The first imp lunged at him, teeth bared. Instinct took over. Isaac raised his hand, and a surge of heat erupted from his palm. Flames burst forth, wild and untamed, incinerating the creature mid-air. It screeched, the sound cut short as its body dissolved into ash.
Isaac staggered, staring at his hand in disbelief. The heat lingered, the flames swirling like living things around his fingers.
"Okay," he muttered. "That was… something."
The imps hesitated, their glowing eyes fixed on him with a mix of fear and hunger. Then, as if emboldened by their numbers, they charged all at once.
Isaac gritted his teeth, focusing on the heat in his palm. This time, the flames obeyed, flowing with purpose as he swept his arm in a wide arc. A wall of fire erupted before him, consuming half the imps in an instant. Their screams echoed across the wasteland before fading into silence.
He allowed himself a small breath of relief. "Six down, six to go."
Then, pain.
A sharp, searing agony shot through his back. Isaac gasped, stumbling forward. His vision blurred as a crimson message flashed before his eyes:
