Chapter 35 - Chapter 35: The Living Breath of Wood

Li Zhen stood on the radiant bridge of light, gazing ahead at the verdant expanse that was the Island of Wood. The entire island seemed alive, pulsating with vitality. Towering trees formed a dense canopy, their leaves shimmering as if coated in liquid emerald. Vines curled and stretched like living serpents, and the air was thick with the scent of fresh earth and blooming flowers. A soft, rhythmic hum filled the space, the heartbeat of the forest itself.

He stepped forward, his boots crunching against the mossy bridge that led into the heart of the island. The moment his foot touched the ground, he felt a surge of life, as if the essence of wood was greeting him. Unlike the unwavering strength of the Island of Earth or the fiery challenge of the Island of Fire, the Island of Wood radiated an energy that was nurturing yet unpredictable.

Before Li Zhen could take another step, a voice rang out, melodic and soothing, yet carrying an undeniable authority.

"Welcome, traveler," it said.

From the largest tree at the island's center, a figure emerged. She was tall and ethereal, her skin the color of bark and her hair flowing like cascading vines. Her eyes were vibrant green, glowing with the wisdom of countless centuries.

"I am the Keeper of Wood," she said, her voice echoing like wind rustling through the leaves. "To master the essence of wood, you must prove that you can nurture life, adapt to its growth, and wield its power without succumbing to chaos. Are you prepared for the trial?"

Li Zhen nodded, his gaze steady. "I am ready."

The Keeper smiled faintly. "Very well. Let the trial begin."

Trial of Growth

With a wave of her hand, the Keeper conjured a small seed that hovered before Li Zhen. It glowed faintly with green light, radiating pure vitality.

"This is the Seed of Beginnings," she said. "Your task is to nurture it and guide its growth. But be warned—growth is not a simple path. It requires balance, patience, and understanding."

As she spoke, the ground before Li Zhen shifted, forming a small patch of fertile soil. Without hesitation, he planted the seed. The moment it touched the earth, roots began to sprout, and a delicate sapling emerged.

"Impressive," the Keeper remarked. "But this is only the beginning."

Suddenly, dark clouds rolled across the sky, and a torrential rain began to pour. The delicate sapling trembled under the onslaught of water. Li Zhen shielded it with his hands, channeling his spiritual energy into the soil to keep it from being washed away.

When the rain stopped, the sun blazed fiercely, its heat scorching the ground. The sapling began to wilt under the relentless rays. Li Zhen used his spiritual power to draw moisture from the earth, forming a protective barrier around the sapling.

The weather continued to shift unpredictably—strong winds, sudden frosts, and even swarms of insects that sought to devour the young plant. Each time, Li Zhen adapted, using his understanding of spiritual energy to create solutions. He reinforced the roots against the wind, warmed the soil against the frost, and summoned gentle flames to drive away the insects without harming the sapling.

As the trials progressed, the sapling grew stronger, its trunk thickening and its branches spreading wide. By the end of the trial, it had become a towering tree, its leaves shimmering with an inner light.

The Keeper of Wood stepped forward, her eyes filled with approval. "You have shown patience, creativity, and care. You understand that growth is a process, not an outcome. The first trial is complete."

Trial of Balance

For the second trial, the Keeper waved her hand, and the island transformed. Trees, vines, and flowers sprang to life, creating a dense and vibrant forest. But as the forest grew, the Keeper's expression turned somber.

"Growth without balance leads to chaos," she said. "Your task is to restore harmony to this overgrown forest."

Li Zhen looked around, noting the tangled vines choking the life out of nearby trees and the dense canopy blocking sunlight from reaching the forest floor. Animals cried out, struggling to find food in the disrupted ecosystem.

He took a deep breath and began to work. Drawing his blade, he carefully cut away the excess vines, ensuring not to harm the trees they clung to. He used his spiritual energy to guide sunlight to the forest floor, allowing smaller plants to thrive.

At one point, he encountered a pack of predatory beasts that had grown too large and aggressive due to the imbalance. Rather than killing them, Li Zhen used his spiritual power to calm them, guiding them deeper into the forest where they could find suitable prey.

Hours passed as he worked tirelessly, pruning overgrowth, healing damaged plants, and restoring the flow of spiritual energy throughout the forest. When he finished, the forest had transformed into a balanced ecosystem, vibrant and harmonious.

The Keeper of Wood nodded in approval. "You have shown that growth without balance is meaningless. The second trial is complete."

Trial of Power

For the final trial, the Keeper conjured a massive tree spirit, its form towering over the forest like a living mountain. Its eyes glowed with an intense green light, and its branches swayed menacingly.

"Life is not always gentle," the Keeper said. "Sometimes, it must fight to survive. Show me that you can wield the power of wood without losing sight of its essence."

The tree spirit roared, sending shockwaves through the forest. Li Zhen summoned his spiritual energy, reinforcing his body and preparing for battle. The spirit attacked, its massive branches sweeping down like giant clubs.

Li Zhen dodged, using the trees around him as cover. He countered by channeling the essence of wood, causing vines to sprout and entangle the spirit's limbs. But the spirit was incredibly powerful, breaking free with ease.

Realizing that brute force would not work, Li Zhen adapted his strategy. He began to target the spirit's roots, severing its connection to the earth and weakening its power. As the spirit faltered, he unleashed a final, concentrated burst of spiritual energy, striking its core.

The spirit let out a final roar before collapsing, its form dissolving into a shower of glowing leaves.

The Blessing of Wood

The Keeper of Wood stepped forward, her expression radiant. "You have proven yourself, Li Zhen. You understand the essence of wood—growth, balance, and power. You are worthy of its blessing."

She raised her hand, and a stream of green light flowed from the forest into Li Zhen. He felt a surge of vitality as the essence of wood integrated with his spiritual core, enhancing his cultivation and deepening his connection to life itself.

"You now bear the Blessing of Wood," the Keeper said. "May it guide you on your path."

The Path Ahead

As the Island of Wood faded, Li Zhen found himself back on the bridge of light. Ahead, the next island shimmered with a golden radiance, its surface resembling polished metal.

"The Island of Metal," he murmured, feeling a surge of determination.

With four elemental blessings now part of him, Li Zhen felt more confident than ever. But he knew that the path ahead would only grow more challenging.
