Chapter 16 - Breaking the Distance

Without thinking, Alex closed the distance between them, his hand gently brushing Olivia's cheek. The touch sent a shiver down her spine, and before either could second-guess their actions, their lips met. The kiss was deliberate, slow, and filled with an intensity neither had expected.

For a moment, the world around them faded. The floodlights from the field, the crisp night air—none of it mattered. It was just them, sharing a moment that felt both inevitable and impossible at the same time.

When they finally pulled back, Olivia looked at Alex with a soft smile, her cheeks flushed. "You know, you're not as predictable as I thought," she teased.

Alex smirked, his hand still lingering near her face. "And you're not as unshakable as you pretend to be."

Olivia laughed lightly, stepping back just enough to regain her composure. "This doesn't mean I'm letting you win, champ."

"Who said anything about winning?" Alex countered, his blue eyes fixed on hers. "Maybe it's just about playing the game."

Olivia shook her head, smiling. "You're impossible."

"And you love it," Alex replied, his voice soft but confident.

Before they could dive deeper into their moment, Olivia's phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen and sighed. "Mia. She's probably wondering where I am."

"Go," Alex said, stepping back but not taking his eyes off her. "I'll see you tomorrow."

"You will," Olivia said, her tone lighter now. As she turned to leave, she stopped and looked over her shoulder. "Goodnight, Alex."

"Goodnight, Olivia," he replied, watching her until she disappeared into the night.

The next morning, Olivia woke up with a strange mix of excitement and nervousness. She replayed the kiss in her mind, the way Alex's presence had felt so overwhelming yet comforting. She knew she was stepping into uncharted territory, and while it scared her, it also thrilled her.

At breakfast, Mia immediately noticed her change in demeanor.

"You're glowing," Mia said, raising an eyebrow. "What happened last night?"

"Nothing," Olivia replied, trying and failing to hide her smile.

"Yeah, sure. 'Nothing' has you smiling like that?" Mia teased, leaning closer. "Was it Alex?"

Olivia's silence was all the confirmation Mia needed.

"Oh my God, it was!" Mia exclaimed, nearly spilling her coffee. "Details. Now."

Olivia shook her head, laughing. "It's... complicated."

"Complicated is your specialty," Mia said with a grin. "But seriously, Liv, I've never seen you like this. Maybe he's good for you."

Olivia didn't respond immediately, but she knew Mia was right. Alex was different, and he made her feel things she hadn't allowed herself to feel in a long time.

Meanwhile, Alex was at the gym, pushing himself harder than usual. Marcus noticed immediately.

"Dude, you're going to hurt yourself if you keep going like that," Marcus said, grabbing the bar Alex had just finished pressing.

"I'm fine," Alex replied, wiping the sweat from his face.

"You've been acting weird ever since last night," Marcus said, sitting beside him. "Does this have to do with Olivia?"

Alex hesitated before nodding. "We kissed."

Marcus's eyes widened, a grin spreading across his face. "Finally! So, what now?"

"I don't know," Alex admitted. "It's not just a game with her. She's... different."

"Yeah, I've noticed," Marcus said, nudging Alex's shoulder. "But don't overthink it, man. Just take it one step at a time."

Later that day, Olivia and Alex crossed paths in the library. It wasn't planned, but when their eyes met, it was as if the rest of the room disappeared.

"Hey," Olivia said, her voice softer than usual.

"Hey," Alex replied, his tone steady but warm.

They stood there for a moment, the weight of the previous night hanging between them. Finally, Olivia spoke.

"So... about last night."

"Yeah?" Alex asked, his blue eyes locking onto hers.

"I'm not regretting it," Olivia said, her lips curving into a small smile. "But I'm not sure what happens next."

Alex nodded, stepping closer. "We figure it out. Together."

Olivia studied him for a moment before nodding. "Okay, champ. Let's see where this goes."

Alex smiled, and for the first time in a long time, he felt like everything was starting to fall into place.
