Khaos dodged by lying flat on the ground and the spider went above him, then he immediately stood up and ran. Khaos did not know where he was going, he just knew that he had to get as far away as possible from the portal before hell broke loose.
The flight to save Zara's life and his fight with Milly had completely exhausted his Flux, and he had nothing left. At that moment, Khaos was no better than an ordinary man in his prime. Flux also naturally hardened a cultivators body just a little bit, and khaos did not have even that miniscule protection at that moment.
Khaos ran as fast as his body could go for over half an hour, and as time went on, he could feel the slight vibrations in the ground, vibrations typical of an army of beasts flowing out of a portal. Khaos tried to increase his speed, however, without Flux, he was just as fast as a non-cultivator professional athlete.
Ironic, not so long ago i could move so fast that i even injured my body', he thought.
Khaos suddenly screamed as he felt a searing pain on his left thigh, which caused him to fall onto the ground. He quickly noticed the red acid eating at his skin, the robes did not even slow it down.
He screamed in pain as he rolled on the ground, wiping the acid on the grass, he couldn't risk touching it with his hands.
With the absence of Flux, he could feel pain like a normal person, and it was Khaos' first time feeling that kind of pain. However, no matter how much his thigh burned, he knew he could not stop moving.
Khaos forced himself to stand up and continued limping away as fast as he could. 'Huh, never thought i would be in this situation again' he thought back to the portal that had killed his parents.
Alas, before he even took three steps, he felt six needles digging into his back, before a sudden weight forced him to fall. As he fell, he noticed a sharp rock in arm's range, and he quickly stretched out his hand and grabbed it. As soon as he touched the ground he stabbed the spider on his back with the rock.
The only soft part on the Common Class, Red Toxic spider, was the head and luckily Khaos hit the mark. He then screamed in pain as he pushed the spider off him.
It's legs had gone five centimeters into his skin, thankfully they were not poisonous, but it hurt like someone stabbed him with six, two centimeter thick, needles at the same time.
Tears flowed from his eyes as his body seized from the pain, but he still stood up. 'I can't die here!' he thought, slowly limping away. By now the horde of beast was about two hundred meters behind him, and the vibrations on the ground were more powerful.
Then suddenly, he heard a loud thud behind him, then another, and another, until it sounded like someone lacking in the rhythm department was playing a drum.
Curiosity trumped his need for survival and Khaos glanced behind him, and he saw a wall of figures clad in silver armour, facing the oncoming tide. The thuds came from the figures as they fell from the sky and soon enough, there were over two hundred soldiers between the army of beasts and Khaos.
The emblems on the back of their silver armours shined proudly; it depicted a golden spear piercing through a portal. 'The Spear', Khaos thought.
There were three organizations on Zylon; the Academies, The Shield, and finally, The Spear. Talented cultivators went to the Academies when they met the enrollment requirements.
Average cultivators went to The Shield when they reach the recruitment requirements. Then there were those that were not talented enough to make it into the Academies, but too talented to waste away in The Shield. Those cultivators went to The Spear.
Just like The Shield, The Spear was an organisation founded by one of the 10 Lawgivers but unlike The Shield, which protected people from other people. The Spear protected people from beasts.
It was the job of the Academies to protect cities from beasts, however, sometimes a city might be far away from it's assigned Academy. Even though Defenders were extremely fast, if a portal opened a few kilometers away or even directly inside a city, the beasts would need only a few seconds to wipe out the entire city.
This was were The Spear came in. It's job was to buy enough time for the Defenders from the Academy to arrive. The Spear had the highest mortality rate of it's soldiers and due to this, it's recruitment requirements were far laxer than the other two, in fact there was only one requirement, but it was the hardest.
All Cultivators of The Spear were required to be willing to die for humanity, and the entrance tests were, to put it lightly; brutal. However The Spear paid it's cultivators very well and even supported their growth until the eighth stage. It also greatly compensated it's soldier's families in the case of death during battle.
"Academic, are you okay!?" One of the soldiers shouted, he hovered a few meters in the air and even though he was talking to Khaos, he faced the oncoming tide, forcing Khaos to only see his back.
"I will survive". Khaos answered.
"My force is not enough", The soldier mumbled, Khaos had already deduced that this man was the leader of The Spear branch in Galor city, meaning that the beasts were heading towards Galor, otherwise The Spear would not get involved.
The next city was over 500 kilometers away, and Khaos was positive that he had not travelled that far from from Galor, meaning that The Spear soldiers in front of him came from Galor city.
"Can you recover and fight?" The Spear leader asked
"Yes".
"How long do you need?"
"As long as possible". Khaos replied and the leader nodded resolutely. He then unsheathed the long sword on his back, and pointed it at the incoming tide, which was a hundred meters away from his army. It must be noted that Khaos and the leader had talked for no more than four seconds.
"Soldiers!" he shouted. "Today, we fight against a insurmountable enemy, a foe that will probably claim our lives. But i ask you, what is our purpose?. Is it to win?, Is it to conquer?. Our duty is to protect those behind us from the forces not of this world".
"Today, right now, we fight not for victory, but for time. We fight for time so that our loved ones will survive. For even in death, we will find victory, for even in defeat, we will find honor, and for every second we buy, our legacy will live on."
"The families in Galor put their faith in us". The leader then turned around to face Khaos. His brown eyes set ablaze with determination. "And we put our faith in the Black Academy, to ensure that our sacrifice will not be in vain".
"For our families, for our friends, for their futures - let us march into the jaws of death, with courage in our hearts and hope in our souls".
