Chapter 14 - Friendship

Roar~ Roar!

The corpses chased after the sound of the exhaust pipe, swarming towards the car from all directions. The car was like a magnet, drawing them in tightly!

Looking around, there were at least a hundred corpses surrounding the car. A sea of black, with raspy growls echoing from their decaying throats. The mere sound of their violent growls sent a chill down the spine. Surrounded by so many rotting faces, even a veteran who had seen death countless times would tremble in fear.

Bang! Bang!

Two corpses pounced headfirst towards the front of the car. Chen Chao didn't dodge but instead accelerated and charged forward, directly slamming the two corpses, sending them tumbling over the car roof and into the horde of zombies behind.

The windshield was shattered by one of the corpses' skulls, cracking like a spider's web, dividing his line of sight into fragmented pieces. Chen Chao squinted slightly, pressing down on the accelerator. He sped along the road at an excessive speed of 80 km/h, swerving left and right to avoid obstacles.

Chu Shanhe and the others moved cautiously along the greenery, keeping a close watch on Chen Chao's movements. When they saw the hundreds of ferocious corpses chasing the car from behind, they couldn't help but feel a chill.

Chu Shanhe's expression was complicated. He hadn't expected that someone he had just met would go to such lengths to save him. This selfless spirit, even he felt ashamed in comparison!

"If you make it out alive, this life is owed to you!" Chu Shanhe silently thought, staring at the black car.

Officer Xiao Song's expression was solemn as he silently cheered Chen Chao on. Just then, suddenly, two wrecked cars blocked the road ahead.

"Not good!" Officer Xiao Song's face changed dramatically.

Chu Shanhe also saw it. His expression immediately darkened. With the speed of the pursuing corpses, any delay in the car would result in it being overtaken. These two wrecked cars were a deadly obstruction!

The two doctors and the nurse also grew anxious. They hadn't even reached the halfway point of the street. If the corpses caught Chen Chao, they would be next.

As the group watched nervously, the black car didn't slow down but suddenly decelerated and jerked to the side!

"Is he panicking?" Chu Shanhe's mind sank.

But in the next moment, his eyes widened in disbelief as he watched the black car.

With that sudden swerve, the car suddenly tilted to one side, lifting two wheels off the ground, speeding forward on just one side of the tires.

Whoosh!

The black car, at the perfect angle, slipped through the gap between the two wrecked cars, gliding through the narrow space!

Officer Xiao Song, the two doctors, and the nurse all gaped, especially the nurse, who couldn't believe her eyes. This kind of miraculous driving skill was something only seen in TV special effects, wasn't it?

Chu Shanhe was a bit dazed. Wasn't it said that ancient martial artists disliked technology? They rarely even touched the smartphones that everyone had to have, to avoid radiation. How could someone with such extraordinary driving skills exist?

After bypassing the obstacle, the black car continued to race forward, leading the way.

Seeing that the corpses had been drawn far away, Chu Shanhe immediately signaled everyone to speed up. Five minutes later, they reached the end of the street, and there were no corpses in sight. All had been diverted by Chen Chao.

And yet, they couldn't see the shadow of the black car anymore.

They sat by the side of the road and waited.

Officer Xiao Song, with a regretful expression, said, "What a great person. If he joined the military, he would definitely have been a major. Not to mention in the current chaotic world—there are very few people so selfless, even in peacetime."

The deputy director of the hospital looked around. The empty street only echoed with the cold wind and the scattered remains of corpses. He shuddered and whispered, "Why don't we go to the rendezvous point?"

Chu Shanhe's gaze turned from the direction Chen Chao had gone and coldly fixed on the deputy director's face, like a sharp knife. "We agreed to wait here. You were just saved by him, and now you want to abandon him. Does that seem right to you?"

The deputy director hadn't expected the usually kind Chu Shanhe to say something so sharp. His face flushed slightly, but he didn't give up on persuading them. He tried to control his tone, speaking with regret, "He's being chased by so many corpses; his chances of survival are slim. If we wait here and more corpses come, won't it make his efforts in vain? If he were to know, he wouldn't rest in peace, would he?"

"Rest in peace, you son of a b****!" Officer Xiao Song couldn't take it anymore, glaring at him with disgust. "This is the first time I've realized how vile and shameless a person can be. And you call yourself a doctor, the deputy director? Where is your compassion? How can you abandon someone who just saved your life? Can you live with your conscience? Or do you have no conscience at all?"

Chu Shanhe waved his hand, signaling Xiao Song to stop. He then looked at the deputy director, his gaze cold. "Remember, I'm saving you because it's my duty as a soldier. The whole world is being ravaged by this virus, and the Technology Institute needs your expertise. If you don't contribute, I'll personally come to drag you three out!"

The deputy director's face darkened. "Captain Chu, you can't say that…"

Chu Shanhe raised his hand to interrupt him, coldly saying, "One more thing. From now on, Chen Chao is my brother. I won't allow anyone to harm him. If anyone tries, even if I'm not a soldier anymore, I'll still eliminate the one who harms my brother!"

The deputy director opened his mouth but, feeling the murderous intent in Chu Shanhe's eyes, couldn't get a single word out. The words got stuck in his throat and were swallowed back down.

He had no doubt that if he suggested leaving again, his head would be blown off by a bullet.

Ten minutes, twenty minutes.

Time slowly passed.

Before long, half an hour had gone by.

Chu Shanhe's expression darkened further. In fact, even he didn't think that Chen Chao would return alive. He chose to wait simply because he still harbored a faint hope, hoping for a miracle. But now that so much time had passed, it was clear that Chen Chao had...

Officer Xiao Song silently sat by the side of the road, staring down at his hands. Just earlier, he had handed a gun to that young man in his twenties. And now, that young man had taken the gun and led the horde of over a hundred corpses away...

He tightened his grip on his hand.

Chu Shanhe's gaze slowly returned from the distance, his expression wooden, his voice hoarse. "Let's go."

Officer Xiao Song stood up, about to turn, when suddenly, his eyes caught a small black dot. His body trembled, and his eyes widened as he stared in that direction.

It was him!

He was still alive!

Officer Xiao Song immediately became excited, his eyes slightly wet. He disregarded everything and ran toward him.
