Chapter 5 - Magic

In the next few days, Jared had been asking Florence for advice on the customs of the continent and some general knowledge that ordinary people should have. He did not hide his and Caroline's ignorance of the world, after all, even if he wanted to disguise, he would soon be exposed. He might as well just ask for advice, but if Florence was a smart person, he would know what Jared was trying to do, even though he had a lot of questions. And obviously Florence in this point is very cooperative, as a traveling businessman, he deeply know what to ask, what should not ask, what things should know, what things should not know. What's more, Jared and Caroline have used their own strength to prove to him that they are not just simple brats, with Florence's experience and vision can be seen, they must have killed people! And not just a few!

A person who dares to kill someone already shows that their hearts are different from those of ordinary people. Even though Jared is now behaving in a gentle and understanding manner, and Caroline looks like a noble lady with a good upbringing and character, deep down in their hearts, they don't have any scruples about killing, which Florence has already seen very clearly in the previous battle with the sand bandits.

With people like that, it's better not to take them for fools.

But Florence is worthy of being a well-informed traveling merchant, from him, Jared two not only know the brave deeds of those northern ice barbarians, but also heard of the absurd wasteful history of the rich and powerful in the south. The savagery and ferocity of the western nations, the pride and complacency of the inland empire, etc. etc.... According to different places, different habits to do business, which can be successful. But more let Jared they are surprised, in addition to human, Florence even and elves, dwarves, and even dragons have done a few not too small business!

However, there are actually dragons in this world ...

Jared and Caroline looked at each other and smiled bitterly, it looked like they'd really come to a hell of a place.

But there was one thing that puzzled Jared the most.

"Is this world ... magic a common existence?"

  "Magic?"

Florence put down the water bag and wiped the corner of his mouth. Just now he told Jared and Caroline about his journey with a wizard ten years ago, although it was just a very common, not to save the world or kill the demon king of the road companion, but it was enough to become Florence worthy of bragging about the object. After all, in this world, there are not many opportunities for ordinary people to get close to magicians. Even if those who have the cheek to rub up against them, they will easily be ignored. Moreover, wizards are proud of their nature, and basically they are solitary, and don't have many chances to travel with others. So it's not surprising that they're the subject of Florence's bragging rights.

"Magic is common, but wizards are not. Of course, if you want to see magic tricks, you can go to a tavern and watch the minstrels sing and dance and play a few tricks. But if it's powerful magic, you have to go see a real wizard, and that's really ... powerful, forget about it. Like my little princess, every day clamoring to be a wizard. As a father, I had to spend money. Becoming a wizard is not an easy task. ... By the way, isn't Miss Caroline's so-called 'power' a kind of magic? And the sword you summoned?"

  "This ..."

Jared thought for a moment, then replied with a smile.

"Perhaps it could be considered a form of 'magic' as well."

In fact, not to mention the unusual abilities they were born with, the sword could be considered a form of magic. It wasn't created by Jared's powers, but by a reclusive man they met by chance while they were on the run. Jared and the others were being chased by government forces, and it was that man who helped them escape. Jared and the others soon learn that the man himself is isolated from the world because he is working on something that the public considers absurd, and that he hates the human race so much that he helps Jared and the others in turn.

"We are hated and alienated from human society. The weak are trying to kill us because they fear our power. Don't run away from your power, conquer the weak and force them to kneel before you."

Those were the professor's exact words, and the fact that he was studying something that was unimaginable, even from an alien's point of view.

The professor's research is in the field of magic.

As a parting gift, Jared and each member of his team were given a personalized weapon made for them by the professor. The weapon was constructed from a special runic gold thread that was attached to the human body in the form of a tattoo. Hence the name "Rune Armor". In fact, Jared and Caroline didn't understand how "Rune Armor" was formed, and the professor didn't try to explain it to them. According to his words, there were specialties, he didn't understand how Jared and the others' abnormal abilities worked, and he didn't bother to ask Jared and the others to understand how magic was formed. It had to be said that during his dealings with the professor, Jared had come to fully realize that he was an extreme and eccentric character.

The magician in this world is not a weirdo like that professor, is he?...

"But, Mr. Florence, you're actually married."

Jared didn't ask any further questions, but rather changed the subject. After all, Florence was a traveling merchant with limited knowledge. That was the end of it.

  "Yeah."

Florence swung another whip, hitting the hunchback hard, his expression looking slightly pained.

"My little princess had a bad fate, her mother got sick and died when she was three years old ... I was still out of business at that time, if not for a neighbor who found her hugging my wife's body and crying ... "

Florence choked, then shook her head.

"l'm responsible, too. l've been a traveling merchant all these years. I had no money and couldn't afford to open my own store. Want to support the wife and children can only do so ... but is already in the past, now my family's little princess has entered her most desired magician academy, maybe ah, my family in the future will come out of a big magician it."

Perhaps sensing that the atmosphere was a bit awkward, Florence finally changed her tone and said to the two men with a smile.

(I hope your daughter's dreams come true just fine...)

"No problem, although my little princess looks very naughty, but she can still be serious when she needs to be serious. As long as she has that determination, becoming a magician will definitely not be a problem.... Ah, speaking of which, in two days, we will be able to get out of this desert. I wonder what your plans are?"

  "Two more days ...?"

Jared's expression turned grave, while Caroline, turning those beautiful two-colored pupils, calmly offered her advice.

(In that case, we'll have to be more vigilant. Maybe in the next couple of days, those sand pirates will attack us again.)

  "Not maybe ..."

The corners of Jared's mouth turned up, but it wasn't a smile.

"Those guys will definitely be back."

The three of them continued on their way, but this time Jared and Caroline had their weapons in their hands, and they sat on either side of the camel caravan, watching the sandy dunes carefully. It was a very sandy day, and in just a few moments they were all covered in dust. Even Caroline was not an exception, but fortunately the small parasol in her hand was of some use. Still, it wasn't easy for a girl to put up with it.

"Mr. Florence, if I may ask, what kind of cargo are you transporting?"

Jared's eyes swept over the vast expanse of dunes, then asked casually.

"Water Spirit Tears, a kind of gemstone unique to the southern waters, is the most suitable thing to be used to make wands for magicians.... This is a rare big business for me. If I can succeed this time, then earning five or six thousand gold coins won't be a problem." Said this line, Florence again a moment of spirit." You two, I'm afraid you don't know, don't look at those wizards all day long with a dead face as if everyone owes him tens of thousands of gold coins, if it wasn't for us merchants working our asses off, they'd just be picking up a piece of rotting wood and casting spells. But then again, why not? If it weren't for the peasants growing food, the wizards would all be starving to death. I don't understand why they're so ...."

  "Someone ..."

Jared's warning interrupted Florence's off-topic whining, and he immediately stopped the camel caravan, narrowing his eyes in a slit and glancing in Jared's direction. Although Caroline didn't say anything, the parasol in her hand closed with a snap, and then the structure changed into the slender sword. At the same time, she was paying attention to the opposite direction, in order to prevent someone from attacking from the rear.

  "... doesn't look like a sand pirate."

Florence rubbed her eyes again, then squinted. It wasn't a good day in the desert, it was so gray both above and below that it was hard to see a single figure. And that's exactly what Jared saw, a few blurry shadows. But these people seemed to be moving slowly, not as fast as the Sand Pirates they'd encountered before. But it could be a trick, after all, the Sand Pirates' tricks hadn't worked as well as they should have, and it was hard to tell if they were going to try anything new.

"I'll go check it out. You guys stay here."

Jared thought for only a moment before making up his mind. No one objected to his suggestion, Caroline had been his subordinate in the previous world, and Florence herself was not a merchant who could take the risk. What's more, if the trap is really a trap, Jared alone is more likely to escape from it, but more people would be a burden.

  (Be careful.)

  "Don't worry, I'll protect myself."

Facing Caroline's silent reminder in his head, Jared smiled faintly, then he hand-carried the green air and walked towards the blurred figures.

As the wind and sand hit Jared's face, he carefully prepared himself and flicked his right hand to activate his powers. In a flash, Jared disappeared into thin air as if he had been swallowed up by the wind and sand. But then he reappeared, as if Jared hadn't disappeared at all. But for those with good eyesight, they could see that the wind and sand "passed" through Jared's body and continued on as if he were not an obstacle in the path.

This is one of Jared's many abilities - "light manipulation", with this ability, Jared can reflect, absorb, control the light and angle of the light, or make them disappear completely, and what he has just done is just a reapplication of the optical camouflage technology. What he just did was just a reapplication of the optical camouflage technique. By refracting and projecting the original "self" created by the light, he created a virtual image that was almost identical to the real person. In a sense, this is a powerful form of invisibility. With this ability, Jared can trick everyone into seeing him - if he can see him at all.

An arrow pierced through the dusty sand and landed at Jared's feet. He stopped in his tracks and narrowed his eyes at his opponent.
