Dante's experience from having a head-to-head battle with the Pokemons in the dungeon made him calm even in the face of this desperate situation.
In the dungeon, Dante and Pikachu often have to battle more than 3 Pokemons at a time. Attacks can come from any direction. Dante must not only be constantly aware of his surroundings, he also needs to command Pikachu in case they have to deviate from the established tactics.
Through this, Dante gained the habit of constantly thinking the best possible moves during a battle. From the beginning when Scyther used Agility instead of Sword Dance, Dante already felt that something was wrong.
Thinking about it from Luis' perspective, he doesn't know whether Pikachu has the Static Ability, or possesses any high base power Electric type moves.
By using Agility and attacking from a distance, he negates the chance of Scyther being paralyzed by Pikachus' Ability, nor risk his Pokemon from being hit by a super effective Electric move in close range.
With Scyther keeping distance and his Speed boosted by Agility, he will be able to dodge any Electric type moves that suddenly come his way.
Pikachu's only hope now is to use the wide, indiscriminate Electric type Attack Discharge to hit Scyther. Sadly, Pikachu can only learn Discharge after it has developed enough of its potential.
When Luis saw Pikachu not being able to do anything, he knew his vision was correct. This Pikachu doesn't know any wide-ranged moves. Then this game is over. As long as Scyther uses another Bug Buzz, he will win.
"Pikachu, Grass Knot, to your right!"
Dante kept watching Scyther's repeated movement and then suddenly shouted. Pikachu was also ready for his command. He instantly released Grass Knot in the direction Dante pointed without any hesitation.
The grass was formed into a knot in the direction of Scyther's path. Scyther, who was running quickly around Pikachu, suddenly stumbled. Dante especially timed his command so Scyther won't have much time to react.
"Thunder Wave!"
Seizing this opportunity, Dante hadn't even finished his words and Pikachu, who had somewhat of a tacit understanding with Dante, already released it.
Thunder Wave in the main Pokemon games is an attack that can't be dodged and will surely paralyze the target. Of course, in this world, it cannot really become an unavoidable attack.
Instead, it forms a very fast electric current that can paralyze a target as long as the difference in strength is not that huge.
Clearly, the difference in strength between Pikachu and Scyther is not huge. Scyther, who wasn't able to dodge the attack due to being tripped, became paralyzed.
Sticking to the plan formulated before the battle, as soon as Scyther fell into paralysis, Pikachu immediately attacked with Thunder Shock.
It was only at that moment that Luis reacted. One second he was very sure of winning and was already thinking about what to do after the battle, and then suddenly, he was about to lose.
Scyther was about to be hit by the second Thunder Shock when he shouted.
"Scyther! Use Roost!"
Dante was impressed after hearing Luis' command. Although he was unprepared, he still gave the correct command.
Roost is a Flying type move in which the Pokemon lands on the ground, using all its Flying type energy to concentrate on recovery, thereby temporarily losing its Flying type.
By using Roost, Scyther would remove its Flying type, making Electric type moves only have a normal effect on him. In addition, he can also recover while waiting for the paralysis to wear off.
Very unfortunately, his command was still a bit slow. After being hit by the first Thunder Shock and hearing no command from his trainer, Scyther used Protect on his own to block the second wave of attack.
Protect is a Normal type status move which instantaneously bursts out the energy in the body to form a temporary barrier. After using it, the Pokemon will fall into a brief period of weakness while the body is recovering the used energy.
Because it uses up a lot of energy, the Pokemon using Protect can block almost any moves as long as the difference in strength is not too great. Therefore, this move is mostly used to block any powerful moves that take a while to prepare, not weak moves that can be repeatedly spammed.
After that, with Scyther still a bit weak from using Protect, coupled with the Paralysis, Scyther wasn't able to react before he was hit by the third Thunder Shock.
"Scyther…!" (I won't…!)
With a last cry, Scyther fell to the ground. Drone Rotom from the side took a look and then raised the flag in Dante's direction.
"Scyther is unable to battle, Pikachu wins! Trainer Luis has no more available Pokemon, Trainer Dante wins the match!"
A clapping sound was suddenly played from the speakers throughout the room. Dante walked up to Pikachu and picked him up.
"Good job, partner. It looks like our first Trainer battle was a success."
"Pika, pi~" (Of course! Ha, ha, we're gonna be the strongest after all).
Listening to Pikachu's words and looking at his tired face, Dante also responded with a smile.
"Yeah, we're gonna be the strongest! Rest well partner, we're gonna have a feast later."
On the other side, Luis was still blankly staring at the battlefield, Rotom's words constantly echoing in his mind.
"I…lost?"
"Luis, you okay? That was a great match! Very worthy of the first battle in our Pokemon Trainer Career."
Dante looked at the stunned young man in front of him and threw back his own words. And while his words were mostly to get back from what the other party said earlier, the part about it being a great match was true.
In this battle, the winner could be anyone. While Scyther's stats were stronger than Pikachu, it wasn't insurmountable.
According to Dante's estimate, Scyther's Speed should be in the 40s, the Sp. Def in the 25s, and the Special Attack about 20. Meanwhile, Pikachu's stats are in the range of 23-25.
Scyther's moveset was also more varied than Pikachu. Dante even guessed that Luis already has all the move discs that Scyther can learn.
The main reason why Dante was able to win this battle was mostly due to type advantage, luck, and Luis and Scyther's inexperience.
Pikachu, being an Electric type, gains a boost in power by using Electric type moves which can already deal double the damage to the Flying type Scyther.
Dante was also lucky that Luis' did not just let Scyther directly attack Pikachu.
If Scyther really learned all possible moves, then he would have surely learned either Lunge or X-Scissor, Scyther's most powerful Bug type Physical move. Dante wasn't sure whether Pikachu could take one attack from that, especially since Scyther's Attack stat should most likely exceed 30.
Luckily, Luis took on a more cautious approach. Even until the end, he had no intention of going near Pikachu, whose movepool he didn't know, and just wanted to kite him to death using Scyther's faster Speed.
It was only because of Dante's vision that Pikachu seized the only chance to win in that situation.
