Chapter 10 - A Trap in the Shadows

The dim glow of the safehouse computer screens illuminated Abhay's determined face. For the first time since his journey began, he felt a flicker of hope. The list Neha had shown him wasn't just names; it was a roadmap to dismantling Rajan's empire. But with every step forward came a new risk, and Abhay knew this was only the beginning.

Neha worked quickly, pulling up blueprints, encryption programs, and surveillance feeds. "We have a narrow window," she said, her voice steady but strained. "Rajan's next major meeting is tomorrow night, at a secured facility outside the city. It's our chance to intercept his plans and gather proof of his intentions."

Ash leaned against the wall, arms crossed. "And what's stopping him from just killing us on sight? He knows we're coming."

Neha hesitated before responding. "That's why this has to be a covert operation. No direct confrontations. We're not going in to fight—we're going in to steal. Rajan doesn't know we have access to this safehouse or these systems. If we move fast, we can stay ahead of him."

Abhay stepped closer to the monitors. "What's the facility like?"

Neha tapped a key, and a detailed schematic appeared. The building was a sprawling compound with high fences, armed guards, and surveillance cameras covering every angle. "It's a private research center under Rajan's control. He's hosting key players in his operation there to finalize his next move. If we can infiltrate the facility and extract their communications, we'll have the leverage we need."

Abhay studied the blueprint, his mind already formulating a plan. "We'll need a distraction to draw their attention away from the main server room. Once the guards are focused elsewhere, I can access the system and download the data."

Neha nodded. "I can create a diversion, but it won't buy us much time. You'll need to be fast."

The Plan in Motion

The night air was cold as the trio approached the facility. They moved silently, keeping to the shadows as they scoped out the perimeter. The compound was even more imposing in person, with floodlights sweeping across the grounds and armed guards patrolling every entrance.

Ash adjusted the small earpiece Neha had given her. "This feels like suicide," she muttered. "But if it means taking Rajan down, I'm in."

Neha's voice crackled through the comms. "Stick to the plan. I'll start the distraction in five minutes. Abhay, get into position near the east gate. Ash, you'll cover him from the ridge."

Abhay crouched behind a stack of crates, his breathing steady despite the tension in his chest. He checked his equipment—a compact toolkit, a handheld device to bypass electronic locks, and a flash drive preloaded with encryption-breaking software. It wasn't much, but it would have to be enough.

Neha's distraction came without warning. A massive explosion rocked the western side of the compound, sending plumes of smoke into the sky. Alarms blared, and the guards scrambled toward the commotion.

"Go, go!" Neha urged through the earpiece.

Abhay moved quickly, darting across the now-unwatched east gate. The security lock on the door took longer than he liked, but his device did its job, and the door clicked open. He slipped inside, staying low and out of sight.

The interior of the facility was eerily quiet compared to the chaos outside. Abhay navigated the sterile white halls, guided by Neha's voice in his ear. "The server room is two floors down. Take the maintenance stairs to your left."

Abhay found the stairwell and descended quickly, his footsteps muffled by the thick concrete. The server room was heavily secured, but Neha's instructions were precise. Within moments, he was inside, surrounded by rows of humming machines.

The Extraction

Abhay plugged the flash drive into the main terminal and began downloading the files. The screen filled with lines of code, each one a piece of the puzzle that would expose Rajan's operation. The progress bar crawled forward, agonizingly slow.

"Come on," Abhay whispered, glancing at the door. He could hear distant footsteps, the guards likely doubling back now that the explosion had subsided.

"Abhay, you need to hurry," Neha's voice came through, tense. "They're closing in."

"I'm almost there," he replied, watching the progress bar inch closer to completion. 85%. 90%.

Suddenly, the sound of footsteps grew louder, accompanied by the telltale click of weapons being readied. Abhay's stomach dropped. The guards had found him.

"Neha, I'm compromised!" he hissed.

"Hold your ground!" Neha barked back. "The download's almost done. You can't leave without that data!"

Abhay gritted his teeth, his mind racing. The door burst open, and two guards entered, their rifles trained on him. "Hands up!" one of them barked.

Thinking quickly, Abhay activated a small EMP device from his toolkit. The lights flickered, and the server room was plunged into darkness. The guards hesitated for a moment, giving Abhay just enough time to grab the flash drive and dive behind a row of servers.

The guards opened fire, the bullets sparking off the metal casing. Abhay crawled low, using the darkness to his advantage. He pulled a smoke grenade from his bag and rolled it across the floor. Thick clouds filled the room, disorienting the guards.

Abhay seized the moment to slip out of the server room and into the stairwell. He sprinted up the stairs, his lungs burning as he pushed himself to keep moving. "I've got the data! I'm heading out!" he said into the comms.

The Betrayal

As Abhay emerged onto the ground floor, he spotted Neha waiting near the exit. Relief flooded his chest—until he noticed the figure standing beside her.

Rajan.

Abhay froze, his mind struggling to process what he was seeing. Neha's expression was blank, her eyes avoiding his.

"I told you," Rajan said, his voice dripping with mockery. "Every step you take, I'm already ten steps ahead."

Abhay's grip tightened on the flash drive. "Neha... What is this?"

Neha's lips trembled, but she didn't speak. Rajan stepped forward, his smile cruel. "She played her part perfectly. And now, you've delivered exactly what I wanted."

Abhay's heart sank as realization hit him. The entire operation—the safehouse, the files, the infiltration—it had all been a setup. Rajan hadn't just been watching; he'd orchestrated the entire thing.

"You won't get away with this," Abhay said, his voice shaking with rage.

Rajan chuckled. "Oh, Abhay. I already have."
