Chapter 12 - Six Days In

The morning sunlight filtered through the windows of the treehouse, casting a warm glow over the wooden walls. Carter stirred in his bed, groaning softly as he tried to shield his eyes. "Six days," he muttered sleepily, his voice filled with dramatic exaggeration. "It's been six whole days since I was summoned to this world... almost a week. Am I finally getting used to this? Or is this world just determined to throw me off every day?"

Ivy, curled up at the foot of the bed, yawned dramatically, her tiny body stretching as she let out a soft chirp. Carter peeked one eye open and chuckled. "Well, good morning to you too, Ivy. Did you sleep well? Or were you dreaming about all the snacks you can't have yet?"

Ivy hopped onto Carter's chest, chirping insistently and nuzzling his face. Carter laughed, sitting up slowly. "Alright, alright, I'm up! Geez, you're worse than an alarm clock."

Dragging himself out of bed, Carter stretched, his joints popping audibly. "Another day in paradise," he muttered, then smiled as he glanced at Ivy. "Let's get some breakfast, huh?"

The two made their way to the small kitchen area, where Carter began rummaging through the ingredients they had gathered. "Okay," he said, pulling out some freshly picked herbs and a few eggs from the market. "Let's keep it simple today. Herb omelet sound good, Ivy?"

Ivy chirped enthusiastically, hopping onto the counter to watch. Carter shook his head with a grin. "You're way too invested in my cooking process. Not that I blame you—I am pretty good at this."

He cracked the eggs into a bowl, whisking them while tossing in finely chopped herbs. "A little Goldenleaf Herb for flavor, maybe some Lumina Berries on the side..." he mused aloud. "This is shaping up to be a decent breakfast."

As the omelet sizzled in the pan, Carter continued his monologue. "You know, Ivy, six days isn't a lot of time, but it feels like I've been here forever. Maybe it's because every day has been so packed with... well, everything. Meeting Aria, starting the garden, learning alchemy..."

At the mention of Aria, Carter's voice softened, and a dreamy expression crossed his face. "Speaking of Aria... she's amazing, isn't she? So smart, so beautiful... the way her eyes light up when she's explaining something. It's like she belongs to this world in a way I'll never quite understand."

Ivy chirped teasingly, snapping Carter out of his reverie. He laughed, flipping the omelet. "Alright, alright, I get it. Focus on breakfast first, daydream later."

Once the food was ready, Carter set the plates on the table and sat down, Ivy hopping onto her usual spot beside him. "Dig in, partner," he said, taking a bite. The blend of herbs and fresh ingredients was satisfying, and he couldn't help but smile. "Not bad, if I say so myself."

Ivy chirped her agreement, eagerly nibbling on her portion. Carter leaned back in his chair after finishing his meal, letting out a contented sigh. "Alright, next on the agenda: a shower, getting dressed, and then heading to the potion store."

After cleaning up, Carter headed to the small bathroom he'd built into the treehouse. As the warm water from the shower cascaded over him, he found his thoughts drifting back to Aria. "What should I even say to her?" he wondered aloud. "I mean, sure, I've got these potions to show her, but what if she's not impressed? What if she thinks I'm just some clueless newbie?"

He shook his head, rinsing off the soap. "No, Carter, you've got this. Just be yourself. Aria's always been kind and patient. She'll see how much effort I've put in."

Stepping out of the shower, Carter dried off and pulled on his clothes, adjusting the green jacket he had bought in the city. "Looking sharp," he said to his reflection, striking a playful pose. "Alright, Ivy, time to head out and see what the day has in store."

Ivy chirped happily, bounding to his side as they prepared to leave. Carter smiled, feeling a mix of anticipation and determination. "Let's make today count, partner. And who knows? Maybe I'll find a way to impress Aria after all."

Carter and Ivy stepped out of the treehouse, the morning sun casting a warm glow over the forest path. Carter adjusted his bag, carefully packed with the potions he had spent the previous day crafting. "Alright, Ivy," he said with a grin, glancing at his companion as she trotted beside him, "time to show Aria what we've been working on."

Ivy chirped in agreement, her tail flicking as she kept pace with Carter. The two walked along the familiar forest path, the crisp air filled with the rustle of leaves and the distant calls of birds. "You know," Carter began, his tone reflective, "this place still amazes me. Every time we walk through here, it feels like the forest has something new to show us."

As they continued, Carter's gaze was drawn to several animals darting between the trees. Creatures with multicolored fur, long tails, and glowing patterns moved gracefully through the underbrush. "Ivy, look at that," Carter said, pointing. "I've never seen anything like them. It's like this world just keeps throwing surprises at us."

Ivy chirped curiously, tilting her head as she watched the animals scamper away. Carter chuckled. "I wonder what they're called. Maybe we should write this stuff down—like a journal of all the unique creatures we see."

The deeper they walked into the forest, the more Carter felt a strange connection to his surroundings. He slowed his pace, eventually stopping entirely. "Hold on a second, Ivy," he said, kneeling down and placing a hand on the forest floor. "Let's try something."

Closing his eyes, Carter focused his energy. "Unique Skill: Nature's Touch," he said softly. A green light radiated from his hand, spreading outward in waves and illuminating the forest around them. The trees seemed to hum gently, and the plants swayed slightly, as if responding to his presence.

Carter opened his eyes, a look of wonder on his face. "Ivy," he said, his voice filled with excitement, "I can feel it. The forest is... alive. It's like the plants and trees are speaking to me."

Ivy chirped, hopping closer to him as Carter continued. "This is incredible," he murmured, running his fingers through the grass. "They're telling me about the soil, the water, even the animals that pass through here. It's like I'm part of it all."

He sat there for a moment, basking in the connection, before standing up with a renewed sense of purpose. "Alright, partner," he said, brushing off his hands. "That was amazing, but we've got a city to get to. Let's go show Aria what we've learned."

As they resumed their walk, Carter couldn't stop smiling. "You know, Ivy," he said, glancing down at her, "if this is just the beginning of what I can do, who knows what else is possible? Maybe I'll be able to grow entire forests someday."

Ivy chirped happily, her enthusiasm matching Carter's as they neared the edge of the forest. The towering walls of the city came into view, their imposing presence a stark contrast to the natural beauty of the forest. Carter paused for a moment, taking it all in. "There it is," he said softly. "The city. It feels different now, doesn't it? Like... I'm not just visiting anymore. I'm part of this world."

Ivy chirped in agreement, and Carter took a deep breath. "Alright," he said, his tone resolute. "Let's do this."

With that, the two continued their journey toward the city, Carter's mind buzzing with thoughts of what lay ahead and the possibilities his powers had only begun to reveal.

Carter and Ivy made their way through the city gates, the familiar hum of bustling streets welcoming them back. The lively atmosphere surrounded them—vendors shouting out their wares, children running and laughing, and townsfolk chatting animatedly as they went about their day. Ivy sat perched on Carter's shoulder, her bright eyes darting around as she took in the sights.

"Back to the city," Carter muttered to himself, smiling slightly. "Alright, Ivy, let's head straight to the potion store. We've got potions to show off and maybe a chance to impress Aria."

As they walked through the streets, Carter's attention was drawn to the cheerful chaos around him. Vendors called out to potential buyers, offering everything from fresh produce to shiny trinkets. Children raced past, playing games and giggling, and the aroma of freshly baked bread wafted through the air.

Suddenly, Carter's footsteps faltered. From a nearby alleyway, a high-pitched voice cried out, "Stop it! Let me go!"

Carter turned his head sharply toward the source of the sound, his heart racing. "What was that?" he muttered to himself. The voice sounded like it belonged to a child.

Ivy let out a low growl, her ears flattening against her head as she stared toward the alleyway. Carter hesitated, glancing between the bustling street ahead and the dark, narrow alley. "This could be trouble," he murmured, more to himself than Ivy. "But... it's not like I can just ignore it."

He took a cautious step toward the alley, peering into its shadowy depths. Two large men loomed over a small, frightened girl dressed in dirty clothes. She was backed against the wall, her wide, tear-filled eyes darting between her aggressors.

"Come on, little girl," one of the men said with a sneer. "You'll fetch us a good price. Be a good kid and don't make this harder than it has to be."

"Yeah," the other man added, his voice gruff. "You'll be worth a lot of money as a slave."

The girl whimpered, clutching her arms tightly around herself as she shook her head. "No! Please, just let me go!"

Carter clenched his fists, his jaw tightening as anger bubbled up inside him. He glanced at Ivy, who was growling softly on his shoulder, her fur bristling. "Alright," he muttered, taking a deep breath. "I can't just walk away from this."

He stepped into the alleyway, his voice steady but firm. "Hey. What do you think you're doing?"

The two men turned to face him, their expressions darkening. "This doesn't concern you," one of them growled. "Walk away before you get hurt."

Carter ignored the threat, his gaze shifting to the terrified girl. "It's going to be okay," he said softly, his tone gentle. "I'm here to help."

Ivy bared her teeth, letting out a low snarl as she leapt down from Carter's shoulder and positioned herself protectively in front of him. Carter's hand hovered over his bag, where he kept his potions and supplies, as he tried to quickly think of a plan.

"This is your last warning," the other man said, stepping forward menacingly. "Leave, or you'll regret it."

Carter didn't move, his eyes narrowing. "I'm not going anywhere," he said firmly. "Let the girl go."
