Chapter 98 - Chapter 98: Shadows of the True Horizon

The oppressive weight of the cavern had lifted, but the air still felt thick with anticipation. Wu Qian and his companions moved cautiously, the echoes of the battle still ringing in their ears. They had destroyed the source of the formation, but they knew that the True Horizon would not let this transgression go unpunished.

"We can't linger," Yan Rui said, his voice low and tense. "They will send reinforcements."

"Agreed," Wei Xuan replied, her eyes scanning the now-quiet chamber. "But we need to regroup and heal. The battle has drained us all. We've won a small victory, but it's only a fraction of the war we face."

Wu Qian nodded, his gaze firm. He knew the risks. Even though they had struck a significant blow to the True Horizon, the sect was vast and powerful, its reach extending far beyond this single stronghold. This victory would not go unnoticed, and soon, they would be hunted by forces much stronger than what they had just faced.

As they began to make their way out of the cavern, Wu Qian's mind raced. He could feel the pressure building—not just from the threat of the True Horizon but from the growing realization that they were on the cusp of something far greater than they had initially understood. This wasn't just a war for survival. This was a battle for the future of the entire cultivation world.

Suddenly, the ground beneath them trembled.

"An earthquake?" Lian Yuxi said, her eyes narrowing.

But Wu Qian shook his head. "No. This is something else."

The tremors intensified, and before they could react, a dark figure emerged from the shadows. It was a tall, imposing figure draped in a cloak of midnight blue, the fabric swirling with an unnatural energy. His presence was suffocating, radiating an aura that made the air feel thick and oppressive.

The figure stepped forward, and the light around him seemed to dim, as if he were absorbing it. His eyes glowed with a cold, predatory gleam.

"You've done well to survive this long," the figure spoke, his voice deep and sonorous, carrying a weight of authority that sent chills down Wu Qian's spine. "But your little rebellion ends here."

"Who are you?" Wu Qian demanded, his hand instinctively reaching for his sword. "What do you want?"

The figure tilted his head, amusement flickering in his eyes. "I am Wei Tian, one of the Nine Grand Elders of the True Horizon. And I am here to deal with the pests that dare to challenge the sect."

A ripple of shock passed through the group. The Nine Grand Elders were the true pillars of the True Horizon, the most powerful figures in the sect, known for their mastery of profound techniques and their terrifying strength.

"An Elder?" Yan Rui muttered under his breath, his face grim. "We're in serious trouble now."

Wei Tian's lips curled into a cruel smile as he looked at the group. "You thought you could strike at the heart of the True Horizon and walk away unscathed? You've just made a grave mistake. The True Horizon is not so easily toppled."

Wu Qian stood his ground, his heart pounding in his chest, but his mind was clear. He knew that this was a pivotal moment. They had come this far, and there was no turning back. If they fell now, everything they had worked for, everything they had sacrificed, would be in vain.

"Don't underestimate us," Wu Qian said, his voice steady despite the growing pressure. "We will not stop. We will destroy the True Horizon, no matter how many of you stand in our way."

Wei Tian's eyes flashed with contempt. "Brave words, but it will not save you."

With a swift motion, Wei Tian raised his hand, and a wave of dark energy surged forward, engulfing the chamber. It was like a crushing wave of darkness, the air thick with malevolent power. Wu Qian barely had time to react as the pressure increased, his body straining under the weight of the attack.

"Brace yourselves!" Lian Yuxi shouted, her sword flashing as she conjured a barrier of spiritual energy to shield them.

The barrier flickered, crackling under the intensity of the assault, but it held. Just barely.

"Stay focused!" Wei Xuan urged, her voice cutting through the cacophony of swirling energy. "We can't let him break our formation!"

But it was clear that Wei Tian wasn't just using brute force. He was attacking their minds, twisting their perceptions with his power. The shadows around them seemed to come alive, morphing into monstrous shapes, each one more terrifying than the last.

"Is this all you have?" Wu Qian gritted his teeth, his sword glowing with a brilliant blue light as he pushed back against the wave of darkness. His aura surged, filling the cavern with the power of his resolve.

"I will not bow to you," he shouted, unleashing a fierce strike of sword energy that cleaved through the darkness. But the moment it struck, the energy was absorbed by the shadows, leaving nothing behind but a faint ripple.

Wei Tian let out a low, mocking laugh. "You still don't understand. This is my domain. I control everything within it."

The dark figure raised his hand again, and the ground itself seemed to crack open, releasing tendrils of shadow that surged toward Wu Qian and his companions. The air grew colder, the pressure unbearable.

Wu Qian could feel the energy of the True Horizon Elder closing in on them, but he refused to give in. With a shout, he focused his energy into his sword, unleashing the full force of his cultivation.

"Light of the Dawn!"

A brilliant beam of energy shot from his sword, cutting through the darkness like a blade of pure light. The wave of darkness recoiled, and for a brief moment, the cavern was illuminated in a dazzling display of power.

Wei Tian's expression darkened as he saw the attack. "So, you do have some fight left in you," he said, his tone colder now. "But it will not be enough."

With a snap of his fingers, the shadows twisted violently, reforming into a massive creature—a monstrous, serpentine figure of pure darkness that loomed over them.

"Face the true power of the True Horizon," Wei Tian declared, his voice full of malice.

Wu Qian's heart raced. They had faced many trials, but this was the most dangerous enemy they had ever encountered. Yet, he couldn't afford to hesitate. His comrades were counting on him, and the fate of their mission hung in the balance.

"Everyone, attack together!" Wu Qian commanded, his voice ringing with authority.

Lian Yuxi, Wei Xuan, and Yan Rui immediately rallied, their energy converging into a singular force. The battle had only just begun, and it was clear that they were about to face a true trial of strength and will.
