Chapter 7 - The Truth about János

Aurora had never imagined that the truth about János would be more cruel than the threats from his supposed captors. She had prepared herself for anything, except discovering that the man she had loved, fought for, risked her life for, was in fact playing a deceitful game. The scam he had tried to pull off not only destroyed the trust she had in him, but also shattered everything she had once believed to be true.

When she last looked into János's eyes, there was a distance she couldn't explain. He seemed farther away than ever, as though an invisible curtain had drawn itself between them. The fear that he might actually be in real danger, the danger he had spoken of so often, now seemed irrelevant. Something was wrong, but she couldn't pinpoint what it was. And that uncertainty began to gnaw at her trust in everything they had built.

It was then that Aurora began receiving mysterious messages, some of which seemed to come from reliable sources, others just whispered suggestions from old acquaintances of János. At first, Aurora refused to believe it. She trusted him. But the pieces slowly began to fall into place until a dark truth was revealed, painful and impossible to ignore.

She received a letter, with no return address, no seal, but the handwriting was unmistakable. The message read: "He is not in danger. He is manipulating you. Be careful, Aurora. He does not want your good. He just wants your money."

Aurora was paralysed. The scam was being revealed before her eyes, but she refused to believe it. It was impossible that everything she had lived through was a lie. She needed proof. Something irrefutable, something beyond words.

Determined to help her, Gabriel began to investigate further. For days, he scoured János's past, visited old contacts, and gathered information from discreet sources. Aurora remained apart, preferring not to know until Gabriel had something concrete. But when he finally returned with the information she feared, it was like a sharp blade slicing through her hopes.

János had never been in danger. He had never been. Everything he had said had been a fabrication, a clever ruse to manipulate her. He had become involved with a criminal network, and the story of his kidnapping was nothing more than an invention. What he wanted from Aurora wasn't just the ransom; he wanted her trust, her resources. And what had he done to get it? Played on her emotions, manipulated her insecurities, and made promises he had never intended to keep.

The pain was overwhelming. Aurora collapsed into a chair, pale-faced, her stomach twisting. Why hadn't she seen it? Why hadn't she noticed the obvious signs everyone else seemed to have picked up on? But there was one thing still lingering in her mind: one last question. Why had he done this? What had he wanted, after all?

That night, she withdrew to her chambers, unable to cope with the frustration and heartbreak that consumed her. Everything she had believed in was disintegrating before her eyes. But what she didn't know was that the worst was yet to come.

Hours later, Gabriel appeared again, his face heavy with urgency. He brought even worse news: János had fled. After discovering that Aurora was searching for answers, he had vanished without a trace, taking with him documents and other items he had gathered for his scheme. Now, he was on the move, and no one knew where he was.

Aurora didn't hesitate. She immediately ordered a search to be organised. It was too late to wait for him to surrender. She knew time was precious, and the longer he was free, the more damage he would cause. She didn't just want to find him; she wanted justice. The pain and anger had turned into something far more dangerous: an unwavering determination.

The search lasted for days, but finally, a lead took Gabriel and his men to a small town, where János had hidden himself. He knew she would come, and had prepared to disappear once more, but now Aurora was in control. She wouldn't let him escape again.

The town where he was hiding wasn't large, but its isolation made it the perfect place for someone to blend in. Like a cold, impenetrable metal prison, the empty streets and barren landscape seemed to reflect János's own coldness. Aurora shuddered as she observed the old buildings and dark alleyways, knowing that he could be anywhere.

With Gabriel's help, and two other trusted men, she began combing the streets. They split up, encircling the town, but soon she found herself in a narrow alley, her footsteps echoing off the stone walls. The sound of a sudden movement made her stop. She turned the corner, her hand on her dagger, ready for whatever would emerge. As she neared an old abandoned house, a shadow flitted across the window.

She entered without hesitation. The smell of aged wood and dust engulfed her as she moved forward. Gabriel and the others were close behind, ready to act, but it was Aurora who now led the charge. She wanted the truth, wanted to face him face-to-face. When she stepped into one of the rooms, there he was, looking at her with a smile she knew all too well, but one that now seemed cruel and empty.

"János," she said, her voice hard. "It's time to stop with the lies."

He looked at her, but didn't seem surprised. Instead, he merely took a step back, with disturbing calm. "Aurora, you don't understand. There's always been something bigger at play. And you were just a pawn in that game."

Aurora didn't say another word. Her anger was stronger than words. She gestured for the men who accompanied her. "Arrest him!" she said firmly, without hesitation.

When the men moved forward, János tried to resist, but he was no match for them. He was quickly subdued and handcuffed. Aurora watched the scene with a mix of relief and pain. He was no longer the man she had loved, the man she had risked everything for. He was just a cruel, lying figure, now facing the consequences of his actions.

"Take him away," Aurora said, her voice relentless. "And I never want to see him again."

János made no further attempt to fight. His gaze was filled with contempt, but he knew the battle was lost. As he was taken away, Aurora turned away, her body tired and her mind troubled. She had faced betrayal head-on, but in the end, she had prevailed. Not without pain, not without suffering, but with a renewed strength.

She had lost the man she had loved, but in the process, she had gained something even more precious: confidence in herself. And that, at least, no one could take from her.
