The Emberwood was a place of legend, a sprawling forest where the trees burned with an eternal crimson glow. The air was thick with heat, and the ground was littered with ash. Despite the otherworldly beauty of the forest, Kael felt a sense of foreboding as they entered.
"Stay close," Marlen said, his tone uncharacteristically serious. "The Emberwood is alive, and it doesn't take kindly to intruders."
Kael and Varyn exchanged wary glances but followed Marlen deeper into the forest. The heat was stifling, and every step stirred the ash beneath their boots.
"Why is this place like this?" Kael asked.
Marlen gestured to the glowing trees. "The Emberwood was once home to a fragment of the Heart. Its energy seeped into the land, changing it forever. The fragment is gone now, but its influence remains."
Varyn frowned. "Gone? You mean destroyed?"
"No," Marlen said. "Moved. Hidden. But traces of its power linger, and that's what makes this place dangerous."
---
As they ventured deeper, the forest seemed to come alive around them. The trees shifted subtly, their branches forming unnatural shapes. Shadows danced in the corners of Kael's vision, vanishing when he tried to focus on them.
"Don't let the forest get in your head," Marlen warned. "It feeds on doubt and fear."
Kael gripped the Heart beneath his tunic, its steady rhythm a source of comfort. He could feel its power resonating faintly with the forest, as if the two were connected.
Suddenly, a low growl echoed through the trees.
"Something's coming," Varyn said, drawing his blade.
From the shadows emerged creatures unlike anything Kael had seen before. Their bodies were made of ash and flame, their eyes glowing like embers.
"Emberborn," Marlen said grimly. "Guardians of the forest. They'll kill anything they see as a threat."
The Emberborn lunged, and the forest erupted into chaos.
---
The battle was fierce, the Emberborn relentless in their assault. Kael's sword clashed against their fiery bodies, sparks flying with each strike. Varyn fought with his usual precision, his blade moving like a blur.
Marlen, for his part, wielded a pair of daggers that glowed with a strange light. He moved with agility, striking the Emberborn with pinpoint accuracy.
Despite their efforts, the creatures kept coming, their numbers seemingly endless.
"We can't fight them all!" Kael shouted.
Marlen nodded. "Then we don't. Follow me!"
He led them through the forest, dodging between trees and leaping over roots. The Emberborn pursued them, their growls growing louder.
Just as Kael thought they would be overwhelmed, Marlen stopped abruptly and placed his hand on a tree. The ground beneath them shifted, and a hidden passage opened.
"Inside, now!" Marlen shouted.
They dove into the passage, the entrance sealing behind them. The growls of the Emberborn faded, replaced by the silence of the hidden chamber.
Kael and Varyn caught their breath, their weapons still drawn.
"What is this place?" Kael asked.
Marlen smirked. "The start of our next journey."
