Chereads / Ruin: The fall of civilization / Chapter 2 - JOURNEY AT HAND

Chapter 2 - JOURNEY AT HAND

Dwayne woke up to the sound of birds chirping outside his window. He stretched his arms and yawned, feeling the softness of his bed. He had been given a small but cozy room in one of the settlement's residential buildings.

He got out of bed and began to get dressed. He put on a pair of worn jeans and a faded t-shirt, both of which had been provided by the settlement. He slipped on his shoes and headed to the bathroom to wash his face.

The bathroom was small but clean, with a sink, toilet, and shower. Dwayne washed his face with cold water, feeling invigorated. He then brushed his teeth and combed his hair.

After finishing his morning routine, Dwayne headed to the settlement's communal dining hall for breakfast. The hall was filled with the smell of freshly cooked food, and Dwayne's stomach growled in anticipation.

He joined the queue and waited for his turn. When it was his turn, he was given a plate of scrambled eggs, toast, and bacon. He took a seat at an empty table and began to eat.

The food was delicious, and Dwayne savored every bite. He washed it down with a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice.

After breakfast, Dwayne headed to the garden to start his day's work. The sun was shining, and the air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers.

He began to work on the vegetable patch, carefully watering the plants and removing any weeds. The work was tedious but rewarding, and Dwayne felt a sense of satisfaction as he watched the plants grow.

As he worked, Dwayne chatted with the other gardeners, exchanging stories and jokes. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, and Dwayne felt like he was part of a community.

The morning passed slowly but enjoyably, and before Dwayne knew it, it was time for lunch. He headed back to the communal dining hall, looking forward to another delicious meal.

The rest of the day passed in a similar manner, with Dwayne working in the garden, chatting with the other settlers, and enjoying his meals. It was a typical day in the settlement, and Dwayne felt grateful to be a part of it.

The sun had just begun to set, casting a warm orange glow over the settlement. Dwayne, Raven, Gideon, and the others had gathered in the communal dining hall, enjoying a well-deserved dinner after a long day's work.

Just as they were about to finish their meal, Jenkins, one of the settlement's leaders, walked into the hall, a serious expression on his face. Maria, the other leader, followed close behind, a hint of a smile on her lips.

"Dwayne, can I have a word with you and your team?" Jenkins asked, his voice firm but polite.

Dwayne nodded, wiping his mouth with a napkin. "Of course, Jenkins. What's up?"

Jenkins cleared his throat, his eyes scanning the group. "We've received intel about a possible location of a high-capacity generator. It's said to be able to power the entire settlement for at least a year."

Raven's eyes lit up with interest. "That sounds like a game-changer. What's the catch?"

Maria smiled, her eyes crinkling at the corners. "The catch is that the generator is located in a nearby abandoned factory. We've had reports of some... unsavory characters hanging around the area."

Gideon frowned, his brow furrowed in concern. "What kind of characters?"

Jenkins' expression turned grim. "We're not entirely sure. But we do know that they're not friendly. That's why we need a team with your... particular set of skills to retrieve the generator for us."

Dwayne leaned back in his chair, a thoughtful expression on his face. "I see. And what's in it for us?"

Maria's smile grew wider. "Well, Dwayne, we're willing to offer you and your team a significant amount of resources and supplies in exchange for your services. We're talking food, water, medical supplies... the works."

Raven raised an eyebrow. "And what about shelter? We're still living in those temporary quarters."

Jenkins nodded. "Ah, yes. We can offer you and your team permanent housing within the settlement. You'll have your own private quarters, complete with all the amenities you need."

Gideon whistled softly. "That's a pretty sweet deal. But what's the timeline looking like? When do we need to get the generator?"

Maria glanced at Jenkins, who nodded. "We'd like you to leave as soon as possible. The sooner we get the generator, the sooner we can start powering the settlement."

Dwayne nodded thoughtfully, his eyes scanning the group. "Alright, I think we can make it work. But we'll need to discuss the details and come up with a plan."

Jenkins smiled, a look of relief on his face. "I knew I could count on you, Dwayne. Let's get to work."

As the group began to discuss the mission, Maria stood up, a warm smile on her face. "I'll leave you all to it. I'm sure you'll come up with a plan that will get the job done."

With that, she turned and walked out of the hall, leaving the group to their discussion.

As they talked, Dwayne's eyes met Raven's, and he could see the excitement and anticipation in her gaze. He smiled, feeling a sense of pride and purpose. This was going to be a mission to remember.

As the group discussed the mission, Gideon's face darkened, his brow furrowing in concern. "I don't think this is a good idea, Dwayne," he said, his voice laced with a hint of desperation. "We're talking about going into an abandoned factory, potentially facing off against hostile groups. It's too risky."

Dwayne's expression remained calm, but a hint of frustration flickered in his eyes. "I understand your concerns, Gideon, but we need that generator. It's the best chance we have to get the settlement up and running."

Gideon's face reddened, his voice rising. "You're not listening to me, Dwayne! This is a suicide mission! We're not even sure if the generator is still there, or if it's even worth the risk."

Raven's eyes flashed with anger, her face set in a determined expression. "I think we should do it, Gideon," she said, her voice firm. "We can't just sit around and wait for something to happen. We need to take action."

Gideon's expression turned stern, his eyes narrowing. "Raven, I'm ordering you to stay back. This is too dangerous for you."

Raven's face fell, her eyes widening in surprise. Then, her expression darkened, her jaw setting in a stubborn line. "You can't order me to do anything, Gideon," she said, her voice low and even. "I'm a part of this team, and I have a say in what we do."

Dwayne held up a hand, interrupting the argument. "Okay, let's not fight about this. Gideon, I understand your concerns, but I think we can make this work. Raven, I agree with Gideon that it's not safe for you to come with us. You're our medic, and we need you to stay behind and keep everyone safe here."

Raven's face twisted in a scowl, her eyes flashing with anger. But then, she seemed to deflate, her shoulders sagging in defeat. "Fine," she muttered. "But you'd better be careful, Dwayne. I don't want to have to patch you up again."

Gideon's expression remained skeptical, but he nodded reluctantly. "I still don't think this is a good idea, Dwayne. But I trust your judgment. Just be careful, okay?"

Dwayne nodded, a small smile playing on his lips. "I will, Gideon. Don't worry."

As the argument came to a close, the tension in the room seemed to dissipate, replaced by a sense of determination. Dwayne's team was going on a mission, and they were going to make it happen.

As Dwayne and his team finalized their plans, a group of four outsiders approached them. They were a rough-looking bunch, with scars and tattoos adorning their faces and arms.

One of the men, a burly guy with a thick beard, spoke up. "Hey, Dwayne. We couldn't help but overhear your plans. We're willing to volunteer to follow you on this mission."

Dwayne's eyes narrowed, sizing up the group. "What makes you think you're qualified for this mission?" he asked, his voice firm but polite.

The bearded man smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "We've got skills, Dwayne. We've been surviving on our own for months now. We know how to handle ourselves in tough situations."

The five of them - Dwayne, Ryder (the bearded man), Victor, Marcus, and Emily (the girl) - walked into the settlement's community center, where Jenkins and Maria were waiting for them.

"We're ready to head out," Dwayne said, his eyes locked on the settlement leaders. "But we're going to need some transportation and ammunition."

Jenkins nodded, a thoughtful expression on his face. "We can provide you with a vehicle, but it's not going to be a luxury ride. It's a small Toyota Corolla, just big enough for the five of you and the generator."

Maria spoke up, her voice firm. "And as for ammunition, we can provide you with some basic supplies. But we can't give you too much, we need to conserve our resources."

Ryder nodded, his eyes scanning the room. "That's fine, we'll make do. What's the vehicle look like?"

Jenkins smiled, a hint of pride in his voice. "It's a little Toyota Corolla, been modified for off-road use. It's not the prettiest thing, but it's reliable and it'll get you where you need to go."

Dwayne nodded, his eyes locked on the settlement leaders. "Alright, let's get moving. We've got a generator to retrieve."

The five of them walked out of the community center, following Jenkins and Maria to the settlement's garage. The Toyota Corolla was parked in the center of the garage, looking small and unassuming.

Victor whistled, his eyes scanning the vehicle. "That's a tiny car. Are you sure it'll fit all of us and the generator?"

Jenkins nodded, a confident smile on his face. "It'll fit, just barely. But it's the best we've got, so you'll just have to make do."

Emily spoke up, her voice soft. "I'll ride in the backseat, I'm the smallest."

Dwayne smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Alright, Emily. You can ride in the backseat. Let's get moving."

Dwayne's gaze flicked to the other three members of the group. There were two more men, both of whom looked like they had seen their fair share of battles. And then there was the girl.

She was petite, with long, curly brown hair and bright green eyes. She had a smattering of freckles across her cheeks, and a small tattoo of a sun on her left ankle. Dwayne's eyes lingered on her, and he felt a sudden jolt of attraction. She was cute, in a quirky, offbeat kind of way.

The girl caught Dwayne's eye, and a faint blush rose to her cheeks. She looked away, her eyes scanning the floor.

Dwayne's gaze snapped back to the bearded man. "Alright, you're in," he said, his voice firm. "But let me make one thing clear: we're a team. We work together, we watch each other's backs. If you're not willing to do that, then you're not welcome on this mission."

The bearded man nodded, a serious expression on his face. "We're in, Dwayne. We'll do whatever it takes to help you succeed."

Dwayne's eyes flicked to the girl, who was still looking at the floor. He felt a sudden pang of curiosity. What was her story? What had brought her to this place?

He pushed the thoughts aside, focusing on the task at hand. "Alright, let's get moving. We've got a generator to retrieve."
