Chapter 8 - One slight compromise

The minute she was out of sight, I made my way to Jared's office. As I did the way the guards showed respect replayed through my head once more.

Baring the neck in our world meant respect; it was done from mostly the lower rank to the higher rank. I don't know why that happened but I wasn't about to find out why.

Right now, I wanted to find out who murdered my sister. There were clues, I knew there were. And the key to them was right inside this building.

A couple of people were inside the elevator. A man got off first then I was next. As I stepped out I noticed the secretary was not on her desk. This made me sigh in relief as I walked to Jared's door. About to knock, I stopped on spot hesisting to see the man who ruined my life years ago. What was I supposed to say to him?

I wouldn't be here if not for mum.

"Come in, Nova. I know you're there." Jared suddenly said making me jump on spot.

I couldn't decipher how he knew I was here.

Could it be his wolf? Maybe he could still scent me. I wondered how it was possible. He had rejected me and I accepted it. Somethings didn't add up.

I tore the door open, walking in that instant. I noticed he was sitted on his table. The entirety of this looked mysterious. He sat on his chair the last time, why was he on the table right now? Did he perhaps know I'll show up?

"Would you like some coffee?" he said directing his hands to the two cups of coffee that was on his table.

I scoffed instantly. A coffee? I couldn't believe this.

It's been five years since he kicked me out as his mate and Luna. Now, he expects me to suddenly have coffee with him? Did he think this was going to buy his way through?

I wondered what kind of games he was playing. I think I had to make something clear right now.

"I don't know what you think this is, but I assure you it's far from it." I said folding my arms. I strolled to the sofa which was far from his table sitting down with folded arms hoping he kept his distance from me. He had a current mate to offer coffee. He should keep his goodwill to himself, nobody cared.

"Why did you come here if you didn't miss me, Nova?" he muttered making me sigh.

"I came here because I heard something. I only intend to confirm it. Simple."

"Hmm, I see," he said with half a smirk. Jared came down from the table walking to me. "What do you want to confirm?"

"If you had something to do with the death of my sister."

"I didn't." he said stepping closer. I swallowed wondering what he was about to do only for him to sit right beside me. This was what I feared. I didn't want him coming close at all nor feel the heat that I felt right now. I also wanted no déjà vu, none of that.

The slightest feeling could be dangerous to the both of us. "Then who did?" I asked him.

"I do not know how you want me to explain myself again, Nova. If you have gotten your powers as a guardian wolf, you'd realize I'm telling the truth." he said making me scoff.

"How do you mean? That I communicate with the moon goddess to tell me who murdered my sister and she replies that it isn't you?"

"Who knows? It might turn out to be right." he shrugged.

There was something about him right now that annoyed me. I didn't know what it was. Was it his dark hair? Or his teeth? Was it his expression, or perhaps his expensive suit? I just didn't know why he pissed me currently.

"I already said I'm not interested in making small talks with you. I just want to know if it's indeed true."

"I wasn't creating a small talk with you, Nova. I was just suggesting a more trustworthy way to know I wasn't responsible for the death of your sister, since all you do is blame me so far." he said.

"Oh my goodness." I simply said, putting my hands in my pockets bringing out the magazine mum showed me yesterday. I flipped the pages of it, going exactly to the pictures of him and the so-called detective that worked to find out the culprit only to mark the case unsolvable.

"Then tell me, when was this?" I asked showing him, "And why didn't you say anything about it when I accused you of murdering my late sister?"

"How was it going to sound if you heard it from me, you didn't believe my side when I showed you the log book? So what it the possibility, you were going to believe me if I told you any of that?"

I closed the magazine firmly saying. "Don't try to act all innocent because I get where this is coming from. I know the kind of man you are, Jared Blaze. If it means putting people down to fulfil your desires, you'll do it over and over again."

"What do you want from me?"

"I want you to make me your assistant. Just like my late sister, if I'm able to be in the same position as her, right by your side, I'd be able to find the culprit." I told him making him smirk.

Those lips, why did they look perfect right now? Why did he seem handsome, in spite of the fact that we were arguing?

"Are you a detective now?"

I looked at him with a daring expression catching his gaze which communicated with mine in a seductive manner. From the way they dilated it was evident that they did those right now.

"I'm simply making use of my genes, I'm a guardian wolf, if you forgot."
