Chapter 29 - Crazy Escape

Run!

Chen Chao's hair stood on end, his muscles tensed, and without a second thought, he sprinted away. His heart was filled with dread. The virus had only erupted less than ten days ago, and this mutated crocodile had already grown to such an enormous size. It was simply unbelievable—completely defying biological logic. He couldn't even imagine how many mutated creatures it had consumed in these few days to evolve to this extent!

Boom!

The sturdy iron fence was pushed aside effortlessly by the giant crocodile's forelimb, as if it were a spider's web. It offered no resistance at all. With each step the giant beast took, the ground trembled, and deep impressions were left behind in the grass.

Speed Boost!

Chen Chao abandoned the idea of using the light to hide and conserved all his energy, activating his speed boost!

His speed doubled in an instant, reaching sixteen times the normal human speed. He became like a shadow, speeding through hundreds of meters in the blink of an eye. The surroundings blurred as he raced forward. If it weren't for his dynamic vision, Chen Chao wouldn't be able to control such high speed and would likely crash into a tree.

Whoosh!

He darted into the woods.

Run, run, run!

Chen Chao pushed his body to its limits, giving everything he had to increase his speed. To gain even a little more, he threw away the iron rod that had accompanied him in hunting many corpses and monsters.

Boom! Boom! Boom!

The giant mutant crocodile was fast, its massive body allowing it to cover ten meters in a single step. Even though Chen Chao had activated the speed boost, the gap between them didn't widen; instead, it was shrinking rapidly.

As they entered the woods, the distance between them remained at around one hundred meters.

Crash!

Trees were knocked down by the giant mutant crocodile, some broken in half, others toppled to the sides, clearing a wide path in the process.

Though he didn't dare look back, Chen Chao could feel that the giant mutant crocodile was only a moment behind him. If his speed faltered by even a fraction, it would immediately catch up and devour him.

The woods soon ended, and ahead was a flat grassland.

Chen Chao's face grew grim. On flat ground, the giant crocodile would catch up with him in no time, and the sewer was still far away.

Damn! Chen Chao clenched his teeth, the sharp pain helping him focus as his nerves began to calm.

Whoosh!

He suddenly pivoted, bursting out of the woods and veering sharply to the right, sprinting across the grass.

The giant mutant crocodile came crashing out of the woods, roaring as it gave chase. The sound of its roar was like a violent wind, snapping the smaller tree trunks in half.

Chen Chao's face turned pale as he pushed his body to its limits, accelerating with everything he had!

Faster! Faster! Faster!

Chen Chao shouted in his mind, but his body had already reached its limit, unable to go any faster.

A shadow fell over him from above.

The sunlight was blocked, and a sickly odor filled the air.

A cold shiver ran down Chen Chao's spine.

Suddenly, he spotted a herd of mutated zebras.

An intense will to survive surged in his eyes. He growled as he sped up, charging straight toward the herd of mutated zebras like a black bullet!

Whoosh!

As he reached the edge of the mutated zebra herd, they were immediately startled by the massive creature behind him. They panicked and scattered in all directions, shrieking in fear.

Although these mutated creatures had become bloodthirsty and violent, they still retained some intelligence and instincts. When faced with a massive creature like the giant mutant crocodile, their instinctual fear kicked in.

The giant mutant crocodile didn't pay any attention to the zebras, its cruel green eyes locked on Chen Chao. It seemed determined not to stop chasing until it had him.

Chen Chao soon realized what was happening. A chill ran through his body. He had thought that if he led the giant mutant crocodile into a herd of animals, it would stop and feed. After all, he was nothing more than a snack to it, while these mutated zebras—both in size and number—were more than enough to sate its hunger.

But this giant mutant crocodile's hatred for him seemed so intense that even its hunger couldn't override it.

Chen Chao quickly thought of that damn black gorilla. The crocodile must have seen him as an ally of the gorilla and hated him even more.

Frustrated, Chen Chao could only keep running.

The panicking herd of mutated zebras did cause some trouble for the giant mutant crocodile. Some of the zebras, in their panic, ran right into its claws, while others, too slow to escape, were crushed underfoot, blood spurting everywhere.

Chen Chao's figure moved like a swift fish, darting through the herd of mutated zebras.

The distance didn't increase; it just barely stayed the same.

There was no time for Chen Chao to relax. He kept running in a straight line. Not long later, he finally reached the edge of the herbivore zone. There was another iron fence separating two areas, and beyond it was a vast forest, teeming with many birds.

Mutated peacocks, golden eagles, black swans, and other protected species roamed the area.

Without hesitation, Chen Chao leapt over the iron fence and dove into the forest.

Several mutated peacocks that had been wandering near the fence immediately screeched and charged toward him, their open feathers resembling dozens of snarling eyes, glaring at him.

Chen Chao wasn't intimidated. With his boosted speed, he dashed past them without stopping for even a moment.

The peacocks tried to give chase, but just a few steps into the pursuit, they were startled by the tremors in the ground behind them. They turned to see a giant foot coming toward them.

Boom!

The giant mutant crocodile stomped through, crushing several of the mutated peacocks like ants!

Chen Chao raced through the bird area, darting wherever he saw large groups of animals, hoping to provoke the crocodile's appetite. However, even after crashing through two or three bird flocks, the giant mutant crocodile still showed no signs of stopping to feed. It relentlessly pursued him.

Chen Chao could only keep running in a straight line. Once he left the zoo and entered the human activity zone outside, he could use the zombies—who knew no fear—to delay the crocodile and buy himself time to escape.

After crossing the bird zone, the next area had a similar ecological environment—small woods, small ponds, and vast grasslands.

A few mutated tigers were lying in the grass, including one that was as large as an elephant, most likely having undergone a second mutation.

Chen Chao immediately ran toward them.

As soon as the mutated tigers saw him, they sprang to their feet, eyes filled with murderous intent as they rushed toward him.

But after only a few steps, the mutated tigers halted, their eyes turned skyward to spot the massive creature behind Chen Chao. They froze in terror, their bodies trembling, and began to scatter in all directions. Even the mutated tiger as large as an elephant, which had once been a formidable predator, was now shaking in fear.

Its size was nothing compared to the giant mutant crocodile's foot!
