Chapter 16: Whispers in the Woods

The forest stretched endlessly before them, the towering trees swaying gently in the night breeze. Moonlight filtered through the dense canopy, casting fragmented shadows across the uneven ground. Adam stumbled on a root, nearly dropping his phone, but Henry caught his arm and steadied him.

"Careful," Henry muttered.

Adam exhaled, frustrated but grateful. "Thanks. This whole running-for-my-life thing isn't exactly in my skill set."

Adam chuckled softly, the tension in his chest easing slightly. Henry shot him a questioning glance but didn't comment.

After trudging through the woods for what felt like hours, they came to a small clearing. A dilapidated wooden shack stood at its center, its roof partially caved in and the windows boarded up.

Henry raised a hand to signal silence, then crept toward the shack, his rifle at the ready. Adam stayed a few steps behind, clutching his phone like a lifeline.

The door creaked loudly as Henry pushed it open, revealing a dusty, cluttered interior. Rusted tools and broken furniture were scattered across the floor, and the air smelled of mildew and decay.

"This'll do for now," Henry said, lowering his rifle.

Adam grimaced. "Do for what? Contracting tetanus?"

"Yeah, 'character' is one word for it," Adam muttered, stepping cautiously inside.

As they settled in, Henry rummaged through the shack, checking for anything useful. Adam sat on an overturned crate, staring at the glowing disc in his hands.

"So," he began, "any chance you know what this thing actually does?"

Adam frowned. "So it's like a key?"

Henry returned with a dusty lantern and a box of matches. "What's the bot saying?"

"That this thing might be a key," Adam replied, holding up the disc. "But we don't know what it unlocks."

Henry lit the lantern, its dim glow casting long shadows on the walls. "Figures. Nothing's ever simple in this mess."

Adam hesitated, then asked, "Henry, how did you even get involved in all this? You don't exactly strike me as the cloak-and-dagger type."

Henry snorted. "That's a long story. Let's just say I used to be good at following orders—until I realized the people giving them weren't on the right side."

Adam shot the phone a look. "Not helping."

Henry sat down across from Adam, his expression softening. "You're in over your head, kid. But you've got guts. That counts for something."

"Yeah, well, guts won't get us out of this," Adam muttered. "We need a plan."

Adam perked up. "You do?"

Henry raised an eyebrow. "I don't like the sound of that."

"Me neither," Adam admitted. "But we're out of options."

After some deliberation, Adam laid the phone on the table so ChatGPT could project its plan in full.

"Easier said than done," Henry grumbled.

"And step three?" Adam asked.

Henry leaned back, skeptical. "You make it sound simple."

Adam smirked. "It's a start, at least."

Henry nodded reluctantly. "Fine. But we'll need to lie low for a while first. Gather intel."

Adam glanced around the shabby shack. "Lie low here?"

Henry shrugged. "It's not pretty, but it's off the grid. We'll be safe for a couple of days."

Despite everything, Adam laughed. For the first time in hours, he felt a flicker of hope.
