Chapter 46 - Lurking

(Really ... Why did you say that kind of thing? Do you still think I'm a child?)

Caroline was pleased by Jared's statement, but with a hint of resentment all the same. If she had been a weak, vulnerable girl like Kelly or Tawana, she would have been fine. But the fact was that Caroline was able to compete with Jared in terms of both ability and skill, and in a situation of equal strength, it was only natural that she would feel resentment, even though it was instinctive to rely on being guarded.

  "Well ..."

In response to Caroline's question, Jared shrugged his shoulders, neither confirming nor denying.

  (... you're hurt...)

Caroline raised her head, turning the beautiful two-colored pupils, quietly staring at Jared asked. In response, Jared could only let out a bitter smile.

  "You really can't be underestimated."

(How many years do you think we've been together?)

  "Fair enough."

Facing Caroline's rhetorical question, Jared laughed helplessly, then he reached out and brushed his hand over his left shoulder, a shallow wound appeared on his shoulder, the blood had already soaked through the clothes beside the wound. After deceiving his enemies, Jared had to deceive even his own people, which was one of the irredeemable parts of his strange personality. Caroline reached out with white, delicate fingers and gently stroked the wound.

"It's only natural to sacrifice a little to make it look like I've been stabbed. Anyway, it's not a big deal, so you can heal it, right?"

(Think I'm a walking medical kit?)

Caroline was a little disconcerted, but then laughed softly, but then she didn't reach out and touch the wound as she had done before in order to apply her powers. Instead, she moved closer to Jared's shoulder and stared at it. Then, she leaned in. Jared was startled to feel a warm, soft touch near the wound.

"Hey, Caroline, what are you ... doing?"

  (Sterilized.)

Caroline replied with a smug tone as she gently kissed the wound.

(What if there are germs in the wounds after all this time?)

"Even if it's poisoned, with your ability, Missy, you should be able to save it as long as it doesn't kill you right away."

  (This is retaliation.)

Caroline laughed softly as she stepped back, Jared's wounds had completely healed and there was no sign of any injury at all. Anyway, Caroline's ability can be activated by "touching" the opponent, and there is no restriction on what part of the body can be used. She used her hands because it was more convenient, and in fact, it didn't matter if it was any other part of her body. She brushed her long blonde hair, and then her face became more serious.

(But, in the meantime, you'd better not feel free to ...)

  "That's just right."

Jared nodded triumphantly, the plan had just popped into his head, and now it seemed to be working.

"You'll be in charge in the open, after all, it's easier with three girls together, while I'll be in the shadows, looking around, taking a look around. If they're really going after Kelly, they'll leave something around. A hunter can't hide his presence even if he's careful when he's chasing his prey. Don't worry, I'll be in charge of finding those guys and finding out what they're up to, and if anything happens, contact me through 'thought communication' immediately, understand?"

  (All right, be careful.)

Caroline didn't say anything more, she knew exactly what Jared was trying to do.

  What is light to man?

Light is light. Everyone will tell you that answer. Light is for illumination.

But for Jared, all the visible light he saw could be converted into data. It can be re-calculated, reorganized, and new conclusions can be drawn. His visions, his invisibility, everything is based on this. Reconstructing, changing, transforming the data of light - of color - into new formulas. But that's not enough. In fact, light can store data.

It wasn't just a delusion, after all, the current scientific hypothesis was that some haunted ancient castles were simply stones or carriers that had memorized images from many years ago, and by chance had replayed them like a video tape recorder. But in Jared's opinion, an image's data can be stored by the environment itself, only when he acts, the previous structure has been completely destroyed and collapsed. To use the simplest analogy, if a person stands there in a tectonic form that Jared sees as tectonic A, then the next moment he moves, that tectonic A is destroyed and transformed into a new tectonic B, and so on. But just as a thousand year old dynasty will leave behind a broken wall after its destruction, even if the structure has been destroyed, the parts that make it up are still there, only that human beings are unable to realize it.

Only Jared could do that, he could use the tectonic fragments left in that space to reverse the reasoning, just as a paleontologist would use a few bones to deduce the appearance and habits of a dinosaur to recreate the image of that time. If there was someone hiding somewhere watching Carrie, Jared would have to find that place to reveal himself to Jared, no matter how well he hid himself. After all, he couldn't have been exposed to the light without leaving a pattern. Manipulating light meant a lot, and the so-called invisibility and illusion were just the basics for Jared.

  Time is running out.

Jared looked at the setting sun and felt restless.

What he couldn't stand was the fact that he couldn't find Kula at all.

This world is not like Jared's world, where ubiquitous surveillance cameras and a variety of communication tools form a huge, tight information network. Although it is also this big net to make Jared and other people tired of running for their lives, but on the other hand want to find someone, this big net is also good. But in this day and age, there are no public surveillance cameras to hack into, no phones to listen in on, and no wireless networks that span the globe. Finding someone is not so easy, except for the most primitive look and smell ..., it seems that there is no other way.

But it's unrealistic to ask a random person, "Have you ever seen a little girl asleep in a corner or on the side of the road all day?" It's also unrealistic to ask "Have you ever seen a little girl sleeping in a corner or on the side of the road all day?" Jared hadn't forgotten the strange scene around Kura before, and although he didn't know what Kura had used, he knew that if she was able to make all the people walking on the road unnoticeable to her, then avoiding the general public's attention would be a breeze for the Great Chanting Envoy.

But Kula had to be found. Jared had never time-jumped before, though he'd read a lot of theory books and time-travel movies. But that was just fantasy, based on reasoning. But when it did happen to him, it was weird and dangerous.

Strange enough, they had thought that following a little girl wouldn't be much of a problem anymore. After all, they could choose to leave Tawana, but what would they do next? There's always money to be made, there's always life to be lived. Become mercenaries? Are you kidding? What about scrubbing dishes in a tavern? Staying with Tawana would be a more peaceful alternative.

  But how now ...

Jared let out a long, helpless shrug.

Luckily, there hadn't been any clashes with the ruling class here yet, and he didn't want to live a life where he was chased and fled. The current life was exciting for a normal person, but for a man who had spent hundreds of days and nights with thousands of Special Forces soldiers while facing tanks, helicopters, and even missiles, it was a tame and itchy experience.

Jared hid his figure and wandered around the edge, he carefully observed every window and every location, Kylie's magic laboratory was located in the northeast corner of the academy, perhaps because of her special identity, this two-story building with its own small courtyard was surrounded by mountains and water, and the scenery was quite good. According to Kylie, the so-called magic laboratory is a place to communicate with the spirit of magic more easily. Since she studied elven art magic, the magic lab was built in a similar place. That's why she knew Yulian, since they both studied at the Emerald Green Tower. But because of this, there are not many people around ... which is also the biggest problem.

Jared was walking, carefully feeling the tectonic fragments around him, the outlines of leaves blown by the wind, the traces of rats burrowing through the earth, every bit of fragments like countless rivers of stars and seas wrapped around Jared, he had to find out what belonged to human beings from them, and check it out, and if it didn't exist, then throw it away immediately, and then forget about it quickly. The brain has a finite capacity, and to touch the infinite with the finite is tantamount to suicide. So every time Jared walks through a place, he will analyze whether there is a structure he needs within 15 minutes, and then forget everything he has remembered before after three minutes.

  Then he stopped.

Someone, someone has been here before, and for a very long time.

The remnants of the construct told him so without a doubt. It was the mark of a human being.

But Jared didn't know if this was the answer he was looking for, after all, residual styles are affected by time, they become more broken and difficult to understand, if Jared had wasted half a day's work and only ended up with a fragmented image, he would have been depressed to death.

Jared was silent for a moment, feeling the shards of the residual style, then he stretched his hands out to the clearing in front of him with a stony look on his face.

In the air, where there was nothing at all, a blurred outline began to appear, and then, a person appeared.

Jared scrutinized the man in front of him, a man he had never seen before. It was a man in his fifties, a scar on his face, a deep, steady face that looked serious, and he stood there with his hands behind his back. But his eyes were filled with uncontrollable hatred and madness. Curious, Jared took the same position and looked down.

  He saw Kelly.
