"Talk" Khaos ordered the two men in front of him. He had conjured pillars of earth and bound their hands and legs. Khaos had also removed their hoods, but as he expected, he did not recognise them.
The captives just stared with hatred at Khaos, even after an hour of torture, they did not say a word, and Khaos was running out of ideas.
"Who are you working for!?" he repeated for the dozenth time. However unlike the times before, he got a reaction this time; the captive he was speaking to spat at him.
Khaos waved his hand and a wind blade decapitated the man as he wiped the spit and blood mixture off his face.
"We won't get anything from him", he said to Zara, who just nodded.
"We are wasting time, let's just question more friends and family of the victims". Zara said as she put an arrow in her bow.
"For the future is in the hands of those who know his face, and hear his voice", the remaining captive suddenly said.
"What?" Zara and Khaos both asked but the man's neck just went limp, and tears of blood flowed from his eyes. He was dead.
"He killed himself". Khaos shrugged. The Flux core of cultivators was located in the middle of the brain, the quickest and most painless method of suicide was exploding one's own core.
"What did his words mean?" Zara asked.
"I do not know". Khaos narrowed his eyes, "The only thing we got is that their leader is a man", he scratched his chin.
"Or maybe they were just the ramblings of a dying man". Zara said.
"Probably". Khaos nodded. "But we can be sure that whatever is happening in this city is not a small thing".
"You are right, otherwise they would not dare attack Academics. They saw it better to risk their lives for a chance at stopping the investigation", Zara replied,
"Let's return to city hall and check if they have finished that map yet, hopefully someone will give us further clues as to what is happening here". Zara said, and Khaos nodded as they took off into the sky.
The future is in the hands of those who know his face and hear his voice'. Khaos repeated those words in his mind as they flew towards city hall. Surprisingly, Milly was standing at the door, apparently waiting for them.
"I apologise for the behaviour of my father and Remi", she said. "Remi is here now if you would like to continue asking her questions".
Khaos shook his head. "That is not necessary. I doubt there is anything she knows that can help us".
"Have you obtained the map of the city marking the residences of the victims?" Zara asked.
"Yes we have, please come in. I will have our chefs serve you a meal while i retrieve the map". Milly said, opening the way for them to enter the mansion.
Walking into the room they had met the Mayor earlier in the day, Khaos was surprised to see a full course meal on the table.
"Help yourselves, i will be back in a few minutes". Milly said before walking up the stairs to the second floor.
It was then that Khaos' stomach grumbled, causing Zara to raise an eyebrow, "What?, i haven't eaten anything in 3 months". Khaos said, already sitting down and biting into a large, blue, watermelon-like fruit.
"How did she know we were on our way?" Zara wondered, looking at the steaming carrot stew in front of her. "This food was prepared only recently", she said.
"Who cares, just shut up and eat woman". Khaos said, thoroughly enjoying himself.
Zara rolled her eyes as she took a spoonful of the stew, and she nodded in appreciation. Unlike Khaos, she had not eaten in more than ten years. After Khaos had told her about his father, she understood why he fancied food that much, he had been eating everyday for his entire life after all.
Five minutes later, Milly entered the room. Khaos began to eat in a more civilized manner after that.
"Here is the map, the areas marked green are the former residences of the victims". Milly said, raising her hand for a team of maids to take away all the empty plates.
Khaos wiped some black juice from the sides of his mouth. "Thank you", he received the map.
"For the food or the map?" Milly asked with a chuckle.
Khaos looked at her; "Both" he said, before noticing something on her face. "Were your eyes always like this?" he asked.
Milly blushed; "What do you mean?".
"Some parts of your pupil are green instead of the usual blue". Khaos said, reaching out to touch her cheek. However, Milly slapped his hand away.
"Forgive me, i have some matters to attend to". she said, looking away from Khaos. "I hope the map will help in your investigation", she then literally ran out the room.
"Lyra will not be pleased" Zara said.
"What?"
"Openly flirting with someone else like that. When i meet Lyra, i will not hesitate to tell her". Zara casually peeled open and black banana and took a bite, her gaze never leaving Khaos.
"Yeah, yeah let's get out of here and look for a place to stay the night". Khaos waved Zara off, who followed him out of the mayor's mansion. The sun was only about to set but the core district was already dead silent.
"Lets go to the inner district. There is an inn there we can stay at". Khaos said.
"Oh okay, maybe Lyra will be there. I have a story to share with her after all". Zara smirked.
"This is going to be a long quest" Khaos grumbled.
