Chapter Seventeen - Secrets of the Bloodline
The next few days passed in a blur of preparation. Damien and Ava had spent hours researching everything they could about Aric's past, his rise to power, and any clues that might give them a better idea of what he was after. But despite their efforts, the answers remained elusive, hidden in the shadows. They had only scratched the surface of a much darker secret, one that neither of them was fully prepared to uncover.
Damien couldn't sit for more than a few minutes at a time, always restless. His injuries had healed somewhat, but the weight of the situation weighed heavy on him. The deeper they dug, the more it seemed Aric's motives were linked to something far more dangerous than just the werewolf pack. There was something old, something ancient, buried deep in the history of their kind, something tied to the bloodline itself.
Ava was the only one who seemed immune to the escalating tension. If anything, she became more determined with each passing day to learn something about the past. She couldn't help the strong pull toward Damien's world, not because of him, but because she needed to understand those forces that threatened to tear them asunder.
One evening, as they sat around a map of the surrounding territories, trying to piece together their next move, Damien spoke again about Aric's possible plan.
"I've been thinking," Damien began, his fingers running over the map, "What if Aric isn't just after the pack's leadership? What if he's after the Bloodstone?"
Ava looked up sharply. "The Bloodstone?"
Damien nodded, his expression grim. "The Bloodstone is a relic. An ancient artifact passed down through generations of alphas. It's said to hold the power to control the werewolf bloodline itself-every transformation, every shift, and potentially even the ability to create new alphas. But its power is. unstable. It's been hidden away for centuries.
Ava's heart missed a beat. The Bloodstone sounded like the sort of thing out of a myth-which was to say, much too powerful to actually exist in the real world. Given everything she had learned about the world of the werewolves, though, she couldn't discount the possibility entirely.
"But if it's been hidden for centuries, why is Aric after it now?" she asked. "What changed?"
Damien's eyes darkened as he met hers. "Because he's found it."
A chill ran up Ava's spine. "He's found the Bloodstone?"
Damien didn't answer right away. He stood, walking toward the window to stare out into the moonlit woods, as if he was looking for something. or waiting for something to come.
"The Bloodstone was lost for a reason," he continued, his voice heavy. "The power it holds is too dangerous. In the wrong hands, it could cause an imbalance. A new alpha could rise—one more powerful than any before. But the Bloodstone requires a certain bloodline to activate it. That's why Aric is after it. He's hoping it will make him unstoppable."
Ava's mind reeled. If Aric had the Bloodstone, it would mean nothing was off-limits. He could do anything, including taking down Damien and any other alpha who stood in his way. The very thought of it made her stomach turn.
"What do we do?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Damien's expression hardened. "We have to find it before he does."
Ava's stomach twisted with anxiety. The idea of going up against Aric-and the power of the Bloodstone-seemed insurmountable, even for someone like Damien. But she could see the resolve in his eyes. He was determined to stop Aric, no matter the cost.
"How do we even begin to find it?" Ava asked. "If it's been hidden for centuries, there's no way it's just lying around for anyone to stumble upon.
Damien turned to her, his eyes filled with a mixture of hope and despair. "The Bloodstone has a connection to the pack. The last known location of it was a place called the Hollow, a remote part of the forest that few dare to enter. The Hollow is rumored to be the resting place of past alphas. It's a sacred ground, and it's where the Bloodstone was hidden.
Ava's mind raced as she tried to process everything. The Hollow was a dangerous place, filled with traps and hidden secrets. But if the Bloodstone was there, then it was their only lead.
"We'll have to go there," Damien continued, his voice steady. "We'll need to be prepared for anything. Aric will stop at nothing to get to the Bloodstone, and if he's already close, we're running out of time."
Ava's heart hammered in her chest, but she nodded. She knew what they had to do. The stakes were higher now than ever before. This wasn't just about their survival. It was about protecting everything they held dear.
"We'll go tonight," she said, her voice steady with determination. "We can't wait any longer."
Damien met her gaze, his expression filled with both admiration and concern. He didn't want to put her in danger, but he knew she wouldn't back down. They were in this together, no matter the cost.
He took a deep breath and nodded. "Alright. We'll leave tonight."
As they made their final preparations, Ava couldn't shake the feeling that they were walking into something far darker than they realized. The Hollow was a place of ancient power, and if the Bloodstone was truly hidden there, it would be more dangerous than anything they had faced so far.
But one thing was clear: they were about to face a battle unlike anything they had ever experienced.
