air, growing louder until the walls of the bungalow seemed to vibrate.

Margot's head snapped toward the boarded window. "They're here."

The hum escalated into a roar as the lights in the bungalow flickered and died. Shadows began to seep in through the cracks in the walls, their jagged forms twisting unnaturally.

"Get ready!" Margot shouted, raising her knife.

Caleb grabbed a hammer, standing protectively in front of Maddy and the teenagers. Becca scrambled back, clutching her sketchpad as tears streamed down her face.

The shadows surged forward, their hollow eyes glowing faintly as they attacked.

Elias stood, his body a wall of determination between Lara and the approaching creatures. "You're not taking her," he growled, grabbing a broken chair leg to use as a makeshift weapon.

Jack swung his crowbar, smashing one of the shadows as it lunged toward Becca. "We've got to hold them off!"

One of the teenagers, a boy named Nate, stood frozen in the corner, his eyes wide with terror as a shadow slithered toward him.

"Move, kid!" Caleb yelled, but Nate seemed rooted to the spot.

The shadow struck, its jagged limb slicing across Nate's chest. He let out a strangled cry, collapsing to the floor as blood pooled beneath him.

Maddy screamed, rushing toward him, but Caleb held her back. "No! It's too late!"

The shadows swarmed Nate's lifeless body, their forms writhing as they absorbed him into their dark mass. His face twisted into a silent scream before disappearing entirely.

Becca sobbed, her sketchpad falling from her hands. "We have to get out of here!"

Elias's face twisted with rage as he swung the chair leg with all his strength, smashing another shadow to pieces. "We're not running!" he shouted. "Not without her!"

Margot joined him, her knife flashing as she fought back the creatures. "We're outnumbered, Elias! We can't win this!"

"We're not leaving her!" Elias yelled, his voice breaking.

Jack grabbed Becca and pushed her toward the back of the room. "Go! Get to the safe room!"

Maddy and Caleb followed, herding the remaining teenagers into the reinforced pantry they had turned into a makeshift shelter.

As the shadows closed in, Margot grabbed Elias by the arm. "We can't protect her if we're dead. Move!"

Elias hesitated, his gaze darting to Lara's still form. Her face was serene, almost peaceful, despite the chaos around her.

"I'll be back," he whispered, his hand brushing her cheek.

Margot pulled him away, and they retreated to the safe room just as the shadows began to overwhelm the living room. Jack slammed the door shut, bolting it with a heavy metal bar.

The group sat in the dimly lit pantry, their faces pale and drawn. Becca clutched her knees to her chest, her eyes red and swollen. Caleb sat beside Maddy, his arm around her trembling shoulders.

"We lost Nate," Caleb said quietly, his voice heavy with guilt.

"We'll lose everyone if we don't figure this out," Margot said, her tone sharp but laced with exhaustion.

Elias sat against the wall, his head in his hands. The image of Lara lying unconscious on the couch burned into his mind.

"She's still out there," he said hoarsely. "And we left her."

"We didn't have a choice," Margot said. "The shadows would've killed us all."

"She's not dead," Elias said, his voice cold and firm. "And I'm not letting her die."

As the group sat in silence, the journal in Lara's bag began to glow faintly. The words scrawled themselves across the pages, casting an eerie light on the walls:

"The heart demands sacrifice. The anchor will not yield. Return to the mark."

Margot read the words aloud, her expression grim. "The City wants us to go back. It's daring us to try again."

"Then we go back," Elias said, standing abruptly. "But this time, we don't just fight. We win."
