Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 : A Costly Revenge

The night Kael had waited for finally arrived. The city hummed with its usual chaos, but his focus was razor-sharp. Orik was hosting a gathering at his lavish estate in the upper levels of Zareth, a stark contrast to the ruins Kael called home. Through weeks of observation and careful planning, Kael had learned the estate's vulnerabilities. Tonight, Orik's guards would be distracted by the festivities.

Kael moved like a shadow, slipping past the guards, disabling surveillance, and bypassing traps with a precision that seemed almost supernatural. He found Orik alone in his study, seated in a leather chair, pouring himself a drink.

"Who's there?" Orik growled, sensing the presence in the room.

Kael didn't answer. He stepped forward, letting the dim light catch the edge of the blade he had fashioned from the glowing ore of Zareth's heart. The same energy that coursed through Kael now powered his weapon.

Orik had no chance to react. Kael's blade found its mark, swift and silent. The crime lord's eyes widened in shock, and then he slumped forward, lifeless.

Kael stared at the lifeless body, expecting to feel relief, but instead, a hollow ache filled him. "This is for my mother," he whispered, before carving a single spark-shaped insignia on the wall—a symbol he thought would go unnoticed.

But he was wrong.

---

The following day, Orik's brother, Kavor, stood in the ruined study, his eyes narrowing as he studied the spark-shaped mark. Unlike his impulsive sibling, Kavor was methodical, a master manipulator. He saw an opportunity to twist the tragedy to his advantage.

"Let's see how Zareth's newest spark handles being doused," Kavor muttered, a sinister smile spreading across his face.

Within days, rumors spread like wildfire. Kael's name was dragged through the mud with fabricated allegations of heinous crimes. Anonymous witnesses came forward, claiming Kael had used his powers to assault innocent women. The accusations were baseless, but Kavor's influence ensured they were believed.

Kael found himself hunted, not just by the authorities, but by those he had once sought to protect.

In the midst of this storm, Kael found solace in Lira's arms. She refused to believe the lies, her unwavering trust a beacon in his darkest hour. One night, as they hid in a secret alcove within the city's ruins, Kael poured his heart out to her.

"I didn't think it would feel like this," he admitted, his voice breaking. "Killing Orik should've brought peace, but now I've only brought chaos."

Lira cupped his face, her eyes full of understanding. "Revenge doesn't heal wounds, Kael. It only creates new ones. But I know your heart, and I know you didn't do what they're accusing you of. We'll clear your name, together."

Kael leaned into her touch, their foreheads resting against each other. The weight of the world seemed to lift, if only for a moment. "You're the only thing keeping me sane," he whispered.

"And you're the only thing that makes me feel alive," she replied, pulling him into a kiss that silenced his doubts. Their connection was electric, as though the city itself paused to witness their love.

---

Kael knew he couldn't stay hidden forever. With Lira by his side, he began piecing together Kavor's plot, determined to expose the truth. But the deeper they dug, the more dangerous the game became. Kavor wasn't just after revenge—he wanted to break Kael entirely, to turn him into the villain the city feared.

Kael had learned one painful truth: revenge came at a cost. And now, with Lira in his life, he had more to lose than ever before.....
