Riegan Reign was seated on a plush coach in a well air-conditioned and spacious office room. However, she was not the least bit comfortable. Her eyes were focused on the laptop before her and she could not shake off the ominous feeling.
Maverick King stood behind Riegan and watched as she gingerly clicked open a video file. The file maximized, filling the whole screen. At first, they weren't sure what they were watching as it was all so dark. Then, a man came on with his back facing the screen. He walked further away from the camera. Maverick frowned. In the next frame, the camera position shifted and suddenly they had a closer view of his destination. Immediately Maverick walked away and tried to warn Riegan.
"Riegan," he called somberly, hoping to gain her attention. However, he was drowned out by voices from the video. First, there was only a woman's voice then a man's voice joined in. He couldn't catch the words, instead he watched as Riegan slowly tensed up.
"Noooooo!!!!!!" she screamed and shot to her feet.
The ear-piercing scream was filled with such primal anguish and rage that it vibrated through the room. Both Maverick and Rook, her assistant, who stood further away closer to the door were shocked to their core. They had never seen Riegan ever lose her composure to this extent.
"Where is my sister?" Riegan shouted, looking at Rook. "Why isn't she found yet?"
"Madam, we're still searching," Rook replied. The fact that he was able to keep his voice steady despite feeling his stomach quiver anxiously was a sign of his professional capability.
Sensing something truly dire, Maverick approached Riegan. "Riegan."
"No!" she snapped as she slammed shut the laptop.
"Riis, what's wrong?" Maverick stopped approaching and stood where he was, facing Riegan. "Come on, talk to me." He carefully kept his voice low as though he was afraid to push her over the edge.
"Maverick," Riegan called him but said nothing else. Her eyes were on him but her gaze seemed far away.
Maverick waited patiently as she contemplated.
Riegan was not even gone for a whole day. Shortly after her return this evening, her sister had left her several missed calls. At first, she thought Megan was butt-dialing her because the call would drop after just one or two rings. After the third call, Riegan started getting annoyed. She tried to answer the call but it cut off. When she tried to call back repeatedly, the call would not connect. That's when she started getting worried.
Shortly after Riegan had set Rook on the task of finding Megan, she received an email from an unknown source. The subject was, 'You might want to see this' and it contained nothing but a video file. Usually, she would have deleted such a fishy-looking email, except she also received a message from an unknown number. It said: 'You might want to see the video.'
Though a little suspicious, she hadn't thought much of it when she clicked on the video. She never expected to become a helpless spectator to her sister's assault! She clenched her hands into fists. Riegan exhaled deeply, reigning in her anger. Her entire body still pulsated with suppressed emotions. They dare!
"It's Megan," she said. It was all Maverick needed to know. After all, he had seen the start of that video and could put together the pieces.
"Who?" he asked, the anger in his voice was barely contained.
Maverick and Riegan grew up together so he was very familiar with Riegan's elder sister, Megan. There were so many questions he wanted to ask that his mind was a mess. Most importantly he wanted to know who, who did he have to look for. The other questions can wait after Maverick had turned the insides of the bastard inside out.
Riegan shook her head. She observed Rook answer a call just outside the door and watched him as she spoke to Maverick.
"Trace the email, follow it until you find out who sent it." Riegan knew it wouldn't be easy to trace the video but she would find the person behind this even if she had to burn everything in her path to do it. "Also, make sure the video doesn't exist anywhere but on my file."
Maverick was a little startled. "You want to keep a copy of the video?"
She only nodded. "Make sure no one else sees the video," she said shortly.
"Madam," Rook approached the both of them. They sensed an urgency in his voice.
"Ms Megan has been found."
"Where?" Riegan asked, already striding towards the door.
"General Hospital," Rook replied, following her.
"Maverick, I'll leave things here to you," she stated without looking back.
Once Riegan was out of his sight, Maverick made his way to her laptop. Hearing the crunch of glass beneath his shoes, he looked down. Only then did he notice the remnants of shattered glass and a trail of blood.
Realizing that earlier Riegan must have crushed the crystal glass in her hand and shattered it, Maverick exhaled deeply. He had wanted to keep things under wraps, at least until Riegan had further directions. However, it seemed he needed some aid if he wanted to make sure she did not destroy herself in her rage.
At the basement of the building, Riegan handed her personal phone over to Rook before she got into the backseat of the car. She waited until Rook settled into the driver's seat before speaking.
"There's a message from an unknown number. I want to know who it came from."
"Yes ma'am." Rook acknowledged before he started the car.
Riegan laid her head back on the seat and looked out the window, watching the scenery flash by but not really seeing anything. Riegan's personal phone number was something she guarded closely. No one she did not know personally had her number. Or at least they should not have it. Then was it the work of someone she knew? Seeing that she was the one who received the video and the message, was she the real target and her sister got caught in the middle?
No matter which way she thought, she just could not come up with a single person who would want to harm her or her sister. She had to see Megan first.
