Chapter 28 - Power Surges

The night air was thick with tension, an electric charge crackling in the atmosphere. Sera could feel it in her bones, the pull of something ancient and dark, stirring just beneath the surface. It was a feeling she couldn't ignore, a weight pressing down on her chest as though the world itself was holding its breath, waiting.

Aidan stood a few feet away, his back straight, his senses alert. His eyes, glowing faintly, scanned the forest around them with razor-sharp precision. But his gaze kept flicking back to Sera, a mix of concern and something deeper—something unspoken—hanging in the air between them.

"Are you alright?" Aidan's voice was soft but urgent. His usual confident tone was laced with a rare uncertainty, and it sent a shiver through her.

Sera swallowed hard, fighting the turmoil inside her. She wasn't sure if it was the vampire's words that had shaken her or the strange surge of power still coursing through her veins. The feeling was stronger than before, almost impossible to ignore. It felt like fire, a heat radiating from deep within her, and yet, there was an unmistakable darkness to it.

"I'm... not sure," she admitted, her voice shaky despite her best efforts to sound calm. "What was he talking about? What did he mean when he said I was the key?"

Aidan's jaw clenched, and he took a step closer, but there was a hesitance in his movements, as though he were unsure of how much to tell her. "I don't know," he murmured, his eyes narrowing. "But I think we're running out of time. Whatever he was after, I have a feeling it has something to do with your power."

Sera looked at him, trying to read his expression. There was something in his eyes, something guarded, but it wasn't just worry. There was fear—fear of her, fear of what was happening to her, or perhaps, what she was becoming.

The vampire's words echoed in her mind: She will come to me. She will understand her power.

That was the second time someone had mentioned it. First, it was the vampire. Now, Aidan was speaking as if he, too, knew something she didn't. And that scared her.

"What do you know about my power, Aidan?" Sera demanded, her voice sharp, but her hands trembled. She took a step forward, closing the gap between them. "What aren't you telling me?"

Aidan's eyes flickered with guilt, but he remained silent for a long moment, as if weighing his next words. Finally, he exhaled heavily, his gaze dropping to the ground. "I didn't want to burden you with this. Not yet. But the truth is, your blood... it's different."

Sera's heart skipped a beat. "Different?"

"Yes," Aidan said, his voice barely above a whisper. "You were born with a gift—something rare, something powerful. It's part of why you're so... special. Your lineage goes back to something much older than the vampires. Much older than anything you've encountered."

Sera shook her head, struggling to make sense of his words. "Wait. Are you saying I'm not just a human who was turned into a vampire? That there's something else in me?"

Aidan nodded, his gaze intense. "There's more to you than just being a vampire. Your bloodline carries a power that's been dormant for centuries, a power that can change everything. The moment you were turned, that dormant power began to awaken."

Sera staggered back as if the ground beneath her feet had suddenly given way. Her mind raced, trying to digest the impossible truth. "But why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you warn me about this?"

"I didn't know until recently," Aidan admitted, his voice low. "I knew there was something special about you, something different, but I didn't realize the full extent of it. And when I saw what happened tonight, when the vampire came after you, I knew the time had come. You can't fight it anymore."

Sera was silent for a long time, the weight of his words settling deep within her. Her blood felt heavy, as though it were pulsing with an energy she couldn't control. It was as if something was awakening inside her, something both beautiful and terrifying.

"I can feel it," she whispered, her eyes wide with fear and awe. "It's in me, isn't it?"

Aidan's gaze softened, but there was no hiding the dread in his eyes. "Yes. But you have to understand, Sera—this power, it's not something you can just ignore. It's ancient. It's primal. And if you don't learn how to control it, it will consume you."

The realization hit her like a ton of bricks. This wasn't just about surviving as a vampire anymore. She wasn't just trying to fight for her humanity or her place in this world. She was fighting for control over something far more dangerous—something that could destroy her if she wasn't careful.

The air seemed to thicken with every passing second, the darkness pressing in around her. She could feel the vampire's words creeping into her thoughts, his ominous warning hanging in the back of her mind: She will embrace her power.

But the more she thought about it, the more she realized that she wasn't sure if she wanted to embrace it. She didn't know if she could.

Sera turned away from Aidan, pacing the clearing. Her breath came in shallow bursts, her mind racing as she tried to make sense of everything. There was so much she didn't understand. So much she had yet to learn.

Aidan moved to follow her, but Sera held up a hand, stopping him. "I need time, Aidan," she said, her voice shaking. "I can't process all of this right now."

"I know," Aidan said softly, his voice full of understanding. "I'll be here. Whenever you're ready."

Sera didn't look at him. She couldn't. There was too much uncertainty swirling around her, and the last thing she wanted was for him to see her fear. For the first time in her life, she felt like she was standing on the edge of something she couldn't control—a force that was beyond her understanding, a force that could either save or destroy her.

And all she could do was wait, unsure of whether she was strong enough to survive the awakening of the darkness inside her...
