Chapter 31 - Arriving at the Caravan

Max and the twins approached the merchant caravan, the morning sun casting a warm glow over the wagons lined up along the road. The bustling activity of merchants loading goods and preparing for the journey slowed as the trio came into view. Curious glances were cast their way, and soon, a man broke away from the group and walked toward them.

The man, likely the caravan leader, was a stout figure with a weathered face and a no-nonsense demeanor. He adjusted his wide-brimmed hat as he stopped a few feet in front of Max and the twins, his sharp eyes scanning them.

"You must be the adventurers from the guild," the man said, his tone brisk but not unfriendly. "I'm Jorik, the leader of this caravan. So, you're here to keep us safe, huh?"

Max stepped forward, offering a confident smile. "That's right. I'm Max, and these are my teammates, Seria and Lira. We're here to make sure your goods and people get to the city safely."

Jorik nodded, his gaze shifting to the twins. "Good. Bandits have been getting bolder lately, especially with a haul like this. You'll need to stay sharp. We've got supplies and valuables that are prime targets for trouble."

"Trouble's what we're good at handling," Lira said with a smirk, her crimson eyes gleaming. "You can count on us."

Seria offered a calm smile, her green eyes steady. "We've reviewed the mission details and prepared accordingly. We'll do everything we can to ensure a smooth journey."

Jorik's expression softened slightly, though his stern demeanor remained. "I hope so. We've got a long road ahead, and the cargo we're carrying is worth more than a few gold pieces. If something happens, it could ruin us."

Max nodded, his voice steady. "Nothing will happen. We've got this."

As they spoke, a tall woman with braided hair and a stern expression approached. She carried a clipboard and glanced at Max and the twins before addressing Jorik. "Boss, the wagons are loaded, and the drivers are ready. Just waiting on your word."

"Thanks, Marta," Jorik replied. "These are the adventurers the guild sent to escort us. They'll be traveling with us for protection."

Marta nodded, her sharp eyes assessing Max and the twins. "You're not just muscle, right? You've got experience?"

"Plenty," Max replied confidently. "We just finished a rescue mission yesterday. This… will be a walk in the park."

"Let's hope you're right," Marta said, her tone brisk. She turned to Seria and Lira. "And you two? What's your specialty?"

"Strategy and support," Seria replied smoothly. "I focus on planning and ensuring everyone's on the same page."

"And I'm the muscle," Lira said with a grin, twirling one of her daggers. "You'll want me on the frontlines if things get messy."

Marta raised an eyebrow but nodded approvingly. "Alright. I'll trust Jorik's judgment. Just don't let your guard down. The road ahead is long."

As Marta walked away to oversee the final preparations, Max turned to the twins, his expression light. "She's cheerful," he quipped, earning a laugh from Lira.

"She's not wrong, though," Seria said, her tone thoughtful. "We need to be vigilant. Caravans like this are prime targets."

Lira smirked, nudging Max. "You hear that, boyfriend? No slacking off."

"Hey, I'm always on my game," Max replied with a grin. "You two just make sure to keep up."

Their banter was interrupted by a younger merchant who approached them hesitantly. "Um, excuse me," he said, his voice nervous. "Are you really adventurers? Like, proper ones?"

Max chuckled, crouching slightly to meet the merchant's gaze. "That's right. Don't worry. We've got this covered."

The merchant nodded, relief washing over his face. "Thank you. We've had some close calls lately. Knowing you're here… it means a lot."

Seria placed a reassuring hand on the man's shoulder. "We'll make sure you all get to your destination safely. You have our word."

As the final preparations were completed, the caravan began to move. Max and the twins positioned themselves strategically, keeping a close eye on their surroundings.

"Alright, team," Max said, his voice steady. "Let's make this mission a success. Stay sharp, and let's keep everyone safe."

Seria and Lira nodded, their determination evident as the wagons rolled forward. The journey had just begun, but their teamwork and camaraderie made them feel ready for whatever lay ahead.

Twenty minutes into the journey, Max and the twins strolled along the caravan, keeping a watchful eye on the wagons while chatting among themselves. The morning air was crisp, and the sound of wheels creaking and horses trotting provided a steady backdrop to their conversation.

"You know," Lira began with a smirk, glancing at Max, "you're awfully relaxed for someone on their second mission. Shouldn't you be a little more nervous?"

Max chuckled, shoving his hands into his pockets. "Nervous? Nah. I've got two amazing girlfriends watching my back. What's there to worry about?"

Seria's cheeks turned faintly pink, but she smiled softly. "We're a team, Max. As long as we stick together, we'll be fine."

Lira grinned, nudging Max playfully. "Yeah, but if anything goes wrong, we're blaming you."

Max laughed, shaking his head. "Fair enough. Just don't forget who's been saving who lately."

"Oh, please," Lira quipped, rolling her eyes. "You've gotten lucky, that's all. Let's see how you handle yourself if the bandits actually show up."

Seria chuckled, her green eyes glinting with amusement. "Don't worry, Lira. I'll make sure he doesn't do anything reckless."

"Hey, I'm standing right here," Max said with a mock pout, earning another round of laughter from the twins.

Meanwhile, near the front of the caravan, Marta and Jorik walked side by side, their voices low as they discussed the journey ahead.

"The road should be clear for the next few miles," Jorik said, his tone measured. "But once we hit the forest, that's where things could get tricky. Bandits love setting up ambushes there."

Marta nodded, her sharp eyes scanning the horizon. "Agreed. I've already briefed the drivers to stay close together and keep an eye out for anything suspicious." She paused, glancing back toward Max and the twins. "What do you think about our adventurers?"

Jorik shrugged, his expression neutral. "They seem capable enough. The guild usually knows what they're doing when they send people out. Still, second mission for the guy, right? He might need a bit more seasoning."

Marta smirked faintly. "Maybe. But I've been watching them. They've got good chemistry. The twins keep him grounded, and he's got enough confidence to make bold decisions without hesitating. That kind of balance is rare."

"Hmph. Confidence is one thing. Let's see how they handle pressure," Jorik said, crossing his arms. "I just hope they're ready if things go south."

Marta's gaze softened slightly as she watched the trio laugh together. "They'll be fine," she said quietly. "There's something about them. I think we're in good hands."

Jorik raised an eyebrow but didn't argue. Instead, he turned his focus back to the road ahead. "Well, let's hope you're right."

---

As Max, Seria, and Lira continued their patrol, their laughter and conversation flowed naturally, a mix of lighthearted teasing and strategic planning for what might lie ahead. The bond between them was evident, and even as they joked, their focus on the mission never wavered.

The caravan moved steadily through the dense forest, the canopy above filtering sunlight into soft patches of light and shadow. Max walked slightly ahead of the twins, his golden eyes scanning the surroundings while Seria and Lira chatted behind him, their voices light and filled with casual conversation.

"This forest is beautiful," Seria said, her green eyes glancing at the towering trees. "It's so peaceful."

"Too peaceful," Lira replied, twirling one of her daggers. "I can't help but feel like something's watching us."

Max, listening silently, suddenly stopped in his tracks. Raising his hand, he activated one of his skills.

"Skill: Nature's Whisper," he murmured. The trees rustled, and the wind shifted, brushing past him as if carrying a message. His eyes widened slightly as he felt a rush of adrenaline surge through his body.

"Max?" Seria asked, her voice laced with concern as she noticed his sudden halt. "What's wrong?"

Lira's crimson eyes narrowed as she stepped closer to him. "Hey, talk to us. What's going on?"

Max turned to them, his smile widening, his excitement barely contained. "It's the King of the Forest," he said, his voice filled with awe. "He's coming. And I'm going to capture him. I'll tame him."

The twins exchanged a glance, understanding immediately what he meant. But before they could respond, the caravan leader, Jorik, and Marta approached, their expressions wary.

"What's the holdup?" Jorik asked, his tone sharp but curious. "Why are we stopping?"

"Something's coming," Max explained, his tone calm but firm. "Something big. The King of the Forest."

Marta's brow furrowed as she crossed her arms. "The King of the Forest? You mean that creature from the old stories? Are you sure about this?"

"Positive," Max replied, his golden eyes glinting with determination. "And I'm going to tame him."

The other members of the caravan began murmuring among themselves, their voices tinged with confusion and fear.

"Tame him?" one merchant whispered. "Is he serious?"

"What even is the King of the Forest?" another asked, his tone trembling.

Before anyone could voice further concerns, a deafening roar echoed through the forest, shaking the ground beneath their feet. Birds scattered from the treetops, and the caravan came to a halt, the horses neighing nervously.

"That doesn't sound good," Jorik muttered, gripping his staff tightly.

Max's grin widened. "It's fine. I've got this." He raised his hand. "Let's go, Fang!"

In a flash of light, Fang materialized beside him, his massive serpent-like body coiling protectively around Max. The merchants gasped, some stepping back in fear.

"What is that thing?" one of them exclaimed, his eyes wide.

"That's Fang," Max said casually, petting the Bog Serpent's head. "He's going to help me with this."

The twins moved up to the front of the caravan, standing beside Max and Fang.

"Are you sure about this?" Seria asked, her voice calm but tinged with concern.

"Absolutely," Max replied confidently. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

Lira smirked, drawing her daggers. "Well, we're not letting you do this alone. Whatever this King of the Forest is, we've got your back."

Max glanced at both of them, his smile softening. "Thanks, you two. Let's do this together."

Another roar echoed through the forest, louder and closer this time. The trees ahead began to shake, and the ground rumbled beneath their feet. Max, Fang, and the twins stood at the ready, their expressions filled with determination as they prepared to face the King of the Forest.
