Chapter 5: "Fighting the Darkness"
The creature lunged, its shadowy form moving with unnatural speed. Landon barely had time to react before it was upon them, its claws outstretched, aiming for Hope. The darkness in its eyes told Landon everything he needed to know—it wasn't just a monster; it was a manifestation of the very thing he was fighting within himself.
Before Landon could think, instinct kicked in. His hands flared with flame, the heat of his phoenix powers scorching the air around him. The fire roared to life, shooting toward the creature in a bright, blazing arc.
But as the flames surged forward, something dark surged within Landon. His chest tightened, and a rush of cold washed over him, like an invisible force pushing against the heat of the fire. He could feel the demon blood stirring within him, tugging at his control. The fire shifted—becoming erratic, wild, and dangerous. It flickered between red and black, a sickly hue creeping into the flames as the demon side tried to claim its share.
"Control it!" Hope shouted, her voice cutting through the chaos.
Landon gritted his teeth, struggling to focus. The fire was already spiraling out of control, burning hotter, more intense. It was no longer just his phoenix power at work—it was the demon inside him, its pull threatening to turn the flames into something destructive.
Hope stepped in front of him, pushing him back as she raised her own hands, summoning a barrier of light. The fire crashed against the barrier, splintering in all directions, but Hope held her ground, her expression focused and resolute. "Landon, you have to focus! Don't let it take you over!"
The creature hissed again, its twisted form shifting, and Landon snapped his gaze back to it. The monster was unfazed by the fire, its body reforming from the scorch marks. It wasn't just any supernatural creature—it was something else. Something older. Something tied to the darkness inside him.
"Get out of the way!" Landon growled, his voice laced with frustration. He wanted to stop the creature, but more than that, he needed to stop what was happening inside of him. The demon blood was tugging at him, urging him to give in, to let the darkness spread.
But the weight of Hope's presence next to him was like an anchor. She was there, standing by him, not just as his ally but as the one who believed he could control it. The pull of the demon side didn't feel as overwhelming with her there.
"Landon, you've got this," Hope said, her voice calm but filled with unwavering confidence. "Remember who you are. You're not the demon inside you. You're more than that."
Landon's heart pounded, his breathing quickening as he forced himself to focus. Hope was right. The darkness inside him didn't define him. He had the power to fight it, to use it, but he couldn't let it control him.
With a sharp exhale, Landon raised his hand again. The fire returned, but this time, it was different. It was tempered by his will, the heat of the phoenix flame clashing against the cold pull of the demon blood. He pushed against the darkness, drawing on his strength and his focus. The fire intensified, but it remained under control, the flames bright and fierce as they swirled around him, forming a barrier.
The creature snarled in frustration, its yellow eyes flashing as it recoiled from the heat. But Landon wasn't done. He needed to end this before the creature could get any closer to Hope.
With a fierce yell, Landon thrust his hand forward, the fire spiraling outward in a controlled wave, engulfing the creature in an explosion of light and heat. The monster screeched, its form disintegrating into a cloud of black smoke before it finally dissipated, leaving behind only the faint smell of sulfur in the air.
Landon stood panting, the heat from his flames still radiating off him. He could feel the remnants of the darkness inside him, still tugging at his consciousness, but it was manageable now. He had regained control.
Hope was beside him in an instant, her hand resting on his arm as she looked at him with concern. "Landon, are you okay?"
Landon took a deep breath, his pulse slowing as the fire within him finally began to calm. "I think so. But I don't know what that thing was."
"That thing," Hope said, her voice strained, "was a shadow demon. It feeds off of fear and darkness. It's a manifestation of the kind of energy that the demon blood inside you thrives on. And I think we've just seen the tip of the iceberg."
Landon frowned, turning away from Hope to scan the area. "You mean it's not the only one?"
Hope shook her head. "No. There are more out there. And they're drawn to you, Landon. They sense the power inside you. The darkness."
Landon's stomach dropped. The last thing he wanted was to become a beacon for these kinds of creatures. "So, what? They're going to keep coming after me?"
"Not just you," Hope said. "They'll come after anyone who's connected to you. They'll target the people you care about."
The weight of her words hit him like a ton of bricks. It wasn't just about him anymore. It was about everyone he loved. His family. His friends. Hope. They were all at risk because of the demon blood inside him.
"You have to get it under control, Landon," Hope said, her voice gentle but urgent. "I know you can do it. You just have to keep fighting."
Landon nodded, his throat tightening. "I will. I don't want to hurt anyone."
"I know," Hope replied softly. "But you need to learn how to fight this, or it will keep getting worse. It won't stop until you face it head-on."
Landon looked up at the stars, their cold light barely piercing the darkness of the night. He had always thought of himself as someone who could control his fate, someone who could rise above whatever challenges came his way. But now, the stakes had changed. It wasn't just his life on the line. It was everyone else's too.
"I'll learn," Landon said, his voice filled with determination. "I'll fight it."
Hope smiled faintly, her hand still resting on his arm. "We'll fight it together."

Later That Night
Back at the school, Landon sat in his dorm room, staring out of the window, the weight of the events hanging over him. His body ached from the fight, but that wasn't what kept him awake. It was the uncertainty, the fear that gnawed at him.
How could he ever control something so dark? How could he stop the demon blood from consuming him?
But as he closed his eyes, he felt Hope's words echoing in his mind. You're not the demon inside you. You're more than that.
Landon wasn't sure he believed it yet. But he would try. For them. For Hope.
